If Wi-Fi is slow in one room but works well beside the router, the problem is likely local coverage. If it is slow everywhere—including on a wired connection—the broadband service, modem, or router may be the issue. Test in several places, try the no-cost fixes below, and buy coverage equipment only if the results point to a weak Wi-Fi link. A Wi-Fi setting cannot repair an outage or a slow connection reaching your home.
First, find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi or broadband
Ofcom frames the question as whether “your broadband or Wi-Fi” is slow, unreliable, or stopped altogether. The distinction matters: Wi-Fi carries data between your device and router, while broadband is the connection coming into your home. A weak signal in one area suggests a Wi-Fi coverage problem; poor performance close to the router can point to the router, modem, or incoming service.

Build a simple speed-test baseline
- Test near the router. Use the device and speed-test service you normally rely on. Record download speed, upload speed, and latency if shown.
- Test in the problem area. Keep the same device and test method where possible, and note the results.
- Repeat after each change. Testing in different locations before and after adjustments helps show whether a change improved coverage or whether performance is poor throughout the home.
Microsoft recommends measuring performance in different places before and after changes. A single test is only a snapshot: repeat it if results vary, and avoid comparing tests taken under very different household usage conditions.

Reduce competing traffic and test close to the router
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and other bandwidth-heavy activity temporarily, then test again. If practical, move the affected device closer to the router. You can also turn off or disconnect devices not in use to see whether concurrent activity is contributing. If performance improves near the router or when other traffic pauses, that points toward a local wireless or household-load issue rather than proving a broadband fault.

Move the router to a better position
Place the router or access point in a central, open spot if possible—not tucked in a cabinet, behind a large object, or at the far edge of the home. Distance, walls, building materials, and objects can weaken Wi-Fi. Keep avoidable barriers between the router, mesh points, and the devices that need a reliable connection. Google’s guidance also recommends positioning Wi-Fi equipment for better signal and performance.
Choose the band that fits the room
Wi-Fi bands trade reach for throughput, and the best choice depends on the router, device, distance, and obstacles:
Rank #2
- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
- 2.4 GHz: Generally reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, so it may be more reliable in a distant room. It can offer lower throughput and may be more congested.
- 5 GHz: Generally offers faster throughput at shorter range, making it a reasonable choice near the router when speed is the priority.
- 6 GHz: Can perform well at close range when both the router and device support Wi-Fi 6E. It does not reach as far, and incompatible devices cannot use it.
Some routers combine bands under one network name and select a band automatically. If your router exposes separate networks or band controls, try the suitable band and compare results in the same location. Performance depends on both the router and the client device.
Check congestion before changing channels
Nearby Wi-Fi networks and household devices can contribute to interference. Do not switch to a particular channel on the assumption that it is always best: available channels and router controls vary by model and country. Microsoft advises comparing local congestion on 2.4 GHz channels 1, 6, and 11, and considering the number of access points at similar signal strength on 5 GHz. If your router offers automatic channel selection, it may choose based on its own scan. If it does not, Apple recommends choosing the locally best-performing channel. Follow the router’s documentation and local rules.

Restart the network and check for updates
A restart can clear a temporary network glitch. The FCC Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau notes that powering a router off and back on can sometimes resolve a problem. Restart the router according to its instructions, then let it reconnect before testing again. Check the manufacturer’s support documentation for firmware updates, and enable automatic updates if the router supports them. Avoid changing advanced settings as a blanket fix; menus and recommended settings vary by equipment.
When coverage equipment may help
Use your test results to decide whether you need more coverage rather than a faster broadband plan. If speed is good near the main router but weak in a distant area, improve placement first. If the router cannot be moved, additional Wi-Fi equipment may help reach the weak spot. It distributes the existing connection; it does not guarantee higher broadband speed or fix an outage.

- WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi range extender | A localized, one-room coverage gap when moving the router is impractical. | Compatibility with your existing network and a placement where it can still receive a usable signal from the main router. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi system | Coverage needs across several rooms or floors. | Point placement, compatibility, backhaul quality, whether wired backhaul is available, and total purchase and setup cost. |
| Replacement router | The existing router is a capability bottleneck or cannot support the subscribed service and devices. | Whether the router and modem can handle the plan’s speeds and the Wi-Fi capabilities your devices use. |
No option is always fastest. The right choice depends on your home layout, the number of weak areas, equipment compatibility, placement flexibility, and whether a wired connection between access points is practical.
If Wi-Fi is still slow beside the router
Compare your router and modem capabilities with the speed included in your broadband plan. The FCC advises checking whether the router model can provide the subscribed speeds and notes that outdated equipment may need updating or replacement. If available, test with a wired connection to the router; this helps separate Wi-Fi performance from the incoming service, though the router and modem remain part of the path.

If performance remains below what your plan should provide even close to the router—or a wired test is also poor—check for an outage and contact your provider if needed. Wi-Fi adjustments can improve the link inside your home, but they cannot restore service during an outage or correct a provider-side speed problem.
