Why a question makes a loop useful
Time-loop puzzles often ask you to build understanding across repeated attempts. The world may reset, but your knowledge can accumulate: a character’s schedule, a newly accessible place, or a clue that points somewhere else. Outer Wilds Creative Director Alex Beachum described the game’s open-world exploration as being about answering questions about the world, rather than following explicit objectives. That design idea offers a practical starting point: give each cycle a question to answer.

Before setting out, write one concrete question, such as “Does the character leave the courtyard before the alarm?” or “Can I reach the sealed room after finding the symbol?” “Explore more” is too broad to tell you whether a loop produced useful information.

Keep notes short enough to use while playing. A pocket notebook works, but a text note or spreadsheet is fine. For each useful attempt, record these items:

- Question: What were you trying to find out?
- Observation: What did you directly see or hear, and where and when did it happen?
- Change: What was different from the previous attempt?
- Persistence: What reset, and what remained available afterward?
- Interpretation: What do you think the observation means?
- Next test: What action could support or disprove that interpretation?
Keep observation and interpretation distinct. “The guard was gone at the bell” is an observation; “the bell sends the guard inside” is an explanation to test. That separation makes it easier to revise a mistaken theory without losing the clue that prompted it.
Record connections, not just isolated facts. A symbol may point to a location; a character’s remark may explain how to reach it. Mobius Digital’s account of developing Outer Wilds says clues were spread across planets and could point to other clues or hidden locations. The team’s playtesters wrote discoveries on notepads, and the developers built an onboard ship computer to track them. Use the game’s built-in journal or log where available, and add your own notes for tentative theories and next steps the game does not capture.

Check what survives a reset
Do not assume every game resets everything—or that knowledge alone advances every puzzle. Early in a game, identify which kinds of progress carry over. Check the journal, map, computer, inventory, and any status screens after a reset.
Recommended Free Tools
- Information: Does the game record clues, locations, or conversations?
- Access: Do doors, routes, or shortcuts stay open?
- Items: Do objects stay with you, return to their original place, or need to be found again?
- Actions and relationships: Do characters remember you, forget you, or respond differently because of earlier events?
- Completed tasks: Must you repeat them, or can you skip or delegate them?
The Forgotten City illustrates why these rules are game-specific. Its creator, Nick Pearce, described using the loop wisely to advance the investigation and solve puzzles. A Game Developer interview also reports that characters can forget the player while the player remembers them; dialogue shortcuts and delegation can help avoid repeating some completed tasks. Treat those as mechanics of that game, not assumptions about other loops.

Turn an explanation into a test
Once you have a plausible interpretation, make the next loop distinguish it from alternatives. A useful hypothesis predicts something observable: “If the lever controls the gate, pulling it before the guard arrives should leave the gate open.” If the result does not happen, update the theory instead of treating the attempt as wasted.
- Choose one unresolved question. Prefer the question that blocks progress or connects several clues.
- Write competing explanations. Keep them brief; for example, “the door opens at a certain time” versus “the door opens after the character leaves.”
- Pick an action that separates them. Change the timing or route while keeping other factors as consistent as the game allows.
- Record the outcome. Note what happened, including a failed attempt that rules out an explanation.
- Update the next step. Mark the question answered, revise the hypothesis, and choose a new test.
If a cycle teaches you nothing, change the question, investigate a different lead, or use a discovered shortcut. Repeating a route is useful only when it tests something or is needed to reach a new situation.

Adapt the routine to the game
Different games place different demands on your notes. Outer Wilds emphasizes environmental exploration and clues that connect across locations; its Creative Director described the repeating cycle as making an evolving solar system replayable. His interview discussed a 20-minute cycle in the version at that time, not a universal loop length or a claim about every current game version. The Forgotten City emphasizes mystery, deduction, conversations, and influencing the day’s outcome. Other games may ask you to make explicit entries or perform an action even after you have learned the answer.

The same distinction helps in loop puzzles: preserve both what you concluded and why.

- 15 Number Slide Puzzle.
- Classic puzzle for the whole family.
- Goal is to get all the numbers to be in order.

Use the game’s own tracking as the authoritative record of what it has registered. Your personal notes are most useful for questions, uncertain interpretations, connections, and planned tests. If the game requires an explicit entry, interaction, or route, knowing the answer may not be enough to trigger progress.
