Use Cypress’s built-in cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB) command to simulate Tab, then query the expected next element and assert that it has focus. Start from a known focus target so the test checks a predictable part of your page’s keyboard navigation.
Press Tab and assert where focus moves
A minimal test focuses the first field, presses Tab, and checks that focus moved to the next field:

})cy.press() triggers native key events in the application. Cypress documents Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB as the Tab key value and recommends cy.press() for focus management and keyboard navigation. The command yields null, so make the focus assertion with a separate element query; do not chain the assertion directly onto cy.press(). See the Cypress cy.press() API.
Test a longer tab order or a focus trap
For a sequence of controls, repeat the press-and-assert pattern at each meaningful step. Explicitly checking each expected destination makes a failure identify which transition in the order is wrong.

})For a dialog or another region that intentionally traps focus, test the behavior your interface is designed to provide: for example, that focus enters the region, stays within it as expected, and can leave through the intended route. The correct destination depends on the application’s design; Cypress’s accessibility testing guide provides broader guidance for testing accessibility.
Use cy.press() for navigation, not text entry
Use cy.type() to enter text in an input and for its supported text-oriented special sequences. For navigation keys such as Tab, arrows, Enter, and Escape, use cy.press(). Cypress’s cy.type() API documentation specifically points to cy.press() for navigation keys, including Tab, particularly outside ordinary text input.

Check Cypress version compatibility
Cypress added cy.press() in version 14.3.0. Its September 3, 2025 announcement says version 15.1.0 expanded support for named keys and other characters. If the command or key constant is unavailable, check the installed Cypress version and its current API documentation; upgrade if the project’s compatibility requirements allow it. The version 15.1.0 announcement is available at Cypress’s release article.

Troubleshoot a Tab test that fails
- The next element does not have focus: Confirm the starting element was focused and that the expected next control matches the page’s actual keyboard order. Check for intervening focusable elements and intentional focus management.
- The assertion is chained to
cy.press():cy.press()yieldsnull. Query the destination element in a new Cypress command, as in the examples. cy.pressor the Tab constant is unavailable: Verify the project’s Cypress version; the command was added in 14.3.0.- You are using
.type('{tab}'): For keyboard navigation, usecy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)and then assert focus separately.
The Cypress plugin directory also lists community extensions such as cypress-plugin-tab and cypress-real-events. Consider an extension only if your project has a specific requirement the built-in command does not meet; the documented Tab use case works with cy.press().
