Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows 10 low-memory errors do not always mean you need more RAM. They can be caused by too many open programs, a leaking application, an undersized page file, low disk space, malware, damaged system files, defective memory, or hardware that no longer suits your workload.
Start with Task Manager to identify what is actually exhausted. Then work through the low-risk fixes below before changing advanced settings or buying hardware.

First, identify what is running out
Windows uses several related resources that are easy to confuse:
- Physical memory (RAM): The installed memory used by Windows, applications, drivers, and hardware.
- Available memory: RAM that can be allocated immediately.
- Committed memory: Memory Windows has promised to applications and that must be backed by RAM or the page file.
- Virtual memory: Disk-backed memory, usually provided through a page file, used when RAM is under pressure.
- Free disk space: Storage needed for paging, temporary files, updates, crash dumps, and application caches. Low disk space is not the same as low RAM, but it can cause related errors.
A single application can also report “out of memory” because of its own limit, a memory leak, corrupted data, or an unusually large workload—even when Windows still has available RAM.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Select More details if necessary, then:
- On Processes, sort by Memory.
- On Performance > Memory, note installed RAM, usage, available memory, committed memory, cached memory, and paged and non-paged pool.
- Open Performance > Disk. A disk near 100% activity while memory is full can indicate heavy paging.
- Review Startup and disable only clearly unnecessary programs.
Task Manager can show memory, CPU, disk, and network consumption and can close an unresponsive application. See Microsoft’s guidance on Task Manager and Windows configuration tools.
| What you see | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| One process dominates Memory | Investigate a leak, add-in, incompatible version, or unusually large workload. |
| Many programs collectively consume RAM | Reduce simultaneous applications, browser tabs, sync tools, and launchers. |
| Committed memory is near its limit | Check page-file settings and system-drive free space. |
| Memory is moderate but Windows is slow | Check the drive, malware, CPU load, startup programs, overheating, or system corruption. |
| Memory is high but the process list does not explain it | Investigate drivers, non-paged pool usage, malware, and hardware. |
There is no universal “bad” memory percentage. Windows deliberately uses RAM for caching, so the percentage matters less than available memory, commit pressure, errors, and the workload.
Recommended Free Tools
Do this first: a five-minute procedure
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Close unused applications and browser tabs.
- In Task Manager, end a process only when you have identified it as unresponsive or clearly misbehaving.
- Remove unnecessary browser extensions and pause demanding work such as video exports, virtual machines, large builds, or image processing.
- Update the application that produced the error and check whether the problem returns after a fresh launch.
Microsoft also recommends restarting, freeing disk space, scanning for malware, and managing startup applications when troubleshooting poor Windows performance. Microsoft’s performance guidance covers these steps.
If the error occurs only once, it may have been temporary pressure. If the same application or workload repeatedly triggers it, continue with the targeted sections below.
Free space on the Windows drive
Windows may be unable to expand virtual memory or create temporary files when the system drive is nearly full. Freeing space can therefore resolve memory-allocation errors without adding RAM.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the storage categories and open Temporary files.
- Select only categories you understand, then choose Remove files.
- Configure Storage Sense if appropriate.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and move or delete large personal files after backing them up.
You can also use Disk Cleanup. Do not manually delete unknown files from C:Windows, C:Program Files, or user-profile folders. Be particularly careful with Downloads, previous Windows installations, and recovery files. Free space on another drive may not help if the page file remains on a nearly full system drive. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense and cleanup instructions.

For most systems, Windows should manage the page file automatically. It can help prevent allocation failures, but it is stored on disk and is far slower than RAM. A larger page file may stop an error while leaving the computer extremely sluggish because it is paging heavily.
Use automatic management first
- Press Windows + R, type
sysdm.cpl, and press Enter. - Open Advanced.
- Under Performance, select Settings.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Under Virtual memory, select Change.
- Enable Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
When manual sizing is justified
Microsoft documents a Windows 10 issue in which applications that frequently allocate memory can encounter random out-of-memory errors because an automatically managed page file grows too slowly. For that specific scenario, Microsoft documents clearing automatic management, choosing Custom size, and setting the initial size to 1.5 times installed RAM, then restarting. If errors continue, Microsoft says to increase the initial size further. Read the full Microsoft page-file-growth workaround.

- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
This is not a universal performance formula. Ensure the selected drive has adequate free space, do not disable the page file, and do not set an enormous value blindly. A demanding virtual machine, development build, or creative workload may need more committed memory, but the durable solution may be more RAM, a smaller workload, or a program-specific configuration change.
Scan for malware
Malware can consume memory, CPU, and disk resources. Scan when usage is unexplained, an unfamiliar process appears, or the computer also shows redirects, advertising, or other abnormal behavior.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Windows Security, then Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Quick scan.
- If symptoms persist, open Scan options and run a fuller scan.
If Windows Security is malfunctioning, consider an offline scan or reputable on-demand second-opinion scanner. Avoid running multiple antivirus products with overlapping real-time protection. A malware scan is sensible, but not every low-memory error is malware-related.
Test the physical RAM
Repeated crashes, blue screens, corrupted files, or errors that occur across unrelated applications require hardware investigation.
- Save your work and close applications.
- Press Windows + R, enter
mdsched, and press Enter. - Select Restart now and check for problems.
- Allow Windows Memory Diagnostic to complete.
- After restarting, review the result notification. If it is not shown, inspect the MemoryDiagnostics-Results log in Event Viewer.
The default test is Standard. During the diagnostic, press F1 to choose Extended, then press F10 to apply the setting. Microsoft describes these controls in its Windows Memory Diagnostic guidance.
If the test reports an error, back up important data, power off, and reseat removable RAM only if the manufacturer permits it. Test modules individually where possible, check compatibility requirements, and replace the failed module or seek professional service. A passing test reduces suspicion but does not rule out every intermittent or compatibility-related fault.
Check for a memory leak
A leak is more likely when one process’s memory usage continually rises, the error returns after restarting the same program, or the application works after a fresh launch but degrades during a long session.
- Record the process name and its memory usage over time in Task Manager.
- Update the application.
- Disable extensions, plug-ins, add-ins, overlays, or mods.
- Test with a new profile or clean configuration.
- Reinstall only after preserving settings and data.
- Check the application vendor’s support pages or use an alternative if the bug remains unresolved.
High memory use alone does not prove a leak: large projects, caches, and legitimate workloads can require substantial memory.
Use a clean boot to isolate background conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping identify a third-party service or startup application that conflicts with the affected software.

