To slow down a video, lower the selected clip’s playback speed in your editor; to slow only one moment, use time remapping or a speed curve. The result’s smoothness depends on the source footage and how the editor handles frames that do not align with the output timeline. Preview the slowed section, choose an interpolation method if available, and inspect the exported file.
Choose between slowing a whole clip and slowing one moment
A constant speed adjustment applies one rate to the selected clip. Use it when you want the entire shot to play more slowly. Time remapping, also called speed ramping in some editors, lets you vary the rate within a clip—for example, easing into a slow section and then returning to normal speed.

- Import and place the clip. Add your footage to the project timeline, then decide whether to slow the full clip or a particular action.
- Set a constant speed for the whole clip. Select the clip and open the app’s speed or duration control. In Adobe Premiere, use Speed/Duration to set a rate, or use Rate Stretch to change duration. In CapCut, lower the speed slider; its official guide gives 0.5x as an example. Labels and controls can vary by app version and platform.
- Use keyframes for a selected moment. In Premiere, Time Remapping uses speed keyframes to change the rate at different points in a clip. Set the beginning and end of the slow section, adjust the rate between them, and preview the transition. Other editors may offer a speed curve for the same general purpose. - Preview the motion. Watch the slowed action and the points where speed changes. Check that the action remains understandable and that the transition into and out of slow motion feels intentional.
- Export and review. Choose the intended output resolution and frame rate, export, then watch the rendered file. A timeline preview may not represent the final result exactly.
Why slowed video can look choppy
Slowing playback stretches the source footage over more time. If the output timeline needs frames that the original clip does not contain, the editor must decide how to fill the gaps. Low-frame-rate footage can look uneven when slowed heavily; reducing the speed does not create additional genuine moments of motion. CapCut’s slow-motion guidance also cautions that excessive slowing of low-frame-rate video can look choppy or pixelated.

Some footage is harder to interpolate convincingly than other footage. Fast movement, motion blur, and objects passing in front of one another can reveal generated-frame errors. Treat smoother playback as something to evaluate on the actual shot, not as a guaranteed outcome of a particular setting.
Compare frame interpolation methods on the shot
Editors may offer these methods for adjusting clip speed. Premiere documents Frame Sampling, Frame Blending, and Optical Flow. The best-looking option can depend on the footage, so compare the available choices in the section you plan to use.

- Frame Sampling: Uses source frames without blending or generating intermediate motion. Inspect for uneven or repeated-looking movement.
- Frame Blending: Blends frames to produce intermediate transitions. Look for ghosted or doubled edges.
- Optical Flow: Estimates motion to create intermediate frames. It can appear smoother, but complex motion or occlusion may produce warping or other artifacts.
Premiere’s Speed/Duration documentation also describes interpolation choices for speed-adjusted clips. If a method creates distracting artifacts, try another or use a less extreme speed change.
Check export settings before sharing
Confirm the export frame rate and resolution match your intended delivery. Export controls vary among editors and platforms; CapCut’s speed changer documentation describes exporting with selected parameters such as resolution and frame rate. Review the rendered file at normal playback speed, paying particular attention to the slow section and any speed changes. This helps catch stutter or interpolation artifacts that were hard to notice in the editing preview.
