Draw the seats before placing names: on a circle, the first and last positions are neighbors, and rotating an unmarked table does not create a new arrangement.
This guide gives a repeatable paper-and-pencil method, a six-person worked example, the circular-counting rule that prevents duplicate cases, and checks for the mistakes that make otherwise correct solutions fail.

What makes a round-table riddle different?
In a row, each interior person has two neighbors but the two ends have only one. A circle has no ends: the seat after the last seat is the first seat again. That wraparound affects every “next to,” “not next to,” and “one person between” clue.
A second difference is rotational symmetry. If there is no marked seat, moving everyone one place clockwise leaves all relative relationships unchanged. Those drawings are the same seating order, not separate answers. You can remove the duplicates by fixing one person in a reference seat. The Department of Education (Philippines) states the circular rule as (n−1)! arrangements for n distinct people; its five-person example gives 4! = 24 (Finite Mathematics 2).

Do not automatically identify a mirror image with the original. Reversing the order can change who is on someone’s left or right, so it is a different case unless the question explicitly says that clockwise and counterclockwise reversals are equivalent.
Set up a constraint worksheet
1. Draw and label the seats
Draw a circle with one empty space for each person. Number the spaces temporarily (1, 2, 3 …) so you can refer to them while testing cases. Add arrows for clockwise and counterclockwise if the wording uses left, right, clockwise, or counterclockwise.
Mark physical features before placing names. A window, kitchen, doorway, stage, or host’s chair creates a genuinely fixed reference. If the puzzle says “nearest the kitchen,” draw the kitchen and identify exactly which seat or seats qualify. If the table is unmarked, choose one seat as “seat 1” solely to remove rotational duplication; that choice does not assert a real-world location.

2. Make a clue list before solving
Copy each sentence into a separate line and classify it. Avoid relying on memory while you draw: a forgotten negative clue is a common reason a plausible diagram fails.
| Clue wording | Constraint to record | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| “A sits next to B” | A and B occupy neighboring seats. | There are two possible sides; preserve both unless another clue chooses one. |
| “A does not sit next to B” | Remove both seats adjacent to A from B’s options. | Check the wraparound pair between the last and first positions. |
| “A sits opposite B” | Place A and B across the diameter. | An exact opposite seat exists only when the number of seats is even. |
| “There is one person between A and B” | A and B are separated by two seat steps, with one occupied seat between them. | This is not the same as “next to” or “opposite.” |
| “A is left/right of B” | Choose an orientation and put A in the specified direction from B. | Left and right reverse if you view the circle from the other direction; keep your arrow. |
| “A sits nearest the window/kitchen” | Restrict A to the seat or seats adjacent to that feature. | Environmental clues can be more restrictive than social clues. |
| “A and B cannot sit together” | Mark their two adjacent possibilities as forbidden. | “Together” normally means adjacent unless the puzzle defines it differently. |
For each line, write the affected people and the seats that remain possible. This converts prose into a small, visible constraint system.
Anchor the diagram before filling it
Use a genuinely fixed location first
If one person has a unique seat, place that person immediately. A physical landmark is stronger than a preference: “Les sits nearest the kitchen” in the Open University’s dinner-party activity supplies the initial anchor. Once Les is fixed, every left, right, opposite, and neighboring relationship can be read from the same diagram (OpenLearn, “Organising a dinner party”).
If a feature permits two seats rather than one, mark both as candidates instead of choosing arbitrarily. A later clue can eliminate one without creating a hidden assumption.

Break rotational symmetry when no seat is marked
For an unmarked table, write any named person in seat 1. This is a bookkeeping anchor, not a claim that the person sits at a particular compass point. With six people, fixing one leaves five people to arrange, so there are 5! = 120 circular orders rather than 6! = 720 linear orders. NRICH uses that six-person comparison to explain why fixing one person avoids repeated rotations (NRICH, “Amicable Arrangements”).
Choose an anchor that also appears in many clues when possible. That makes the subsequent options easier to see, but any fixed person produces the same set of relative solutions.
Place the most constrained guests next
After anchoring, rank people by how few seats they can use. A person with an opposite-seat requirement, a fixed feature, and two “not next to” restrictions should be handled before someone mentioned only once.
Reserve space for required neighbors
When A must sit next to B, treat the pair as a two-seat block for the moment. If A is already placed, B can use only the two adjacent seats. If neither is placed, test each candidate edge of the circle, but immediately mark the other seat beside A as unavailable to anyone who would violate a different clue.
Do not fill a seat that a required pair may need. For example, if two empty seats are the only adjacent spaces left for a required pair, keep both open even if an unconstrained person could technically go there.
Use opposites and distance clues as filters
For an even number of seats, an opposite relationship determines one exact seat once either person is placed. “One person between” determines two seats (one in each direction) from a placed person. Mark both candidates and carry them as a small branch rather than guessing.
Apply negative clues immediately. If Jordan cannot sit next to Aria, cross out both seats beside Aria before considering Jordan. Early elimination prevents a long, attractive but invalid arrangement.

