How to Soft Reset a Project Zomboid Server Without Wiping the Map

A soft reset refreshes Project Zomboid server and player identity state while aiming to preserve the world. Follow a clean-stop backup workflow, use only build-specific controls, and keep full wipes separate from soft resets.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Project Zomboid soft reset is intended to refresh server and player identity state while keeping the existing world data. It is not the same as deleting the Zomboid/Saves directory. Stop the server cleanly, back up the entire Zomboid data set, apply the reset control supported by your exact build or hosting panel, then test with one administrator before allowing everyone back in.

Players may have to create new characters after the reset. The example server profile documents ResetID as the value that indicates whether a soft reset has occurred and lists ServerPlayerID separately; when the server and client values no longer match, the client must create a new character.

What a soft reset changes

A soft reset addresses server-state identity rather than map generation. Project Zomboid’s example servertest.ini profile includes a ResetID entry and a separate ServerPlayerID entry. Those values let the server and clients determine whether they are still part of the same server state. If the identifiers no longer match after a reset, an existing client is prompted to create a new character.

The intended result is that the existing world remains available while player/server identity state is refreshed. “Intended” matters: reset behavior is build- and wrapper-dependent, so verify the result on the exact Build 41 or Build 42 branch, server package, container image, or control panel you use. A soft reset is therefore not a promise that every object, mod state, or player file will be untouched.

  • World data: Intended to remain in place; confirm this with a test connection before reopening the server.
  • Player identities: Existing clients may need new characters when reset IDs no longer match.
  • Configuration: The profile and its settings remain unless you edit or replace them.
  • Reversibility: Recovery depends on having a complete, known-good backup taken while the server was stopped.

Do not confuse a soft reset with deleting the save directory. Deleting Zomboid/Saves is a destructive full wipe that causes a new map to be generated at the next launch.

When to use a soft reset

Use this operation when you want to refresh the server’s identity relationship with clients, resolve a reset-related state problem, or begin a new character cycle while retaining the group’s explored map, buildings, loot changes, and other world history. It is appropriate only when preserving the current world is more important than preserving every existing character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use it as a general repair button for a corrupted save, a failed mod update, or a networking problem. First identify whether the problem is actually identity-related. A player who cannot connect because of a mismatched build, missing workshop item, wrong port, or an offline server does not need a reset. Fix that underlying issue instead.

Prepare safely before resetting

1. Identify the exact server and profile

Write down the game build string, server package or container image, active profile name, installation method, and hosting environment. A Steam-installed dedicated server, a Docker image, and a host-panel deployment can expose different reset controls and startup syntax. A panel may also start a profile other than the one you expect.

On Windows, the Project Zomboid Wiki dedicated-server guide places server profiles under C:Users<you>ZomboidServer. The default profile is commonly named servertest, with its settings in servertest.ini, but use the profile name shown by your launch command or panel rather than assuming it. Linux, container, and managed-host paths can differ, so record the actual path displayed by that environment.

Record the server’s advertised name and address as well. This prevents you from testing a different instance that happens to use the same profile name. If more than one server runs on the machine, note the service name, container name, and mapped ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Announce maintenance and stop cleanly

Tell players when the server will be unavailable and ask them to log out in a safe location. Stop the dedicated server through its normal shutdown command or panel action and wait for the process to exit. The current dedicated-server guidance specifically recommends a clean exit before copying or editing files. Never copy, delete, or edit a live world while the server is writing to it.

Check the console or service manager for a completed shutdown rather than relying only on a closed terminal window. If the process remains alive, stop it using the host’s documented method and allow file writes to finish. A backup made during an active save can contain incomplete map or player data and may not be usable for rollback.

3. Make a restorable backup

Copy the complete Zomboid user folder to storage separate from the live server. At minimum, preserve the active multiplayer save directory, the active server profile, and the profile file you will edit. Make an additional copy of servertest.ini under a dated name before changing it, for example servertest.ini.before-soft-reset-2026-10-15.

