How to Size a Battery for a Co-Located Solar Project

There is no universal battery size for co-located solar. Learn how to model MW, usable MWh, duration, AC/DC coupling, clipping, interconnection limits, dispatch value, efficiency, degradation and lifetime cost.

There is no universal battery size for a co-located solar project. Select battery discharge and charge power in megawatts (MW) and usable energy in megawatt-hours (MWh) by modeling the plant’s export limit, solar-production profile, coupling architecture, dispatch rules, revenue or contract obligations, efficiency, degradation and lifetime cost. A four-hour battery is a useful benchmark for analysis, not a default design.

The practical method is to define the operating objective, model several MW/MWh combinations with time-series dispatch, compare AC- and DC-coupled layouts, then verify that the preferred case is allowed by the interconnection agreement, metering, market rules and equipment warranties.

What “battery size” means in a co-located project

Battery sizing has two independent dimensions. Power, measured in MW, is the maximum rate at which the battery can charge or discharge. Usable energy, measured in MWh, is the amount that can be delivered within the operating state-of-charge window. The relationship between them is duration:

A 50 MW battery with 200 MWh of usable energy is a four-hour system when operated at 50 MW. The same 200 MWh paired with 100 MW of power is a two-hour system. Duration changes the services the plant can provide; it is not a substitute for specifying both ratings.

Design quantity What it controls Questions to answer
Charge/discharge power (MW) How quickly surplus PV can be absorbed and how much output can be delivered at one time Can the battery capture the expected clipping window? Can it meet a contracted ramp, capacity or dispatch requirement?
Usable energy (MWh) How long the battery can sustain a chosen output before reaching its operating limit How many hours of evening delivery or other service are required after accounting for losses and reserve?
Duration (hours) The ratio of usable energy to usable power Does the selected duration match the timing of prices, solar surplus and contractual obligations?

Do not confuse usable ratings with nameplate ratings. A manufacturer’s nameplate energy or power can include capacity held outside the normal operating window, conversion losses, thermal limits or warranty reserves. Your dispatch model should use the deliverable MW and usable MWh available under the project’s temperature, state-of-charge and degradation assumptions.

Start with the project objective and hard boundaries

The economically optimal battery is the one that performs an allowed job at an acceptable lifetime cost. Write the objective and constraints before choosing a duration.

Define the value the battery must provide

  • Identify whether the primary purpose is shifting solar into higher-value hours, reducing output that would otherwise be curtailed, meeting a firm delivery profile, supplying contracted capacity or providing another grid service.
  • List every revenue stream or obligation that will be included in the financial model. A battery sized for an assumed service has little value if the project cannot qualify for that service.
  • State whether the battery may charge from the grid, only from co-located PV, or from either source. Charging permission changes both dispatch and the required energy balance.
  • Specify required availability, response time, minimum run time, reserve state of charge and limits on cycling.

Record interconnection and export limits

Enter the point-of-interconnection export cap, import allowance, metering arrangement and any limits on simultaneous PV and battery output. A shared inverter may cap the combined AC output even when the PV array and battery have larger DC ratings. Conversely, a battery can be physically large yet unable to discharge at its rated MW without violating the interconnection agreement.

Build the solar production basis

Use an hourly or finer-resolution PV production series for the actual site, array orientation, expected availability and inverter loading ratio. Include seasonal variation, outages and the expected degradation path. The battery’s clipping opportunity is determined by the shape of this production series, not by annual PV energy alone.

Choose the electrical architecture before finalizing ratings

Co-located storage can be AC-coupled or DC-coupled. The choice changes conversion losses, equipment count, controls, clipping capture and the way the plant interacts with its export limit.

AC-coupled configuration

In an AC-coupled plant, PV and battery systems generally use separate power-conversion equipment on the AC side. PV can serve the grid, while the battery can charge through its own inverter and discharge through that inverter. This arrangement can simplify independent operation and expansion, but PV energy sent through additional conversion stages incurs the losses represented in the model. The exact equipment and controls depend on the interconnection design.

DC-coupled configuration

In a DC-coupled plant, PV and the battery share a DC collection arrangement before conversion to AC. A DC-to-DC converter and controls route PV energy to the battery, while a shared inverter limits AC export. This can capture some PV energy that would otherwise be clipped when PV DC output exceeds the inverter’s AC rating, and it can avoid one conversion step for PV charging. It also introduces integration, protection, controls and operating complexity.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 Annual Technology Baseline explains the energy paths for PV sent directly to the grid, PV sent to the battery, battery discharge to the grid and grid charging, and describes why DC coupling can recover clipped energy: NREL’s 2024 utility-scale PV-plus-battery analysis. That analysis notes that clipping capture is small across most of the contiguous United States for its representative system, although a higher PV inverter loading ratio can increase the opportunity. Your site’s array and inverter ratings determine the actual result.

