There is no defensible one-size-fits-all generator rating for a liquid-cooled data center. Size the system from the outage operating case: the IT load that must remain online, the UPS and its recovery behavior, every pump and cooling device required to hold server temperatures, the electrical characteristics of those loads, the allowable voltage and frequency transients, and the redundancy or maintenance case the facility must survive. The result is a project-specific engine-kilowatt and alternator-kVA requirement, validated with manufacturer studies and integrated commissioning.
Why liquid cooling changes the generator calculation
Liquid-cooled servers do not eliminate facility cooling loads; they change where those loads appear. A direct-to-chip installation normally adds coolant distribution units (CDUs), primary and secondary pumps, controls, valves, heat exchangers and heat-rejection equipment. Chillers, dry coolers or cooling towers may still be required, and residual air cooling can remain for memory, storage, networking and other heat sources. A hybrid deployment must therefore be scheduled as a hybrid system rather than treated as an all-liquid design.

The CDU is a core electrical and resilience component. It may contain pumps, controls and instrumentation that are just as important to thermal safety as the server power supply. A generator sized only from IT nameplate kilowatts can leave the servers powered but outside their permitted coolant temperature or flow range.

Thermal inertia can help during the changeover. ASHRAE’s Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities notes that residual liquid in header pipes can often maintain critical cooling until generators start, with full cooling restored by adding small supplemental pumps on UPS backup. That is a design option, not an assumption: the stored volume, allowable temperature rise, pipe layout, pump controls and ride-through time must be demonstrated for the actual installation.

As contextual thermal information, an October 2026 Uptime Institute commissioning article says cold-plate systems capture about 70–95% of IT heat output, varying by cold-plate and server design. That range describes heat capture, not a generator-sizing multiplier.
1. Define the outage case before choosing a rating
Write the operating scenario in measurable terms. A generator that is adequate for a short utility interruption may be inadequate for a maintenance event, a failed generator module or a fuel-delivery delay.
Specify the service objective
- Identify the utility-failure event: instantaneous loss, brownout followed by transfer, or a planned maintenance outage.
- State the IT capacity that must remain online: the full installed load, a contracted critical load, or a reduced load after automated shedding.
- Set the maximum ride-through interval before generator power is available and the permitted temperature, flow, voltage and frequency excursions during that interval.
- Define the required fuel autonomy, refueling method and replenishment time.
- List the failure and maintenance cases: loss of one generator, one switchboard, one UPS module, one CDU, one pump, or a complete power path.
Power and cooling redundancy are separate decisions. An N, N+1 or 2N power architecture does not automatically provide the same protection for CDUs, pumps or heat rejection. Document the target for each path and test normal, failure and maintenance states.
Separate normal, degraded and recovery loads
Create at least three load states: the steady outage state, the highest credible degraded state, and the recovery state while UPS batteries recharge and equipment restarts. If the design uses load shedding, record which loads are shed, the trigger, the resulting IT capacity and the sequence for restoring them.
2. Build a complete electrical and mechanical load schedule
Start with an equipment-level schedule, not a single IT total. Record manufacturer data and the operating condition represented by each line.
| Load group | Include in the schedule | Data to record |
|---|---|---|
| IT and UPS | Server racks, network equipment, storage, UPS input, bypass equipment and battery chargers | Running kW and kVA, power factor, harmonic current, crest factor, minimum and maximum loading, transfer behavior and recharge/recovery demand |
| CDUs | Each CDU, its controller, heat exchanger and internal pumps | Rated and actual kW/kVA, starting method, minimum flow, alarms and whether units are shared or dedicated |
| Distribution pumps | Primary, secondary, header and supplemental UPS-backed pumps | Motor horsepower, inrush or VFD profile, required flow, start permissives and lead/lag logic |
| Heat rejection | Chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers, condenser pumps, fans and fluid-treatment systems | Compressor or fan starting current, staged-start logic, seasonal operating point and control power |
| Residual air cooling | Computer-room air handlers, in-row units, fan walls and ventilation needed by non-liquid components | Fan motor data, VFD behavior, minimum airflow and any simultaneous-start condition |
| Controls and auxiliaries | Building-management systems, valves, sensors, networked controllers, lighting and life-safety systems that are on the emergency bus | Steady load, startup priority and ride-through source |
Include the UPS input rather than adding only the downstream IT nameplate. The generator sees the UPS rectifier, its power factor and harmonics, and later may see battery recharge or recovery current. Obtain measured or manufacturer-certified values for the intended operating range.