A useful backup should let you restore both the map and the settings, not merely recover a single player file. Keep the original folder untouched, record the backup location, and check that the copied files can actually be opened. If your host panel offers snapshots, create one in addition to downloading a local copy; a panel snapshot is not a substitute for knowing which profile and save path it contains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve timestamps and directory structure when copying. Do not compress only the files that look important while omitting the profile, server database, or multiplayer save subdirectories. If you have enough storage, keep one untouched archive and a second working copy for inspection.

4. Record mod and workshop state

Save a copy of the profile’s Mods and WorkshopItems values. They are separate settings in the example profile and both must remain aligned with what clients use. A reset is a poor time to change a mod list: first perform the reset with the same content, then make mod changes in a separate maintenance window.

Write down the versions or collection identifiers used by the server and note any server-side scripts or map mods. If a reset test fails after a mod change, you will not know whether identity handling or content loading caused the failure. Keeping the pre-reset lists gives you a controlled comparison.

Apply the soft reset

Use only the control documented for your exact installation. There is no single reset command established as safe for every current distribution, so do not paste an unverified -Dsoftreset option into a launch script.

  1. Confirm the server is stopped. Check the process list or panel status, and verify that no backup or map files are still being written.
  2. Confirm the active profile and save path. Match the profile name in the launch configuration with the folder you backed up. If a panel displays a profile selector, record that selection.
  3. Preserve the original configuration. Copy the active .ini file before editing. Do not rename the live profile unless the hosting documentation requires it.
  4. Enable the documented soft-reset control. In a managed panel, this may be a checkbox or a one-time reset action. In a container wrapper, set the wrapper’s documented variable for one startup only. The meshi-team Docker reference exposes SOFTRESET, with 0 meaning false and 1 meaning true; that variable belongs to that wrapper and does not prove that a Steam installation or another image accepts the same setting.
  5. Start the server and wait for a clean startup. Watch the console or panel log until the normal ready state appears. Do not connect while the map is still loading, and do not stop the process merely because startup appears slow.
  6. Test with one administrator or disposable test account. Connect using a client on the same game build. Confirm that the expected world is present and observe whether the client is asked to create a new character. Check a known location, container, and a small area of the map before inviting the rest of the players.
  7. Disable a one-shot control after success. If you enabled a panel toggle or set SOFTRESET=1, return it to its normal disabled value so an ordinary restart does not repeat the operation. Keep the pre-reset backup until all players have verified their access.

If the server starts with the old character state, do not immediately repeat the reset. Stop it, confirm the profile and save directory, and inspect the wrapper or panel documentation for how it records a one-time reset. Repeating an uncertain operation can make diagnosis and rollback harder.

What to verify during the first test

Use a short, repeatable inspection rather than asking every player to join at once. Confirm that the server name and address are correct, the expected map landmarks are present, and a known building or container still contains the expected world state. Check that the administrator can move, save, disconnect, and reconnect without the server generating another character unexpectedly.

Then test the identity result deliberately. A client that receives a new-character prompt may be behaving as designed when reset identifiers differ. Do not create replacement characters for the whole community until you have established that the map is the intended one and that the reset was applied to the correct profile. If the test account is disposable, record its result in the maintenance notes.

Soft reset versus a full map wipe

Operation Map and world Player identities Configuration and recovery Risk
Soft reset Intended to preserve existing world data; verify on the exact build and wrapper. Clients may need new characters when reset identifiers no longer match. Profile normally remains; restoration is possible if the complete stopped-server backup is intact. Moderate. An incorrect profile or unsupported control can produce an unexpected result.
Full wipe The server’s Saves folder is deleted and a new map is generated on restart. New player state is expected. Destructive unless the old save and profile are restored from backup. High. Map progress, buildings, loot changes, and other world history are lost from the live copy.

