If your computer feels slow, start by finding the likely cause rather than expecting one setting to fix everything. On Windows, check for updates, malware, low storage, and unnecessary startup apps. On a Mac, inspect startup-disk space and memory use, quit unused apps, and check app compatibility or disk health. The right steps depend on what is slowing your particular device; software changes may have little effect on older hardware.
Why is your computer so slow?
Slow performance can have several causes at once. Microsoft identifies limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations as possible factors for Windows PCs. Apple’s guidance for a slow Mac focuses on startup-disk space, memory use, app compatibility, unused apps, and possible disk problems.

That means there is no reliable universal speed percentage to expect. Work through the checks that fit your symptoms, then see whether performance changes before moving on to more disruptive steps.
How to speed up a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
Microsoft’s support guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It recommends trying relevant steps because more than one cause may be affecting performance.
#1 Best Overall
- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
1. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install available updates. Also review Advanced options > Optional updates for relevant driver updates. Restart if Windows asks you to. (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows; Install Windows updates.)
2. Scan for malware
Malware can use CPU and disk resources in the background. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If the scan finds a threat, follow Windows Security’s instructions to address it, then check performance again. (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.)

3. Free disk space carefully
Low free space can affect performance. Use Settings > System > Storage to review storage and Storage Sense options, or search for Disk Cleanup. Check the selected file categories before deleting anything so you do not remove files you meant to keep. (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Reduce unnecessary startup apps
Apps that launch at sign-in can run in the background and compete for resources. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off apps you do not need to launch automatically. Leave essential security, accessibility, or workflow apps enabled if you rely on them. (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.)

How to speed up a slow Mac
5. Check free space on the startup disk
Apple notes that a Mac’s startup disk may not have enough free space. Review Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage for available space and storage recommendations; menu labels can vary by macOS version. Move files you want to keep to another disk or external storage, and delete only files you no longer need from the startup disk. External storage can make internal disk space available, but buying an external SSD by itself is not evidence that a Mac will run faster. (Apple: If your Mac runs slowly.)
6. See which apps are using memory
Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, then select the Memory tab to inspect memory use. Apple says, “You can use Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using.” If a particular app is using substantial memory, save your work and quit it if you are not using it; compare its needs with the memory available on your Mac. (Apple: If your Mac runs slowly.)
Rank #4

7. Quit unused apps and check compatibility
Quit apps you are not using, especially if they continue working in the background. If slowness began after installing an app or updating macOS, check that the app supports your Mac’s processor and graphics hardware and is compatible with your macOS version. (Apple: If your Mac runs slowly.)
8. Check the disk with Disk Utility if you suspect a problem
If you see disk-related errors or other signs that the disk may be having trouble, open Disk Utility, select the disk or volume, and use its First Aid feature to check for and attempt to repair errors. Disk Utility cannot address every cause of slow performance, so use this step when a disk problem is plausible rather than as a routine speed tweak. (Apple: If your Mac runs slowly.)

How to tell whether software fixes are enough
After trying the relevant checks, use the computer normally and see whether the slowdown persists. If an older PC remains slow despite updates, a malware scan, available storage, and a leaner startup, its hardware may be the limiting factor. Microsoft cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” Upgrading may be a long-term option, but compatibility depends on the exact computer model; verify supported parts and installation requirements before buying or replacing anything. (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.)