When finished, restore normal startup: open msconfig, choose Normal startup on General, clear Hide all Microsoft services on Services, select Enable all, re-enable the startup items you changed, and restart. Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure includes these restoration steps.
Repair damaged Windows components
Use DISM and SFC when memory errors accompany freezes, failed updates, broken Windows features, or other signs of system corruption. Open Command Prompt as administrator, then run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100%. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source SFC uses. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it cannot repair some files, review the CBS log, rerun after DISM, or use Windows recovery options. If DISM cannot use Windows Update, Microsoft documents /Source and /LimitAccess alternatives. See Microsoft’s SFC guidance and expanded DISM/SFC repair instructions.
Update drivers and applications
Prioritize the graphics driver for games and creative software; storage-controller and chipset drivers; virtual-machine software; antivirus or endpoint-security software; browsers and extensions; and any program that recently began crashing.
Use Windows Update first, then obtain drivers from the PC, motherboard, or component manufacturer. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities that install unverified packages. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance also covers driver checks, clean boot, disk repair, DISM, and SFC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to upgrade RAM, replace the drive, or replace the PC
Upgrade RAM when Task Manager repeatedly shows very little available memory during ordinary work, paging is routine, and the device supports additional or larger modules. Check the exact PC or motherboard model, maximum capacity, DDR generation, module type, speed limits, slot availability, and whether memory is soldered. Laptop modules and desktop modules are not interchangeable, and compatibility matters more than a generic “Windows 10 RAM requirement.”
- More RAM: Best for a healthy computer whose normal workload repeatedly exceeds capacity.
- SSD: Makes paging and general storage operations more responsive than a mechanical drive, but does not add RAM or fix defective memory.
- Page-file adjustment: Low-cost and sometimes effective for allocation failures, but paging remains slower than RAM.
- Replacement PC: Sensible when RAM is soldered, the CPU or drive is inadequate or failing, or the device cannot run supported Windows.
- Workload reduction: Free, but not always practical for demanding work.
Back up data before opening the device, performing hardware work, repairing disks, or using recovery tools. If you buy memory, use the manufacturer’s compatibility information or a reputable selector such as Crucial’s memory selector or Kingston’s memory finder.
Windows 10 support ended—what that means now
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system can continue to run, but normal technical assistance, feature updates, and security updates have ended. Fixing a low-memory error does not restore that support.

As of August 2026, eligible consumer devices may use Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027, subject to edition, geography, eligibility, enrollment conditions, and Microsoft’s current terms. Microsoft also describes Microsoft 365 security updates on Windows 10 as continuing through October 10, 2028; that does not provide general Windows 10 support. A free Windows 11 upgrade applies only to eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices that meet Windows 11 hardware requirements.
Use Microsoft’s current Windows 10 support page and end-of-support overview for live eligibility and terms. ESU is a temporary security bridge, not a performance upgrade or substitute for supported hardware.
If the computer will not boot normally
Try Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment, then remove a recently installed driver or application and back up important files. If crashes continue, prioritize the RAM test and storage-health checks. Do not repeatedly force shutdowns while Windows is writing data. If the machine cannot remain stable long enough to back up files, stop troubleshooting and use another computer or professional service to protect the data.
What not to do
- Do not disable the page file merely to save disk space.
- Do not set an enormous page file blindly.
- Do not use registry cleaners or “RAM booster” utilities as a primary fix.
- Do not delete system files manually to free storage.
- Do not install multiple real-time antivirus products.
- Do not assume an SSD fixes low-memory errors.
- Do not run DISM or SFC in a non-elevated terminal.
Frequently asked questions
Can a page file fix low RAM?
It can prevent some allocation failures, but it cannot provide RAM-level performance. Persistent paging means the workload still exceeds physical memory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should virtual memory always be 1.5 times RAM?
No. That figure is Microsoft’s workaround for a documented slow page-file-growth issue in Windows 10, not a universal rule.
Is 100% memory usage always bad?
No. Windows uses RAM for caching. Persistent errors, exhausted commit, or severe paging are more meaningful signs than a percentage alone.
Can an SSD solve low-memory errors?
No. It can make paging less painful and improve general responsiveness, but it does not increase RAM.
Should I use a RAM cleaner?
No. Close the responsible application, remove unnecessary startup software, and fix the underlying leak or workload instead.
Can Windows 10 still be used safely in 2026?
It still runs, but general Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible users should review Microsoft’s time-limited ESU terms or move to supported Windows hardware.