Keep environmental restrictions visible
A window or kitchen is not just decoration. Circle the seats that satisfy each feature and write the restriction beside the relevant name. In the OpenLearn activity, window and kitchen information narrows the remaining choices after the initial placements; the source’s labeled diagram should be used to check those feature-specific conditions rather than inferred from a name list alone.

Controlled trial and error is legitimate. The Open University notes that there is often no single best approach, but that useful strategies make the work manageable. A branch should represent a genuinely different placement, not a whole-table rotation of a case you already tested.
- Write the assumption. For example, “Case A: Faisal is clockwise from Les.”
- Propagate it. Place every forced neighbor, opposite, and forbidden seat that follows from that assumption.
- Check for an immediate contradiction. Close the case if a person needs two seats, a required pair is separated, or a negative clue is broken.
- Start the next case from the last confirmed diagram. Do not carry a speculative placement from Case A into Case B.
- Stop when all names are placed and every clue passes. If two cases survive, the puzzle has multiple solutions unless an unstated condition distinguishes them.
A useful notation is a small case tree: write “A” and “B” beside the two candidate seats, then cross out a branch at the first failed rule. This is faster and less error-prone than repeatedly redrawing the entire table.
Worked example: the six-person dinner riddle
The OpenLearn activity uses Les, Sandy, Faisal, Gareth, Jordan, and Aria. Its constraints combine a fixed kitchen seat for Les, pairs that must not be adjacent, a required Sandy–Aria adjacency, a Jordan–Aria opposition restriction, and window-related limits. The exact feature labels belong to the source diagram, so use that diagram when checking those environmental clues.
Step 1: Anchor Les
Put Les in the seat nearest the kitchen. Number the remaining seats clockwise. This removes rotation ambiguity because the kitchen is a marked location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 2: Protect the required Sandy–Aria edge
Sandy and Aria must be neighbors. Reserve an adjacent pair for them rather than placing either in a seat that would leave no neighboring space for the other. Test the pair’s two orientations separately: Sandy–Aria and Aria–Sandy.
Step 3: Apply the exclusions
Cross out any seat beside a person whom a clue forbids. Remove positions that would put Jordan opposite Aria, and remove seats disallowed by the window condition. At this point, Faisal, Gareth, and Jordan generally have fewer legal positions than the unfiltered diagram suggests.

Step 4: Propagate each surviving case
When a candidate puts Faisal beside Les, record the resulting neighbor on Les’s other side and test whether Sandy’s reserved pair still fits. If a branch forces Jordan into an excluded window position or next to a forbidden person, reject that branch immediately.
Step 5: Read the surviving order
The source’s final arrangement can be read clockwise as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Les — Faisal — Sandy — Aria — Gareth — Jordan — back to Les.
This sequence gives Faisal next to Les and Sandy, Sandy next to Aria, Aria opposite Les, and Jordan next to Gareth. Jordan is also one person away from Aria in the circular sense. Use the OpenLearn table’s labeled kitchen and window positions to verify every remaining environmental and non-adjacency rule; a bare name sequence cannot show those features by itself.
| Check | How to inspect the circle | Result in the stated order |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen placement | Compare Les’s seat with the marked kitchen seat. | Confirmed by the anchored placement. |
| Sandy–Aria adjacency | Look for the edge between their seats. | They share an edge. |
| Aria opposite Les | Count halfway around the six-seat circle. | Aria is three seat steps from Les. |
| Jordan–Aria restriction | Inspect the seat directly across from Aria. | Jordan is not opposite Aria. |
| Wraparound adjacency | Check the final-to-first edge. | Jordan is next to Les across the join. |
| Window and other exclusions | Compare each name with the source diagram’s marked seats. | Check against the labeled OpenLearn diagram. |
The important lesson is the order of operations, not memorizing this particular name sequence: fixed feature, required pair, exclusions, controlled cases, then a complete audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Count circular arrangements without double-counting
When a question asks “how many” rather than “which seating,” use the factorial rule after deciding whether the table has a marked seat.
| Situation | Count | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| n distinct people in a row | n! | Every position is distinct. |
| n distinct people around an unmarked circle | (n−1)! | Fix one person and arrange the remaining n−1. |
| Five people around an unmarked circle | 4! = 24 | The DepEd Finite Mathematics 2 example. |
| Six people around an unmarked circle | 5! = 120 | NRICH’s six-person symmetry example. |
If the table has a marked chair or feature, rotations may become distinct because moving everyone changes who is nearest that feature. Likewise, do not divide by two for a mirror image unless the puzzle explicitly treats clockwise and counterclockwise orders as identical. Left/right clues normally make the reversal distinguishable.

