To make a separate single-page PDF for each page, use Acrobat desktop’s Extract pages tool and select Extract pages as separate files. On a Mac, Preview can also export selected pages by dragging them from the thumbnail sidebar to a folder. Choose a different workflow if you want larger page ranges, chapter-based files, or files limited by size.
Make one PDF for each page in Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop.
- Choose All tools > Organize pages > Extract pages.
- Select the page or page range you want to extract.
- Check Extract pages as separate files, then select Extract.
- When prompted, save the new PDF files. Choose whether to delete the extracted pages from the original; leave them in place if you want to keep the source PDF unchanged.
Adobe says bookmarks and article threads associated with extracted pages are not carried into the new documents. Adobe’s desktop extraction instructions were updated September 23, 2025.

Save selected pages as separate PDFs with Preview on Mac
- Open the PDF in Preview and show the page thumbnails.
- Select the page or pages you want to export.
- Drag the selection from the thumbnail sidebar to the desktop or a folder.
Adobe’s online guide to splitting PDFs describes this Preview workflow. If you need a file for every page in a long PDF, verify the result after dragging; the guide describes extracting selected pages, not a batch “one file per page” setting.
Use a different split method for page ranges or chapters
Acrobat desktop’s Split tool is for dividing a PDF into groups rather than necessarily creating one file for every page. Adobe documents splitting by page count, maximum file size, or top-level bookmarks. Use the option that matches the way you want the output organized:

- Fixed page count: divide the PDF into sections containing a chosen number of pages.
- Chapter or section boundaries: split using top-level bookmarks.
- File-size ceiling: split according to a maximum size.

Split a PDF in a browser, with privacy in mind
Acrobat on the web lets you upload a PDF and place divider lines between page thumbnails. Adobe says the resulting files are saved to Adobe cloud storage. Its help page, updated April 1, 2026, describes up to 22 divider lines, while Adobe’s public Split PDF page describes up to 20 output files and up to 19 divider lines. Because those published counts differ, check the current interface and your account context rather than relying on either number as a universal limit.

An online workflow requires uploading the document. Adobe’s public page says files are deleted unless you sign in to save them, while its help page says output is saved to Adobe cloud storage. For confidential PDFs, use a workflow approved for the document and check the service’s current terms and retention details before uploading.

Choose the right workflow
- A separate PDF for every page: Acrobat desktop, Extract pages, with Extract pages as separate files selected.
- Selected page(s) on a Mac: Preview’s thumbnail sidebar; drag the selection to a folder.
- Files grouped by a fixed number of pages, size, or chapter: Acrobat desktop’s Split tool.
- Browser-based splitting: Acrobat on the web, if uploading the file and cloud output suit your needs.