Do not assume the liquid loop carries all the heat
Inventory air-cooled memory, storage, power-conversion components and network hardware. List any fans that remain necessary after direct-to-chip cooling is commissioned. If the facility can operate in a reduced liquid-cooling mode, document the resulting flow and heat-rejection requirements rather than applying a blanket percentage reduction.

For every scheduled load, capture both steady-state and transient data:
- Running kW and kVA at the expected outage operating point.
- Power factor, including leading or lagging behavior where relevant.
- Harmonic and nonlinear current from UPS rectifiers, variable-frequency drives and switch-mode supplies.
- Motor starting current, acceleration time and whether a soft starter or VFD limits the inrush.
- Voltage, phase, frequency and grounding requirements.
- Whether the load starts immediately, enters in a controlled walk-in, steps on after a delay, or remains shed.
- Minimum and maximum operating values across the permitted temperature and altitude range.
Cummins’ Generator Set Application Manual, Chapter 3: Sizing states: “A generator set is a limited power source both in terms of engine power (kW) and generator volt-amperes (kVA), regardless of the type of excitation system.” Treat those as two independent constraints. A design can have enough engine horsepower for its real-power total but still exceed alternator current or voltage-distortion limits.
4. Calculate steady kW and kVA without hiding the assumptions
Sum the coincident real power for each defined operating state, then calculate apparent power from the actual power factors and phase relationships. Do not simply add nameplate kVA if the loads are noncoincident, and do not convert a kW total with an arbitrary assumed power factor when manufacturer data is available.
For a first engineering model, create separate columns for connected load, expected running load, starting or step load, and the load that is intentionally shed. Mark each value as measured, manufacturer-certified or an engineering assumption. The generator rating must cover the worst required state at the site’s voltage and frequency, after applying the manufacturer’s derating rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEngine kW versus alternator kVA
Engine output limits sustained real power and acceleration capability. Alternator kVA limits current and its ability to hold voltage under nonlinear or motor loads. The selected set must satisfy both at the same time, including the required power factor, harmonic profile and ambient conditions. A larger kVA alternator paired with an engine that cannot supply the needed kW does not solve an engine limitation, and a high-kW engine with an undersized alternator does not solve a current limitation.

5. Model the transfer sequence and transient response
Transient performance often determines the practical rating. Build a time-ordered sequence that starts with utility failure and ends with stable operation and UPS recovery.
- Utility loss detection: record breaker delays, generator start time and any controls that remain on UPS power.
- Generator start and voltage build: verify the time to rated voltage and frequency under the specified ambient conditions.
- Emergency-bus transfer: model the UPS transfer, bypass state and the largest first load.
- UPS walk-in: determine whether the rectifier ramps input current gradually or presents a step. Cummins data-center guidance recommends defining this behavior rather than oversizing blindly for full-load acceptance.
- Cooling restoration: sequence CDUs, pumps, valves, chillers and heat-rejection equipment according to their permissives and minimum-flow requirements.
- Load restoration: add remaining IT and auxiliary loads in controlled blocks, with shedding available if voltage or frequency approaches a limit.
- Battery recharge: include the UPS recharge or recovery demand and confirm that it does not coincide with an avoidable cooling or motor-start peak.
Set numerical acceptance limits for voltage dip, frequency dip, recovery time, steady-state regulation and harmonic distortion. Use the tolerances of the UPS, pumps, drives, CDUs and IT equipment, plus the facility’s contractual or regulatory criteria. A generic “20% margin” cannot replace this analysis.
6. Decide which pumps and CDUs belong on generator power or UPS power
Critical cooling equipment normally needs generator-backed power for the duration of the outage. The question is whether some controls or pumps also need battery-backed power during the generator-start interval.
When UPS-backed pumps are useful
If header volume and coolant thermal mass can keep cold plates within limits for the start interval, a small supplemental pump on the UPS can preserve circulation until the generator bus is stable. This can reduce the battery-backed power requirement compared with placing every full-size pump on the UPS. It also introduces dependencies: the pump must have compatible controls, adequate battery autonomy and a verified handoff to the generator-fed pump train.
When full pump continuity is required
Use continuous UPS support or another designed ride-through method when the allowable temperature rise is shorter than generator start time, when the loop has little stored volume, or when a pump stoppage causes an immediate server protection trip. Validate flow, differential pressure and control-state behavior during transfer; “the servers are on UPS” is not evidence that coolant circulation is.
CDU redundancy choices
Uptime Institute reports common use of N+1 CDUs where redundancy is required. Vertiv explains that row-level N+1 requires an additional CDU. Check the actual failure case: a shared CDU may protect several rows but create a larger common-mode exposure, while dedicated CDUs may require more floor space, controls and generator capacity. Specify the number, rating and electrical source of each unit, then test loss of the duty unit and loss of its associated power path.