Paired-neighbor problems: a second model
NRICH’s “Amicable Arrangements” asks readers to seat three elves and their three best friends so that every elf is next to that elf’s own friend. The activity recommends neutral labels such as E1, E2, E3 and B1, B2, B3, fixing E1 to remove rotational duplication, and using diagrams to expose symmetry (NRICH, “Amicable Arrangements”).
For that specific six-person exercise, the probability that all three elf–best-friend pairs are adjacent is 2/15. It is a result for the stated puzzle, not a general probability about seating riddles or about how effective a solving method is. To work it manually, fix E1, place its friend in either neighboring seat, and then test the remaining pairings while rejecting cases that leave an elf without an adjacent best friend.
Labeling is more than cosmetic. Names that look similar or long relationship descriptions create transcription errors; compact labels let you mark a pair, rotate the circle, and compare cases without losing track of identities.

How to diagnose a contradiction
A required pair has no adjacent seats
Undo the most recent speculative placement and inspect whether an unconstrained guest occupied one of the two spaces reserved for the pair. If so, reopen that space and branch on the pair’s orientation before placing the unconstrained guest.
Two people are forced into one seat
This usually means an “opposite” or “one person between” relationship was counted from the wrong anchor. Recount seat steps in both directions and confirm that your clockwise arrow has not changed.
The last placement breaks a clue you thought was satisfied
Run the clue list from the beginning rather than checking only the newest clue. A negative adjacency or window rule may have been forgotten earlier. Cross out the failed branch and retain the last diagram that satisfied all confirmed constraints.
Two diagrams look different but are actually the same
Rotate one diagram until the anchor person occupies the same reference seat. If every neighbor relationship then matches, discard the duplicate. If the order reverses, compare left/right clues before deciding whether it is a distinct mirror case.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No arrangement survives
Check interpretation before declaring the puzzle impossible. “One person between” means a two-seat separation, “opposite” requires a compatible table size, and “next to” includes the wraparound edge. Also verify whether “nearest” means one specific seat or either of two equally near seats.
A compact algorithm you can reuse
- Count the people and draw exactly that many seats.
- Mark the table’s physical features and choose a clockwise direction.
- Rewrite every sentence as an adjacency, non-adjacency, opposite, distance, direction, or feature constraint.
- Anchor a forced feature seat; otherwise fix one named person to eliminate rotations.
- Place the person or pair with the fewest legal positions.
- After every placement, update forbidden seats and protect spaces needed by required neighbors.
- When two positions remain, create separate labeled cases rather than guessing.
- Reject a case at the first contradiction, and do not explore rotations of the same case.
- For each completed case, inspect every clue, including the last-to-first edge and all environmental markers.
- Report one arrangement only if the clues force one; otherwise list the surviving distinct arrangements and explain the symmetry rule used.
Final verification checklist
- Does every person appear exactly once?
- Are the first and last names treated as adjacent?
- Does every fixed-seat or table-feature clue match the drawing?
- Are all required neighbors actually touching?
- Are all forbidden neighbors separated?
- Are opposite and “one person between” distances counted correctly?
- Are left/right statements read using the same direction arrow throughout?
- Have duplicate rotations been removed?
- If two mirror images remain, has the wording said whether they count separately?
- Have you checked the original clue list line by line instead of relying on visual plausibility?
A finished circle is an answer only after this audit. The diagram supplies the structure; the written constraint list supplies the proof.