Decision axis AC coupling DC coupling
Clipped-PV capture Usually requires PV power to pass through the AC system before battery charging; capture depends on the configuration and available AC capacity. Can route DC energy that would exceed the shared inverter’s AC rating into the battery.
Conversion path Uses separate PV and battery conversion paths; losses depend on the selected equipment and dispatch path. Can reduce conversion steps for PV-to-battery charging, while adding DC-to-DC conversion and shared-inverter controls.
Equipment and controls Separate inverters can provide modularity, but add AC equipment and interconnection interfaces. Shared inverter and DC-to-DC converter can reduce some equipment, but require more integrated controls and protection.
Export constraint Battery and PV output are coordinated on the AC side to remain below the interconnection limit. The shared inverter directly constrains the combined DC-to-AC flow; stored energy can be dispatched later when inverter capacity is available.
Best choice Not universally superior; evaluate independent operation, layout, expansion and conversion costs for the site. Not universally superior; evaluate clipping value, integration risk, controls and converter costs for the site.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes potential co-location savings in site preparation, land acquisition, installation labor, permitting, interconnection and developer overhead, while also outlining AC- and DC-coupled arrangements: DOE’s Solar-Plus-Storage 101. These are cost categories to estimate, not guaranteed savings.

Use benchmarks correctly

The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ 2025 Annual Technology Baseline represents a utility-scale DC-coupled reference system with a 132 MWdc PV array, a 78 MWdc nameplate battery, 60 MWdc of usable battery power at four-hour duration and a shared 100 MWac inverter: the 2025 utility-scale PV-plus-battery reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reference item Published value How to use it
PV array 132 MWdc Illustrates the scale of a representative utility project; substitute your site’s PV rating.
Battery nameplate power 78 MWdc Shows that nameplate and usable ratings can differ.
Usable battery power 60 MWdc Represents deliverable power under the reference assumptions.
Duration Four hours A reference duration for technology and cost analysis, not a universal recommendation.
Shared inverter 100 MWac Demonstrates how a common conversion limit can constrain total AC output.

Applying the duration relationship to 60 MW of usable power gives 240 MWh of usable energy for a four-hour operating point. That arithmetic describes the stated duration and usable power; it does not establish that every project should install 240 MWh or use the same ratings. The 2025 source also notes uncertainty about future dominant architectures and component sizing.

Build a candidate-size matrix

Vary MW and usable MWh independently instead of selecting a duration first and multiplying by a single “typical” power rating. For each candidate, record:

  • Usable charge and discharge MW, nameplate ratings and duration.
  • Usable energy at commercial operation and at the end of the modeled life.
  • PV DC rating, inverter AC rating, PV inverter loading ratio and any shared-inverter limit.
  • Whether the battery is AC- or DC-coupled, where meters are located and which charging sources are permitted.
  • Reserve state of charge, minimum and maximum state of charge, ramp limits, minimum operating power and thermal derates.
  • Expected degradation, augmentation or replacement schedule, auxiliary consumption and round-trip efficiency.
  • Installed capital cost, fixed and variable operating costs, interconnection changes and control-system costs.

Keeping power and energy as separate variables reveals trade-offs that a fixed four-hour rule hides. A high-power, short-duration system may meet a narrow clipping window or a rapid response obligation. A lower-power, long-duration system may deliver through a long evening price period but fail to absorb a short, high-MW solar surplus.

Run time-series dispatch and economic analysis

Annual energy totals cannot determine the right battery size. Simulate the plant chronologically at hourly or finer resolution so the model can enforce state of charge, inverter limits and the timing of PV, prices and obligations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare time-series inputs. Import site PV output, market prices or contracted value signals, outage assumptions, ambient-temperature limits and the interconnection import/export cap.
  2. Represent every energy path. Model PV directly to the grid, PV to the battery, battery to the grid and, if allowed, grid-to-battery charging. For each path, apply the appropriate conversion and auxiliary losses.
  3. Enforce equipment limits. Limit charge and discharge power, shared-inverter throughput, state-of-charge range, ramp rate, minimum run time and simultaneous-flow rules. Prevent the model from exporting above the interconnection cap.
  4. Apply dispatch priorities. Define whether the battery first captures clipped PV, serves a contract, follows a price signal, preserves reserve or performs another service. State how conflicts are resolved.
  5. Track degradation and replacement. Reduce usable energy or power according to the adopted degradation curve, include augmentation or replacement dates, and apply warranty limits and cycle assumptions.
  6. Calculate lifetime results. Compare delivered MWh, curtailed or captured PV, revenue or avoided cost, operating cost, capital cost, replacement cost and financial metrics for every candidate.
  7. Check operational feasibility. Export dispatch schedules and peak flows for engineering review. A financially attractive schedule is not usable if the metering, interconnection or market rules prohibit it.

NREL and Southern Company describe an open-source model that compares AC- and DC-coupled configurations using costs, inverter performance, dispatch flexibility, forecast prices and clipped energy: the PV-plus-battery configuration and dispatch model. Its demonstrated test case reported approximately a 2% increase in internal rate of return or benefit/cost ratio for the DC-coupled case. That result belongs to that test case; it is not a general premium for DC coupling.

