Splitting a large video into files does not make those parts uploadable as one YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube Live’s standard encoder workflow sends a continuous live feed using a server URL and stream key. To broadcast a prerecorded video, play or process it through a compatible encoder; use a file splitter only if you need separate files for storage, transfer, or later processing.
First decide what you need the split to accomplish
| Goal | Use this workflow | What the result does |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast a prerecorded video as a live event | Send the video through a compatible encoder to YouTube Live using its server URL and stream key. | A live feed, not a set of uploaded file parts. |
| Upload a video to YouTube as a regular video | Use YouTube’s ordinary video-upload workflow. | A video upload, not a livestream. Splitting the source does not turn it into a live broadcast. |
| Divide a file for storage, transfer, or later processing | Use a media segmenter such as FFmpeg’s segment muxer. | Separate media files on your system. YouTube Live does not automatically combine them into one broadcast. |
| Send a segmented live feed using HLS | Configure an HLS-compatible encoder and follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements. | A protocol-based live feed; arbitrary file chunks are not a substitute. |
YouTube’s encoder setup calls for a live-stream server URL and stream key, while its HLS documentation specifies a streaming protocol and segment/playlist rules. Those are different from dividing a finished file into generic upload-sized pieces. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s live encoder settings and ingestion guidance.

To broadcast the recording as a YouTube Live stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires an eligible, verified channel. Check the channel’s Live access in YouTube Studio before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup help explains the eligibility and setup steps.
- Create or schedule the live event in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room and select an encoder-based stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Load the recording into an encoder. Use software or hardware that can play the file and transmit it as a live feed. Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Do not feed a set of ordinary split MP4 files to the live control room expecting them to be stitched together.
- Set output to match the source and network. Choose a supported resolution, frame rate, video and audio encoding, and bitrate that your encoder and sustained upload connection can maintain. For long broadcasts, test the complete playback path rather than relying on a brief connection check.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder, confirm the preview appears in YouTube Studio, and check that video, sound, and timing are correct. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup before streaming.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health, audio/video, and the encoder’s connection status. If YouTube or the network drops the feed, use the encoder’s reconnect behavior and verify the live preview returns before assuming the event is healthy.
Bandwidth for a sustained feed
Live bandwidth is about a stable, sustained upload rate, not just whether the source file can be uploaded eventually. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the selected stream bitrate and advises testing before the stream. For example, if your encoder sends at a given bitrate, your measured, sustained outbound capacity should be at least that bitrate plus the recommended margin; other household or office traffic can reduce what is available. The 20% figure is YouTube Help guidance, with no publication date stated on the page. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

To split the file locally with FFmpeg
Use FFmpeg’s segment muxer when the goal is to create separate media files. The command below makes approximately 10-minute Matroska segments while copying the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding:
#1 Best Overall
- Performance: Advanced read speeds of up to 130MB/s for everyday data storage & transfers²
- Speed: Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 flash drives²
- Durability: Sturdy, light-weight design with convenient and modern sliding collar cap design protects content when not in use
- Reliability: Essential mobile storage solution ideal for transferring large files such as movies, videos, photos, music & documents
- Compatibility: Compatible with most Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 PC and Mac laptop and desktop computers, backwards compatible with USB 2.0
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f segment -segment_time 600 -reset_timestamps 1 part_%03d.mkv
- Replace
input.mp4with the source filename. FFmpeg can read many formats, but the output container must support the streams being copied. -map 0asks FFmpeg to include the input’s streams. If the file has unusual subtitle, data, or attachment streams, inspect it first and adjust the mapping for your intended output.-c copyavoids re-encoding, so it is fast and preserves the encoded streams. Segment boundaries may fall only at suitable existing keyframes, so a requested duration is not a guarantee of an exact cut.-segment_time 600requests a segment about 600 seconds long. Change the value to suit your storage or transfer limit; actual durations can vary with keyframe placement.-reset_timestamps 1resets timestamps at each segment, which can help with independent playback in supported players.part_%03d.mkvnames the output files sequentially. Keep the generated files together and note their order.
Try the command on a short sample first and inspect every output file in the player or processing tool you intend to use. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes the segment muxer and its options. If a target workflow requires exact cut times, stream-copy segmentation may not be enough: re-encoding with controlled keyframe placement can be necessary, and it takes longer and may change the encoded output.

Joining split files later
When the parts have compatible stream characteristics, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join them without re-encoding. Create a text file named parts.txt listing the files in order, for example:

- 256GB ultra fast USB 3.1 flash drive with high-speed transmission; read speeds up to 130MB/s
- Store videos, photos, and songs; 256 GB capacity = 64,000 12MP photos or 978 minutes 1080P video recording
- Note: Actual storage capacity shown by a device's OS may be less than the capacity indicated on the product label due to different measurement standards. The available storage capacity is higher than 230GB.
- 15x faster than USB 2.0 drives; USB 3.1 Gen 1 / USB 3.0 port required on host devices to achieve optimal read/write speed; Backwards compatible with USB 2.0 host devices at lower speed. Read speed up to 130MB/s and write speed up to 30MB/s are based on internal tests conducted under controlled conditions , Actual read/write speeds also vary depending on devices used, transfer files size, types and other factors
- Stylish appearance, retractable, telescopic design with key hole
Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i parts.txt -c copy joined.mkv
The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, including codec and time-base characteristics. Incorrect duration metadata can lead to gaps or artifacts. Review the joined output, especially around each join, before using it for another upload or broadcast. Consult FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for its requirements and limitations.

If you mean YouTube HLS ingestion
HLS is a live-ingestion method for an encoder configured to send a rolling playlist and media segments. It is not a way to upload arbitrary chunks of a finished video and have YouTube turn them into one live event. YouTube’s HLS requirements include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Transport Stream (TS) media segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
- No byte ranges and no encryption other than HTTPS.
YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. The 1–4-second and five-segment requirements apply to YouTube’s HLS ingestion workflow, not to local FFmpeg file splitting. Use an HLS-compatible encoder and follow YouTube’s current live encoder guidance rather than treating the local segment command above as an HLS setup.

Common problems and fixes
- The split files do not appear in YouTube Live. A local segmenter only creates files. To broadcast, send a live feed through an encoder using the event’s server URL and stream key.
- Parts are longer or shorter than the requested duration. With stream copy, cuts typically depend on existing keyframes. Use a suitable re-encoding workflow with planned keyframes if more precise boundaries matter.
- A segment will not play correctly on its own. Check whether its container supports the copied streams and whether the intended player supports that combination. Try a short test with the target playback software before processing the full recording.
- The joined output has a gap, glitch, or stops early. Verify the parts are in order and have matching codecs and stream characteristics; check duration metadata; then test the output around the join points. FFmpeg concatenation is not universally safe for mismatched files.
- The live preview buffers or drops. Compare the sustained outbound capacity with the encoder bitrate, allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, reduce competing network use, and test again before the event.
- The broadcast has no sound or the wrong picture. Check the encoder’s input selection and stream mapping, then verify audio and video in YouTube Studio’s preview before going live.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Splitting, looping, or sending a recording through an encoder does not change who owns its content or whether it is suitable for YouTube. Before a long live event, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and channel policies. A technically successful stream is not, by itself, permission to broadcast the material.
