1. Find out what is making the laptop slow

Before changing settings, check which component is under pressure.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk.
  3. Open Performance and watch CPU, memory, disk, and network activity while the laptop is slow.
  4. Open Startup apps and note programs that load when you sign in.

Close applications only when you recognize them and know you are not using them. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes just because they appear near the top of the list.

Task Manager result Likely cause Best first step
Memory stays near 90–100% Too many apps or insufficient RAM Close apps, reduce startup programs, then consider a RAM upgrade
Disk stays at 100% Updates, indexing, a slow hard drive, or a failing drive Check storage health, free space, and whether the laptop uses an HDD
CPU is high when idle Background software, malware, updates, or a runaway process Identify the process, scan for malware, and check startup items
CPU spikes during demanding work The processor may simply be too old for the workload Reduce workload or consider replacing the laptop

2. Restart the laptop

Choose Start > Power > Restart, rather than relying on Sleep indefinitely. A restart closes accumulated processes, completes some pending updates, and can clear temporary software problems. Also close unused browser tabs and applications; they continue using memory even when you are not actively looking at them.

3. Install Windows and relevant driver updates

Windows 11

Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. For optional drivers, open Advanced options > Optional updates. Install an optional driver when it relates to your hardware or fixes a device problem; do not install every optional item automatically.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.

Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general-release version. If the laptop is compatible, upgrading to Windows 11 is preferable; otherwise, plan a supported replacement or security strategy rather than continuing to use an unsupported installation indefinitely. LTSC editions have separate support lifecycles.

4. Scan for malware

Malware can consume CPU, memory, and disk resources. It can also make a laptop slow while appearing as an unfamiliar background process.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection > Quick scan.
  3. For a deeper check, select Scan options > Full scan.
  4. If malware keeps returning, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now.

Save your work before an Offline scan. The laptop will restart and scan outside the normal Windows environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then run Quick scan or select the deeper scan options.

If a third-party antivirus program is installed, it may disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Do not disable your only active antivirus protection to gain a small performance improvement.

5. Free up space on the system drive

Windows needs working space for updates, temporary files, and paging. A nearly full C: drive can make maintenance and general use less reliable.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Temporary files.
  3. Review each category and select Remove files.
  4. Return to Storage and use Storage Sense > Run Storage Sense now.

Check Downloads, personal files, and Previous Windows installation(s) carefully. Removing the previous installation removes the option to roll back to the earlier Windows version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage. Enable Storage Sense, then select Configure Storage Sense or run it now. You can also search for Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, select the categories to remove, and click OK.

Storage Sense primarily manages the Windows system drive, normally C:. It does not automatically clean every secondary drive or every personal folder.

6. Uninstall programs you no longer use

Windows 11

Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Select the three-dot menu beside an unused application and choose Uninstall.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and choose Uninstall.

Remove old game launchers, trial software, duplicate utilities, and applications you genuinely do not need. Do not uninstall hardware drivers, Microsoft components, or software whose purpose you cannot identify.

7. Disable unnecessary startup programs

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Review the Startup impact column.
  4. Right-click an unnecessary program and choose Disable.

Good candidates include game launchers, meeting applications, update helpers, and cloud tools that you do not need immediately after sign-in. Keep security software, touchpad utilities, graphics utilities, and hardware-related tools enabled unless you understand the consequences of disabling them.

You can also manage startup entries through Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.

8. Reduce background activity

Windows 11

For supported applications, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and set Background app permissions to Never.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Background apps. Turn off background access for apps that do not need to synchronize or send notifications.

Not every application exposes this Windows setting. Traditional desktop applications may continue running through their own preferences or Windows services, so also inspect the program’s settings when necessary.

9. Reduce Windows visual effects

  1. Select Start and search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  2. Open the result.
  3. On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

This removes animations and other effects. The interface may look less polished, but menus and window movement can feel more responsive on low-powered hardware.

10. Select a faster power mode when plugged in

Windows 11

Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance. Use it when connected to AC power and when maximum speed matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. In Power Options, select High performance; choose Show additional plans if necessary.

These modes are not free speed boosts. They consume more power, reduce battery life, and may make the laptop warmer. If the laptop is overheating, increasing its power mode can make throttling worse.

11. Optimize the drive correctly

  1. Search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  2. Select the drive.
  3. Click Optimize.

Windows handles drive types differently. A mechanical hard disk is defragmented, while an SSD receives an optimization operation associated with TRIM. Windows normally performs this work automatically, usually on a weekly schedule.

