These seven built-in commands help identify CPU, memory, storage, update, cache, and filesystem problems so you can take one targeted action instead of running risky “cleaner” scripts.

Before you start
- Open Terminal from Applications → Utilities.
- Use an administrator account where macOS requests authorization. Terminal shows no characters while you type a password.
- Do not paste commands containing
sudo,rm,rm -rf, orkillallunless you understand their exact effect and have a current backup. - Commands can vary between macOS releases. Check local documentation with commands such as
man toporman diskutil. Pressqto leave a manual page.
1. Check whether a restart may be overdue
Run
uptime
Read the result
The output includes the current time, how long the Mac has been running, logged-in users, and one-, five-, and 15-minute load averages. A high load average is not automatically bad: interpret it alongside CPU count, memory pressure, disk activity, and what the Mac is doing.

After startup, indexing, cloud synchronization, updates, or photo analysis can temporarily raise load. This command is a quick baseline, not a performance score.

2. Find a process using too much CPU
Run
top -o cpu -n 10
top continuously displays processes sorted by CPU use. Watch several refreshes and look for a process that stays high while the Mac is otherwise idle. It may be a browser tab, backup tool, cloud service, indexer, update, or demanding application.
Press Control-C to stop the display. Do not terminate an unfamiliar system process merely because it is near the top. For a graphical view, run open -a "Activity Monitor", then sort the CPU column. Apple explains Activity Monitor’s process and CPU views at its process guide and its CPU guide.
3. Check memory pressure rather than “free RAM”
Run
memory_pressure
Pay attention to the reported pressure state and swap-related information. Low “free” memory alone is not a diagnosis because macOS uses available memory for caching.
Rank #2

- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
- A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.
Open Activity Monitor with open -a "Activity Monitor" and select Memory. Check the Memory Pressure graph, Memory Used, Swap Used, Cached Files, and Compressed Memory. Apple’s memory guidance is available at this Activity Monitor guide.
If pressure is high, close the memory-heavy app or browser tabs and see whether the problem returns. A purge utility is not a substitute for addressing the process causing pressure.
4. Check space on the startup volume
Run
df -h /
The command reports total, used, available, and percentage-used space for the startup filesystem. A nearly full volume can cause slow file operations, installation failures, and instability. There is no universal percentage that every Mac must keep free; investigate when the volume is nearly full or macOS reports low storage.

On macOS Ventura 13 and later, open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. Remove identifiable Downloads, old installers, large media, unused apps, old device backups, virtual machines, or project archives. Apple’s storage steps are at Apple Support. Advanced users can inspect APFS layout with diskutil apfs list, but should not alter containers casually.
5. Locate large user caches without deleting them
Run
du -sh ~/Library/Caches/* 2>/dev/null | sort -h | tail -20
du -shestimates each item’s size.2>/dev/nullhides permission-error messages.sort -hsorts human-readable sizes.tail -20displays the largest entries.
This only measures caches. It does not speed up the Mac. Deleting a specific corrupted or oversized cache can occasionally help, but broad deletion forces apps to rebuild data, may remove useful offline content, and can cause unexpected behavior. Use Storage settings first and delete only files you recognize. macOS can clear certain caches in Safe Mode and recreate them; see Apple’s storage guidance.
6. Check for macOS updates
Run
softwareupdate --list
This checks Apple’s software-update service; it does not install anything. If an update is listed, the installation form is:

softwareupdate --install --all
Save work and keep a backup. Installation may require administrator authentication and a restart. Managed Macs may restrict it, and major upgrades are not installed in every situation. Updates can fix bugs and compatibility problems, but they are not guaranteed speed boosts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Verify the startup volume
Run
diskutil verifyVolume /
This checks the startup volume’s filesystem; it does not repair it. A successful result says the volume appears OK. Errors, or a message that the mounted volume cannot be checked, require a different step.
- Back up important data.
- Open Disk Utility and choose View → Show All Devices.
- Select the relevant volume or container and run First Aid.
- If the startup volume cannot be repaired while booted normally, follow Apple’s Recovery-mode procedure rather than using destructive commands.
Apple includes disk verification and repair in its slow-Mac guidance: If your Mac runs slowly.

Choose the command from the symptom
| Symptom | Start with | Likely next action |
|---|---|---|
| Heat, fan noise, battery drain | top -o cpu -n 10 |
Identify and update, close, or troubleshoot the responsible app or service. |
| Beach balls with many apps open | memory_pressure |
Use Activity Monitor’s Memory tab and close the offending workload. |
| Slow file operations or low-storage warnings | df -h / |
Use Storage settings to remove known, unnecessary files. |
| Only one app is slow | top -o cpu -n 10 |
Update, reset, or consult that app’s support documentation. |
| Repeated disk errors | diskutil verifyVolume / |
Back up and run Disk Utility First Aid. |
| Slowness immediately after login | uptime plus Activity Monitor |
Review login items, cloud sync, backups, indexing, and recently installed software. |
Why common “speed-up” commands are poor advice
purgeflushes caches; that is not a general performance improvement and can make relaunches slower.sudo periodic daily weekly monthlyis a legacy maintenance suggestion, not a reliable universal speed boost on modern macOS.sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*is an unnecessarily broad deletion command and should not be used as routine maintenance.
Do not treat a large System Data category as junk. Apple says it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary files, fonts, plug-ins, and app-support data managed partly by macOS. See Apple’s System Data explanation.
When Terminal cannot fix the Mac
These commands diagnose common causes; they cannot repair failing hardware, insufficient memory for a demanding workflow, thermal faults, an aging drive, unsupported software, or an application bug. If the Mac remains slow after a normal restart and targeted cleanup:
- Test in Safe Mode.
- Review login items and recently installed software.
- Observe Activity Monitor for several minutes.
- Run Apple Diagnostics.
- Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if disk or hardware failure is suspected.
Apple’s general troubleshooting flow centers on Storage, Activity Monitor, and Disk Utility rather than paid cleaners: Apple’s slow-Mac guide.
