Measure the room’s length and width, multiply them to get its area, then match that area to an air purifier’s recommended room size and clean air delivery rate (CADR). For small particles such as PM2.5, compare the tobacco-smoke CADR. Open floor plans and ceilings higher than eight feet may call for more capacity than a room-area label suggests.
Measure the space the purifier needs to serve
Measure the room’s length and width in feet, then multiply them. A 12-foot by 15-foot room is 180 square feet. If the purifier is expected to clean an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, include the connected area it must serve rather than measuring only one zone.

Room-area labels generally assume an eight-foot ceiling. If yours is taller, the room contains more air than the same floor area with an eight-foot ceiling; EPA advises choosing a purifier rated for a larger room. For a large or connected space, consider a higher-capacity unit or more than one purifier.

Match the room area to CADR
CADR, or clean air delivery rate, indicates how quickly an air cleaner supplies filtered air. Higher CADR generally supports a larger area. The EPA’s consumer guide provides this estimated minimum CADR chart for rooms with eight-foot ceilings:

| Room area | Estimated minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
These figures are estimates, not guarantees for every room or operating condition. They are based on tobacco-smoke particle removal and the eight-foot-ceiling assumption; consult the EPA consumer guide when interpreting a product’s room-size claim.
Choose the CADR for the pollutant you care about
Many labels show separate CADR values for smoke, dust, and pollen. EPA describes these ratings as representing small, medium, and large particles, respectively. For small particles such as PM2.5, use the smoke CADR when comparing units. CADR is typically measured at the purifier’s highest speed, so a lower everyday setting may deliver less clean air.

For wildfire smoke, EPA recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For a 180-square-foot room, that means at least 120 cfm smoke CADR (180 × 2/3). This is an application of EPA’s rule, not a separate EPA-published figure. See EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance for the recommendation and context.
Understand what the room-size rating means
The EPA’s 2018 technical summary explains that the ANSI/AHAM AC-1 room-size recommendation is based on an 80% reduction in steady-state particle concentration across three tested particle-size ranges. The estimate assumes clean-air flow equal to four to five times the test-room volume per hour. It does not mean all particles disappear, nor does it establish removal of every indoor pollutant. A unit used in a room larger than its rating may not achieve the intended reduction.

Particle CADR does not establish how well a purifier removes gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If gases are a concern, look for an activated-carbon or other absorbent filter designed for gas removal. EPA notes that no air cleaner or filter eliminates all pollutants in a home.

- Replace filters as directed: dirty or overloaded filters do not work well.
- Compare units using smoke CADR, stated room area, ceiling-height assumptions, and the test basis behind the label—not room size alone.
For wildfire smoke, EPA also discusses other room-cleaning options, including DIY box-fan air cleaners. Treat these as alternatives, not as equivalent tested products or as a substitute for checking the purifier’s stated performance.