Do not repeatedly force-defragment an SSD or install a third-party “SSD defragmenter.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Repair damaged Windows system files

Use an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Run DISM first:

  • Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait for SFC to reach 100%. DISM repairs the Windows component store and can provide the files that SFC needs to repair missing or corrupted system files. These commands cannot add RAM, upgrade an old processor, or repair a physically failing drive.

13. Check the file system for errors

From an administrator Command Prompt, start with an online scan:

chkdsk C: /scan

To repair logical file-system errors, run:

chkdsk C: /f

If C: is in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y and restart when convenient. The /r option searches for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information, so it can take considerably longer. Back up important files before using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clicking sounds, disappearing files, repeated disk errors, or rapidly worsening performance indicate a possible failing drive. CHKDSK cannot make failing hardware reliable; replace the drive and restore from a verified backup.

14. Use a clean boot to find software conflicts

A clean boot temporarily starts Windows with essential drivers and a reduced set of startup services. It is useful when Task Manager does not reveal which program is causing the slowdown.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account and search for msconfig.
  2. Open System Configuration.
  3. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services.
  4. Select Disable all, then click Apply.
  5. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  6. Disable the enabled startup items in Task Manager.
  7. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.

Record what you disable. If the laptop becomes faster, re-enable items in groups until you identify the conflict. Restore normal startup afterward; a clean boot can temporarily remove functions provided by third-party software.

15. Upgrade the hardware when software cannot help

If the CPU is constantly maxed out during ordinary work, or the laptop has very limited memory, software cleanup will provide only modest gains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Upgrade When it helps Important check
Replace HDD with SSD Slow booting, long application launches, and constant disk activity Confirm the laptop supports the SSD’s size and interface
Add RAM Memory usage frequently approaches capacity and Windows pages to disk Check whether memory is upgradeable, soldered, and compatible
Replace a failing drive Clicking, file errors, disappearing data, or worsening disk performance Back up first and verify the replacement before wiping the old drive

Read the laptop manufacturer’s service manual before buying parts. An M.2 drive is not automatically compatible just because it fits the slot: M.2 storage can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe interfaces, and the laptop must support the selected type.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

When available, go to Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Keep the laptop connected to power and the internet. This option reinstalls the current Windows version while attempting to preserve apps, files, and settings.

Reset this PC

Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC. Keep my files retains personal files but removes apps and settings. Remove everything performs a more extensive reset. Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows image, while Local reinstall uses files already stored on the laptop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not manually restart the laptop during a reset. A clean installation from USB is more drastic still: it removes files, applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations, so use it only after making and checking a backup.

Performance advice to avoid

  • Do not manually defragment an SSD repeatedly. Windows already applies the appropriate optimization.
  • Do not disable every startup item. Security software, drivers, and hardware utilities may be needed.
  • Do not leave Best performance enabled permanently if battery life and temperature matter.
  • Do not assume Storage Sense cleans every drive or folder. Review its scope and settings.
  • Do not use registry cleaners as a routine speed fix. They can create new problems and are not part of Microsoft’s current performance procedure.
  • Do not disable Microsoft Defender unless another active security product is protecting the laptop.
  • Do not change memory settings just to increase “free RAM.” Confirm that memory pressure is actually the bottleneck in Task Manager.

FAQ

What is the quickest way to speed up an old Windows laptop?

Restart it, check Task Manager, disable unnecessary startup applications, remove unused software, free space on C:, and run a malware scan. If it still uses a mechanical hard drive, replacing that drive with a compatible SSD is usually a more significant improvement than software tweaks.

Should I use Windows 10 or Windows 11 on an old laptop?

Use the newest Windows version that the laptop officially supports and can run reliably. Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so an unsupported Windows 10 installation should not be treated as a permanent security solution. Check hardware compatibility before upgrading.

Does defragmenting an SSD make an old laptop faster?

No. Windows uses an SSD-appropriate optimization operation, including TRIM. Repeated manual defragmentation is unnecessary. Traditional defragmentation is intended for mechanical hard drives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding RAM always make an old laptop faster?

No. RAM helps when memory usage is regularly near capacity and Windows is paging data to disk. If CPU usage is the bottleneck or the laptop already has enough memory, an upgrade may make little difference. Check Task Manager before buying RAM.

The Bottom Line

Start with Task Manager, then work through updates, malware scans, storage cleanup, unused applications, startup programs, and background activity. Repair Windows only when there are signs of corruption, and avoid registry cleaners or aggressive SSD defragmentation. If the laptop still feels slow, a compatible SSD or RAM upgrade is usually the most practical improvement; a failing drive or unsupported Windows installation calls for replacement planning rather than more tweaks.
