You may not need to split it: YouTube allows verified accounts to upload videos up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first. If your video exceeds either limit—or you want viewers to watch it in chapters—split it with FFmpeg, check the resulting files, then upload them to one YouTube playlist in order.
Check whether splitting is necessary
First check the video’s duration and file size, and confirm your YouTube account is eligible for long uploads. YouTube’s long-video upload guidance says verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes, up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Copyright claims or strikes may affect eligibility. For files over 20 GB, YouTube recommends using an up-to-date browser.

If the file fits both limits, uploading it as one video is usually simpler: it avoids separate uploads and playlist ordering. If it exceeds 256 GB, YouTube suggests compressing it with video editing software and names H.264. Choose compression settings with your source codec, image quality, and target file size in mind; re-encoding can reduce quality.
Plan the parts
Decide whether the goal is to meet an upload limit or give viewers chapter-sized videos. Choose natural boundaries such as chapter breaks or scene changes, and leave a margin below the applicable upload limit. A split at an arbitrary timestamp may not land exactly there when using stream copy: FFmpeg’s segment muxer starts segments at keyframes, so the next available keyframe can shift the boundary. The muxer works best with constant-frame-rate video.

Split with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s segment muxer can write separate files. A stream-copy command avoids decoding and re-encoding the video and audio, but the right options depend on the source container, codecs, streams, and desired cut points. The following is a starting pattern, not a guaranteed command for every file:

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f segment -segment_time 3600 part_%03d.mp4
This requests segments of about one hour and names them part_000.mp4, part_001.mp4, and so on. Because cuts follow keyframes, actual segment durations may differ from the requested interval. Mapping all streams with -map 0 can also carry streams that are incompatible with the chosen output container; if the command fails, consult the FFmpeg segment muxer documentation and select streams and a container supported by your source.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →With -c copy, the encoded streams are copied rather than transcoded, avoiding generation loss and usually saving processing time. For exact boundaries, smaller outputs, or a more compatible codec, re-encode instead—but encoding takes computation and may reduce quality. FFmpeg explains the distinction in its stream-copy and transcoding documentation. If precise cut points matter, the video needs keyframes at those points; that can require re-encoding with suitable keyframe placement.

Check the files before uploading
- Confirm the expected number of parts exists and each file is below the applicable upload limit.
- Play the end of one part and the start of the next to check continuity, audio sync, and playback.
- If a boundary is awkward, adjust the cut or re-encode with an appropriate keyframe at the intended point.
Upload the parts and put them in playlist order
- Open YouTube Studio and use the upload workflow to import each part. YouTube’s upload instructions distinguish uploading a file from publishing it: uploading imports it; publishing makes it available.
- For each video, enter a clear title with its part number and set its details and visibility. Decide whether to publish immediately or schedule publication.
- In the upload details, add each video to the same existing playlist, or create a playlist and add the parts to it.
- Review the playlist and arrange the videos in the intended sequence. Check the playlist as a viewer to make sure the titles and order are clear.
If the playlist is meant to run as a 24/7 YouTube stream
A playlist of uploaded videos and a continuous live stream are different things: playlist ordering organizes videos for viewers, while keeping a YouTube live stream running requires a separate streaming setup. If your goal is a 24/7 stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer at home, handles uploaded video rather than a live camera, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