Choose a soft reset when the goal is to refresh identity state without intentionally regenerating the map. Choose a full wipe only when the group has agreed to start a new world or a corrupted save cannot be repaired another way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical differences are easy to summarize: a soft reset is an identity operation with a preservation goal; a full wipe is a save deletion and map-generation operation. The first can often be undone from a stopped-server backup. The second cannot be undone unless that backup contains the old save and you restore it correctly.

What a documented full wipe looks like

A Steam-community support reply by Project Zomboid officer Beard, dated 22 March 2021, describes a full reset—not a soft reset—as follows: “To fully reset it, you have to manually delete the "Saves" folder in the servers "Zomboid" folder to delete the map, then change the ServerID and PlayerID in the servertest.ini (so players will have new characters on the server).”

That procedure is useful for understanding the difference between operations, but it is not a guarantee that current Build 42 panels, containers, or server packages use the same names or sequence. If you deliberately need a new map:

  1. Stop the server cleanly and make a complete backup of the current Zomboid folder.
  2. Verify that the backup contains the active profile and the relevant Saves directory.
  3. Follow the full-wipe instructions for your exact build or host. Do not delete a directory merely because its name looks similar.
  4. Change the identity values only where the current instructions specify, then launch and wait for a new world to initialize.
  5. Test the new map with an administrator before restoring mods or inviting players.

Never present deletion of Zomboid/Saves as a soft-reset step. If there is any doubt about the intended outcome, stop and restore the backup rather than experimenting on the only copy of the world.

Profile files, ports, and settings to recognize

The example servertest.ini includes DefaultPort=16261, documents ResetID, and lists ServerPlayerID separately. These entries help you identify the profile you are editing, but changing a network port is not a reset method.

The dedicated-server guide describes UDP port 16261 and the adjacent game port 16262 as the default networking set, with 8766 used depending on the Steam networking path. Those are connection details. Leave them unchanged during a reset unless you are separately troubleshooting connectivity.

A Docker configuration reference identifies Steam dedicated-server app ID 380870 and the wrapper variable SOFTRESET (default 0). Treat both as wrapper-specific facts. A different image, host panel, or native installation can use another variable, a button, or no exposed toggle at all.

Do not infer that a port number, app ID, or profile filename tells you which reset syntax to use. These values help identify the installation and its network path; the host’s current instructions determine how a one-time reset is requested.

Troubleshooting after the reset

The old world or old characters are still present

  • Confirm that the server loaded the profile you edited, not another profile with a similar name.
  • Compare the active save path with the path in your backup and launch configuration.
  • Check whether the panel applied a one-time reset flag or silently reverted it after startup.
  • Verify that the client and server build strings match before drawing conclusions from a failed test.

Do not delete additional folders to force a result. Stop the server and take a fresh copy of the current state before investigating further. A second backup gives you a clear point-in-time record if you need support from the host or game community.

Players cannot join

Wait for the server’s normal ready message and test with one administrator first. Then verify that every client is on the same build branch and that the server’s address and configured ports are unchanged. If the reset also involved a mod update, restore the pre-reset Mods and WorkshopItems values before diagnosing networking.

UDP 16261 and 16262 are common defaults, while 8766 may be involved through the Steam networking path. Do not change these values simply because a reset was performed; change them only as part of a separate, documented connectivity fix.

Players connect but are asked to make characters unexpectedly

This can be the expected identity result of a soft reset when the client’s stored identifiers no longer match the server’s ResetID and ServerPlayerID state. Have the player create a new character only after confirming that the intended world is present. If preserving old characters was the actual goal, stop before anyone overwrites important data and restore the pre-reset backup for a new plan.

Mods or workshop content fails to load

Compare the server profile’s Mods and WorkshopItems entries with the known-good backup. They are separate lists; matching one does not prove the other is correct. Keep the same mod versions during the reset and resolve workshop downloads or load-order problems independently.

