Start with three safe checks: install available Windows updates and run a security scan, review storage before deleting files, then disable only unnecessary startup apps. These steps address common causes of sluggishness, but they are checks—not guaranteed fixes. Check how your PC performs after each one so you can tell whether anything changed.
1. Install updates and run a malware scan
Outdated software and malware are among the possible causes of poor performance. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, while malware may use processor and disk resources in the background. Neither an update nor a scan is guaranteed to make every computer faster.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the updates offered. Restart if Windows asks you to.
- Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then select Quick scan. Follow any instructions shown if a threat is detected.
- Use the PC normally and check whether the slowdown has changed before moving on.
These are built-in Windows tools; you do not need a separate cleanup or security utility for this first check. Microsoft’s performance guidance covers updates and malware as possible contributors to slow performance.
2. Check storage and clean up selectively
A drive with little free space can affect performance. First see what is using storage; do not delete files just because they are large or unfamiliar.

Find what is taking up space
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage. You can also open File Explorer and select This PC to check available space. Windows 10 users can open Settings > System > Storage.
Review Windows cleanup options
In Storage settings, review Cleanup recommendations or configure Storage Sense. Check the files and categories selected before confirming cleanup. Storage Sense works on the system drive; it does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. Microsoft explains its settings in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Be especially careful with Previous Windows installation(s). Removing this can eliminate the option to roll back to the previous Windows version. Do not select it unless you are sure you no longer need that recovery option. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing up drive space for details.
Move personal files only if you recognize them
If photos, videos, music, or documents are crowding the drive, you can move files you do not use often to external storage. This frees space on the PC while those files are stored elsewhere; the external device itself does not speed up the computer. After cleanup or moving files, check performance again.

3. Reduce unnecessary startup activity
Apps that launch when you sign in can lengthen startup and continue using resources in the background. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need to open automatically; some apps support devices or features you rely on.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the list. Select an app you recognize and do not need at startup, then choose Disable. Leave unfamiliar entries enabled until you know what they do.
- Restart the PC and see whether startup or everyday use feels more responsive.
If the PC is still slow
Sluggish performance can have several causes, and the three checks above may not address yours. Microsoft also identifies resource-heavy apps and background activity, visual effects, power mode, and drive optimization as areas to investigate. Do not manually defragment an SSD
Windows generally optimizes data drives automatically: it defragments hard drives and trims SSDs. Avoid third-party defragmenters and do not treat manual defragmentation as an SSD tune-up. Microsoft describes the built-in process in Defragment and optimize your data drives in Windows.

Consider hardware limits before buying an upgrade
Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps. Storage speed can matter more than capacity, and PCs with hard disk drives (HDDs) are typically slower to use than those with solid-state drives (SSDs). An SSD may be an option for a compatible PC that currently uses an HDD, but check the exact model, drive interface, size, and upgradeability first. The available guidance does not establish a compatible drive, price, or quantified speed gain for your particular PC.

Account for Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. As of October 2026, standard Windows Update no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice for details.
