You can sort and filter a Google Sheets range directly; you do not need to convert it into a Sheets table. To keep records intact, select every column in the data before sorting. For a shared spreadsheet, use a standard filter if everyone should see the same filtered state, or a filter view if each person needs a separate view.
How to sort a Google Sheets table or range
These menu instructions are for Google Sheets on a computer. A “table” can simply be a selected range of rows and columns; the newer Sheets table feature is optional.

Select the complete data range, including all columns whose values belong to the same records. Sorting just one column can separate its values from the rest of each row.

If the range has a header row, freeze the first row so the labels stay visible: choose View > Freeze > 1 row.

Choose Data > Sort range > Advanced range sorting options.

Select Data has header row if the range includes headers. Choose the column to sort by and its order, then click Sort.
Sort by multiple columns
In the advanced range sorting options, click Add another sort column to add a tie-breaker. The first selected column determines the primary order; later columns sort rows within ties. For example, sort first by department and then by surname to group people by department and alphabetize names inside each group.

Sort an entire sheet by one column
Right-click the letter at the top of the column you want to use, then choose Sort sheet A to Z or Sort sheet Z to A. This sorts the sheet rather than only a selected range.
Sort by color
Create a filter for the range, open its filter control, and choose Sort by color. Google documents this for text and fill colors, including conditional-formatting colors; alternating colors are not supported for this sort option. See Google’s sorting and filtering instructions.
How to filter a column in Google Sheets

Select the range to filter, then choose Data > Create a filter. You can also right-click a cell or range and choose Create a filter.

Open the filter control in the range’s header area.

Choose how to narrow the rows: set a condition, check or clear specific values, search for values, or use the color options.

To clear the filter, choose Data > Remove filter, or right-click and choose Remove filter.

A standard filter changes which rows are visible to everyone with access to the spreadsheet. Anyone with edit access can change or remove it. Google notes that filter settings persist even if the filtered data is removed; remove the filter itself to reset those settings.
If “Create a filter” is unavailable
Google lists several possible causes: merged cells, hidden rows or columns, conditional-formatting rules, data-validation rules, or insufficient access. Check those conditions and your permissions before trying again.

To create one, choose Data > Create filter view, then sort or filter within the view. Save it if you have edit access and want to reuse it. Google’s filter and filter view guide covers the available controls.

Should you use a formula instead?
Use the menus when you want to sort or filter the existing range interactively. Use a formula when you want a formula-generated result. Google’s SORT function documentation gives this syntax:
=SORT(range, sort_column, is_ascending, [sort_column2, is_ascending2, ...])
For example, =SORT(A2:B26, 1, TRUE) returns the range ordered ascending by its first column. The sort-column argument can be an index within the range or a single-column range with the same number of rows. Use TRUE for ascending and FALSE for descending order; optional column-and-order pairs add further sort keys.
The FILTER function returns rows or columns from a source range that meet specified conditions. That makes it useful when you want matching data returned as formula results rather than manually hiding nonmatching rows. See Google’s FILTER function documentation.

When does the Sheets table feature matter?
Google Sheets tables add structure to a data range, including column types and table-level actions. Tables also support filter views, with each view able to have its own sorting and filtering configuration. You can still sort and filter an ordinary range using the steps above; creating a table is not a prerequisite. See Google’s overview of tables in Sheets.
Does sorting change formulas that refer to cells?
Google notes that sorting a filtered range does not rewrite a formula reference such as =B2 when B2 is within that range. If a formula points to a cell, do not assume the reference will be rewritten to follow the record that moved during a sort.