Account for efficiency and energy losses

Round-trip efficiency determines how much charging energy must be supplied to deliver a requested discharge. Charging source and conversion path matter. A related 2021 NREL reference scenario assumed 85% round-trip efficiency for grid charging and 87% for PV charging behind the inverter: NREL’s Representing DC-Coupled PV+Battery report. Those are scenario assumptions, not guaranteed specifications for a selected product.

Use the project’s warranted efficiency curve where available, and separate losses that occur in the PV inverter, DC-to-DC converter, battery, battery inverter, transformer and auxiliary systems. If the battery must deliver 100 MWh and the modeled round-trip efficiency is 85%, the charging energy requirement is not 100 MWh; the dispatch model must account for the loss on the complete charging and discharging path. Avoid applying one efficiency percentage to every operating mode when the architecture has distinct PV-charging and grid-charging paths.

Make interconnection and contracts part of the sizing decision

Before selecting the preferred candidate, obtain written confirmation of:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Maximum export and import at the point of interconnection.
  • Whether charging from the grid is permitted and how imports are metered and settled.
  • Whether stored PV energy retains any contractual or qualification status after charging.
  • Rules for simultaneous PV generation and battery discharge.
  • Telemetry, dispatch, response-time, testing and availability requirements.
  • Capacity accreditation, ancillary-service eligibility and any restrictions on cycling.
  • Warranty limits, augmentation obligations and operating-temperature requirements.

Public modeling tools can compare configurations and dispatch, but they cannot grant permission for a particular project. Interconnection studies, market tariffs, contracts and equipment warranties determine what the plant may actually do.

Illustrative sizing calculation

The following arithmetic shows how a dispatch result becomes an energy requirement; it is not a forecast for a particular site. Suppose a time-series model finds that the plant can usefully absorb 40 MW of otherwise curtailed PV for three hours. The gross energy opportunity is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

40 MW × 3 hours = 120 MWh

If the selected PV-charging path has an assumed 87% round-trip efficiency, the battery must be sized and dispatched with losses included; simply installing 120 MWh of usable energy would not return 120 MWh to the grid. If the project also requires 20 MW of evening delivery for four hours, that service requires 80 MWh of usable discharge energy before reserve and degradation allowances. The model must test whether one battery can satisfy both requirements on the same days, whether its charge power is sufficient during the clipping window and whether the shared inverter can export PV and battery output without exceeding the interconnection cap.

Common sizing mistakes and corrections

Copying a four-hour benchmark

Problem: Treating four hours as a universal rule because it appears in a reference case.

Correction: Use four hours as one candidate, then compare other MW/MWh combinations against the site’s dispatch profile, obligations and economics.

Choosing MWh without checking MW

Problem: Buying enough energy for an evening schedule but not enough inverter or battery power to meet the required output, or choosing high MW that cannot be charged within the available solar window.

Correction: Optimize charge power, discharge power and usable energy as separate variables and verify duration under actual limits.

Ignoring the shared inverter

Problem: Adding PV and battery nameplate output and assuming all of it can reach the grid.

Correction: Model the shared AC conversion limit, clipping, simultaneous flows and export cap at every time step.

Assuming DC coupling always wins

Problem: Turning a potential clipping benefit into a universal claim about economics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Quantify clipped energy at the site, then include DC-to-DC equipment, controls, integration, protection, maintenance and interconnection effects. The published 2% result is specific to one demonstrated case.

Using annual averages

Problem: Dividing annual PV energy by 8,760 hours and sizing from the resulting average.

Correction: Preserve the hourly or sub-hourly sequence so the model sees short clipping events, cloudy periods, price peaks and state-of-charge interactions.

Counting value the contract does not permit

Problem: Modeling grid charging, ancillary services or simultaneous export without confirming the tariff, contract and metering treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Obtain project-specific permission and encode the approved operating rules before relying on that revenue or qualification.

Final decision checklist

  • Objective, revenue streams and contractual services are documented.
  • PV production, inverter loading ratio, outages and degradation are represented at hourly or finer resolution.
  • Candidate battery MW and usable MWh values are varied independently.
  • AC- and DC-coupled designs are compared on clipping, conversion, equipment, controls, O&M, interconnection and dispatch flexibility.
  • Shared-inverter, export, import, state-of-charge, ramp and reserve limits are enforced.
  • Efficiency assumptions identify the charging source and conversion path; they are not presented as product guarantees.
  • Capital, operating, augmentation, replacement and degradation costs are included over the project life.
  • Interconnection, metering, market, warranty and operating permissions have been confirmed.
  • Sensitivity cases show how the preferred size changes with prices, solar output, efficiency, degradation, costs and operating rules.

When these checks are complete, the selected battery size is a project-specific result: a deliverable MW rating, a usable MWh rating and a coupling design that work together under the site’s physical and contractual limits. The benchmark configurations and published efficiencies provide reference points for the model, not a substitute for it.