The map appears missing or newly generated

Stop immediately. A newly generated map indicates that the operation behaved like a wipe or that the server pointed at a different save directory. Do not continue playing on that instance. Preserve the new files for diagnosis, then restore the backed-up profile and save directory only after confirming the server is stopped.

The server repeatedly resets on every restart

Check for a panel toggle, environment variable, or startup option that remains enabled. In the meshi-team Docker reference, SOFTRESET=1 enables the wrapper’s reset behavior and 0 disables it. Return a one-shot setting to its disabled value after the first successful startup and restart only after confirming the change was saved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollback and recovery

Rollback is safest when performed as a complete, stopped-server restore:

  1. Announce that the test result is being discarded and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Move the post-reset profile and save directories to a dated quarantine folder instead of deleting them.
  3. Restore the backed-up active profile and multiplayer save data to the exact paths used before the reset.
  4. Restore the original servertest.ini (or the equivalent profile file) and its recorded Mods and WorkshopItems values.
  5. Remove or disable the one-shot reset setting in the panel, wrapper, or startup environment.
  6. Start the server, wait for readiness, and test with one administrator before reopening it.

Keep both the original backup and the quarantined post-reset files until the server has been stable and the community has confirmed that the expected world and character state are back. Do not merge files from the two states unless the exact host documentation explains which files are safe to combine.

Checklist for a low-risk reset

  • Build branch, server package, profile name, and host environment recorded.
  • Maintenance window announced and all players logged out safely.
  • Server stopped with a clean exit.
  • Complete Zomboid folder backed up, including saves and profile.
  • Original servertest.ini copied before editing.
  • Mods and WorkshopItems values recorded.
  • Exact-build reset control identified; no unverified universal command used.
  • Reset applied once, then disabled after startup.
  • Administrator test confirms the intended world and character behavior.
  • Backup retained until normal play is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a soft reset delete the Project Zomboid map?

It is intended to preserve the existing world data. Deleting Zomboid/Saves, by contrast, is the documented destructive full-wipe pattern that generates a new map. Confirm the result with an administrator before reopening the server.

Will players keep their characters after a soft reset?

Not necessarily. When the server’s ResetID and ServerPlayerID state no longer matches a client, that client may be required to create a new character. Verify the world first and keep a backup if preserving old characters matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I back up before resetting?

Back up the complete Zomboid user folder while the server is stopped, including the active multiplayer save directory, server profile, and configuration file. Make a dated copy of servertest.ini and record the Mods and WorkshopItems values.

Is there one universal soft-reset command?

No universal syntax is established for every current installation. A managed panel may provide a button, while a Docker wrapper may expose SOFTRESET. Follow the instructions for the exact build, image, or host and avoid unverified -Dsoftreset options.

Why did my reset affect nothing?

The server may have loaded a different profile or save directory, the control may not be supported by that installation, or the one-time flag may not have been applied. Stop the server, compare the launch configuration with the backed-up paths, and inspect the host documentation before trying again.

Why can’t players join after the reset?

Wait for the normal ready message, confirm that client and server build strings match, and check the unchanged server address and ports. Also compare the server’s Mods and WorkshopItems lists with the known-good backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do ports 16261, 16262, and 8766 have to do with resetting?

They are networking details, not reset commands. UDP 16261 and 16262 are common defaults, while 8766 can be used depending on the Steam networking path. Leave them alone during a reset unless you are separately fixing connectivity.

Can I undo a soft reset?

Usually you can restore the pre-reset state if you made a complete backup while the server was stopped. Quarantine the post-reset files, restore the original profile and saves to the exact paths, disable the one-shot reset control, and test with one administrator.

The Bottom Line

A safe Project Zomboid soft reset is a controlled, build-specific identity reset—not a deletion of Zomboid/Saves. Stop cleanly, back up the complete data set, verify the active profile, apply the documented control once, test the world and character behavior, then disable the control and retain the backup.