7. Select the generator duty rating and site configuration
Choose the rating category that matches the operating requirement: standby, prime, continuous or a data-center-continuous classification where offered. These categories have different allowable loading, runtime and maintenance assumptions; they are not interchangeable labels.
Confirm all site and installation constraints before accepting a catalog rating:
- Altitude, maximum and minimum ambient temperature, humidity and cooling-air restrictions.
- Radiator or remote heat-rejection arrangement, including the effect of elevated coolant temperatures.
- Fuel type, tank capacity, fuel quality, autonomy and replenishment logistics.
- Emissions limits, permitting, acoustic requirements and local operating-hour restrictions.
- Voltage, frequency, phase configuration, short-circuit contribution and paralleling controls.
- Switchgear, transfer switches, protective coordination, neutral/grounding scheme and physical access for maintenance.
- Footprint, exhaust routing, service clearances and weather protection.
As a manufacturer-specific example, Cummins lists QSK50 data-center-continuous configurations from 1,020 to 1,365 kW and 1,275 to 1,706 kVA, depending on configuration, on its current product information accessed in 2026. Those figures illustrate that one engine family can have several ratings; they are not a recommendation or a universal data-center size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Account for redundancy in the generator plant
Apply the outage and maintenance cases to the generator arrangement itself. For an N design, the remaining set must carry the required load after the defined failure. For N+1, remove one set and repeat the full sequence, including the largest motor start and UPS recovery. For 2N, analyze each independent path for isolation, cross-connect operation and the possibility that controls or cooling auxiliaries create a hidden common dependency.
Check more than nameplate capacity. A plant may have enough aggregate kW while a single switchboard, fuel day tank, radiator, synchronization controller or CDU feed remains a single point of failure. Maintenance bypasses and test modes must preserve the specified cooling and power state.
9. Use an engineering study, then validate it in commissioning
Feed the complete load schedule and sequence into the generator manufacturer’s sizing software or an independent electrical study. The model should include alternator excitation response, engine acceleration, motor-start curves, UPS rectifier behavior, harmonics, load blocks, derating and the required failure case. Request the assumptions and pass/fail criteria with the study so the result can be reviewed against the one-line diagram and controls narrative.
Best Value
Commission the combined power-and-cooling sequence, not just an unloaded generator start. Test utility loss, transfer, staged pump and CDU starts, UPS walk-in, load shedding, battery recharge, restoration and return to utility. Repeat the required generator, UPS, CDU and pump failure cases where the availability objective demands it.
Uptime Institute describes liquid-cooled load banks and rack emulators as a way to emulate liquid-cooled IT during integrated system tests. This is an emerging commissioning technique; it supplements, rather than replaces, project-specific design review and equipment protection checks. The test should reproduce the coolant flow, heat rejection and control interactions that a resistive electrical load alone cannot represent.
10. Compare generator and liquid-cooling options on the criteria that matter
There is no universal winning architecture. Use a decision matrix tied to the facility’s operating and resilience objectives.

| Fuel and permitting | Does the plant meet autonomy, replenishment, emissions, noise and runtime requirements? |
| Cooling installation | Can the radiator, remote heat rejection and generator room cooling operate at site conditions? |

| Liquid-loop arrangement | Are CDUs shared or dedicated, and how do their pumps, controls and heat-rejection interfaces behave under failure? |
Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them
Using IT nameplate kW as the generator size
Symptom: the generator carries the servers on paper but trips or permits coolant alarms during startup. Correction: add UPS input, CDUs, pumps, heat rejection, controls and residual air cooling, then model their sequence.
Applying an arbitrary percentage uplift
Symptom: a large “margin” still fails a motor-start or UPS-transfer test. Correction: replace the percentage with measured load steps, motor curves, UPS walk-in behavior and explicit acceptance limits.
Checking kW but not kVA and harmonics
Symptom: engine capacity appears adequate while alternator current, voltage distortion or heating is excessive. Correction: obtain power-factor and harmonic data for every nonlinear load and verify alternator limits.
Assuming one redundancy label covers everything
Symptom: an N+1 generator plant still loses cooling when one CDU or pump fails. Correction: document independent power and cooling failure cases and test the controls and physical paths.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring recharge and recovery
Symptom: the initial transfer succeeds but voltage sags when UPS batteries recharge or shed loads return. Correction: include recovery current and restoration blocks in the worst-case sequence.
Relying on a resistive load-bank test alone
Symptom: the generator passes a steady electrical test but fails with real pumps, drives or liquid-cooling controls. Correction: use representative motor, UPS and liquid-loop emulation, followed by integrated testing with the actual control logic.
