For a shared weighed item, split its final line charge in proportion to each person’s share of the total weight. If the receipt is still pending, treat the amount as provisional and reconcile it when the final order record arrives.
Use the final receipt, not the estimate
For items sold by weight, the checkout amount may be an estimate. Coles says the final amount for weighed products is calculated after picking and packing, based on the amount received. Instacart also says the receipt adjusts if an item’s final weight differs from the requested or displayed weight. Once the order is complete, find the final charge and weight on the receipt or order details. The amount in the original cart is useful for a temporary estimate, but it may not match the amount actually charged.
Calculate each person’s share of a weighted item
For a shared line, use this formula:
Person’s share = final item charge × (person’s actual weight ÷ total actual weight shared)

For example, if a finalized line is $12.00 for 2 lb and one person receives 0.75 lb, that person owes $4.50: $12.00 × (0.75 ÷ 2). This is illustrative arithmetic. Keep the units consistent, and make sure the weights assigned to everyone account for the full amount being shared.
Apply the calculation only to people who share that item. A personal item belongs with the person who chose it; FareShare’s receipt guide likewise recommends reviewing receipt lines and assigning items to the appropriate people. See FareShare’s receipt-splitting guide.

Choose when to settle

Keep the rest of the bill auditable
Leave personal items with the person who bought them, and show shared costs as separate lines rather than burying them in the weighted-item calculation. For delivery, bags, tips, tax, discounts, or refunds, agree on an allocation rule and apply it consistently. There is no single household rule established here for allocating those costs.

If the final weight or charge changes because of a substitute, refund, or adjustment, update the affected share from the revised receipt. Check the completed order line against the available package or order information. If it still appears incorrect, contact the retailer or platform and revise the household balance after any correction is confirmed. Instacart describes receipt adjustments for final-weight or order changes and provides an incorrect-item-information route through its help process.

Make the split easy to verify
- Keep the completed receipt or order record where everyone can see the final line charge and weight.
- Record each person’s weight and calculation, then check that the shares add up to the final charge.
- If the final record is not available, label the amount provisional and settle the difference later.
- A receipt-splitting service such as FareShare can help organize line assignments, but a shared calculation and receipt are enough to do the split.
