How to Silence Notifications Automatically with Do Not Disturb in Windows 11

Use Windows 11’s automatic Do Not Disturb rules to silence alerts on a schedule or during selected activities, while keeping priority notifications available.

To silence Windows 11 notifications on a schedule, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications, expand Turn on do not disturb automatically, then enable the time or activity rules you want. You can also set priority notifications so selected calls, reminders, or apps are still allowed through.

Set a recurring Do Not Disturb schedule

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically.
  3. Turn on During these times, then set the start and end times and choose how often the schedule repeats.
  4. Open Set priority notifications to choose whether calls, reminders, or selected apps can still notify you.

Windows menu labels and controls can vary after updates. If the wording differs, look on the Notifications page in Settings for the automatic Do Not Disturb rules. Microsoft documents these controls in Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows and its accessibility guidance on making it easier to focus on tasks.

Choose activity triggers for automatic quiet

On the same Notifications page, Windows can turn on Do Not Disturb automatically for several situations in addition to a recurring time window. Enable only the triggers that match how you use the PC:

  • When duplicating the display.
  • When playing a game.
  • When using an app in full-screen mode.
  • During the first hour after a Windows feature update.

These activity rules are useful when you want alerts muted only during a particular kind of activity, rather than at fixed hours. They do not replace the priority list, which controls which notifications may still get through.

Automatic rules, Focus sessions, and the manual toggle

Option How it starts When it fits
Automatic rules At scheduled times or when a selected activity condition applies. Recurring quiet hours or quiet during gaming, full-screen use, display duplication, or the first hour after a feature update.
Focus session You intentionally start a timed session. A one-off focus period when you want to choose a session duration and display options.
Manual Do Not Disturb toggle You turn it on or off yourself. A temporary change; toggling it alone does not create a recurring schedule.

Microsoft says Do Not Disturb turns on automatically when a Focus session starts. If Do Not Disturb was already on before the session, it remains on after the session ends. See Microsoft’s Focus guidance for the session workflow.

Review notifications after quiet time

Do Not Disturb silences notifications rather than removing them. Open Notification Center from the taskbar to review muted notifications later.
