How to sideload OTA updates on your Google Pixel [Video]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sideloading an OTA update is the fastest way to get a Google Pixel software update when it didn’t arrive automatically, is stuck downloading, or you need to move off an older build. The core idea is simple: you download the official OTA ZIP for your exact Pixel model and current build, then push it over ADB while Recovery applies it.

This guide covers the standard “Apply update from ADB” recovery flow, including the exact computer commands and the platform-specific setup you’ll need. If you’re following along with a video, treat it as a visual checklist: matching screen labels, file names, and the progress indicators in Recovery.

What sideloading an OTA update means on a Pixel

On Pixel, OTA (over-the-air) updates are packaged as ZIP files that Recovery can apply. Sideloading means you manually feed that ZIP to Recovery using ADB instead of waiting for the device to pull it over the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it works, it’s still an official update path. When it doesn’t, it’s usually because the OTA ZIP doesn’t match your device model or your current build number (OTA packages are often patch-based and version-specific).

Prerequisites before you start

Before you touch the update ZIP or Recovery, make sure these basics are true. Most sideload failures come from one of these items.

  • Your Pixel model matches the OTA package (e.g., Pixel 8 vs Pixel 8 Pro).
  • Your current build matches what the OTA expects. If you install an OTA built for a different base version, Recovery will reject it.
  • USB data connection uses a known-good cable (power-only cables are the #1 silent failure).
  • ADB works on your computer: you can see the device in a terminal using adb devices.
  • Enough charge (aim for 50%+; low battery can interrupt Recovery updates).

Get the correct OTA package

OTA sideload requires the exact ZIP intended for your Pixel and starting build. Don’t guess—download the right file or Recovery won’t apply it.

Find your Pixel model and build number

  • On the phone: Settings → About phone → find Model and Build number.
  • For some devices, you may also see a Build number under System → System update.

Download the official OTA ZIP

Use an official Google-hosted OTA source or the OTA file that matches your model and build. The key is that the ZIP is an incremental update for your current build (or you have a full image package when applicable).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After downloading, place the ZIP in a predictable folder on your computer, and keep the filename as-is.

Method 1: Sideload the OTA from Recovery (recommended)

This is the standard workflow for Pixel updates: boot into Recovery, choose ADB sideload, then send the OTA ZIP over USB.

Step 1: Enable Developer options and USB debugging

  • Settings → About phone
  • Tap Build number 7 times (enter your PIN if prompted).
  • Go back to Settings → System → Developer options.
  • Enable USB debugging.

When you plug into your computer, confirm the authorization prompt on the phone.

Method 2: Verify and install with ADB from a computer

Sometimes you’ll want to sanity-check that ADB can actually talk to the device and that the file is in the right place before you commit to the sideload step.

Confirm ADB sees your Pixel

With the phone connected (not necessarily in sideload mode yet), run:

  1. adb devices
  2. If you see a device ID with unauthorized, unlock the phone and accept the USB debugging prompt.

Confirm Recovery sideload mode is ready

Once Recovery shows “ready for sideload,” the ADB transfer should proceed normally. If ADB errors immediately, it usually means no stable USB transport or an incorrect connection/cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to do it on Windows

Windows is straightforward, but it’s also where driver issues happen. The goal is to get a working ADB setup so adb devices shows your Pixel as connected.

Install platform tools (ADB)

  1. Download Platform-Tools from Google’s Android SDK Platform-Tools page.
  2. Extract the ZIP to a simple path like C:\platform-tools.

Run commands from the correct folder

  1. Open PowerShell (or Command Prompt).
  2. cd into your OTA ZIP folder, or copy the ZIP into C:\platform-tools.
  3. Run adb devices.

Sideload from Recovery

  1. Boot the Pixel to Recovery and enable Apply update from ADB.
  2. In the same terminal session, run:

adb sideload update-<filename>.zip

How to do it on macOS

macOS usually has fewer driver obstacles. You still need a working ADB installation and a stable USB connection.

Install platform tools

  1. Download Android platform-tools for macOS.
  2. Extract it and use a folder like ~/platform-tools.

Check ADB connectivity

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run: cd ~/platform-tools
  3. Run: ./adb devices

Sideload from Recovery

  1. In Recovery, choose Apply update from ADB.
  2. Send the ZIP with:

./adb sideload update-<filename>.zip

How to do it on Linux

Linux works well once ADB is installed. If adb devices doesn’t show your Pixel, it’s usually a udev permissions or cable/connection issue.

Sideload from Recovery

  1. Boot Recovery → Apply update from ADB.
  2. Send the OTA ZIP:

./adb sideload update-<filename>.zip

Troubleshooting when sideload fails

If Recovery rejects the update or ADB transfer fails, don’t assume the ZIP is bad. Systematically check the three common categories: wrong package, broken USB/ADB connection, or an interrupted transfer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

ADB sideload fails immediately

  • Try a different USB cable (use one that supports data, not just charging).
  • Try another USB port, preferably a direct port on the computer.
  • Restart the sideload flow: exit Recovery, reboot, return to Recovery, then re-enable Apply update from ADB.

Recovery reports signature verification failed

This usually points to a mismatched ZIP or corrupted download. Re-download the OTA ZIP and confirm it’s for your specific Pixel model and build.

Recovery says the update is for a different build

OTA ZIPs are often incremental. If your Build number doesn’t match the OTA’s required base, you’ll get an error. Find the OTA package that corresponds to your current build, or use the correct full package approach if available for your device.

Transfer completes but installation fails

  • Don’t interrupt the cable during the apply step.
  • Ensure the device has sufficient battery (plug in to a charger if your recovery environment allows it).
  • Check whether you modified the device (custom recovery, system modifications). Some devices may not accept OTA installation when system partitions are altered.

Bootloop after sideload

If you bootloop right after an OTA sideload, let the device complete a couple of full boot cycles. If it keeps looping:

  • Return to Recovery and check whether the OTA actually completed (status text matters).
  • If needed, consider a more complete recovery path (factory image) rather than repeated incremental OTAs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Common mistakes that cause bootloops or failed sideloads

  • Using the wrong OTA ZIP (wrong Pixel model or wrong build base).
  • Renaming the ZIP incorrectly and then passing a wrong filename to ADB.
  • Using a power-only cable—Recovery sits ready, but ADB transfer never starts correctly.
  • Starting ADB sideload before Recovery is ready. Wait until Recovery explicitly shows it’s listening for the package.
  • Stopping the process when it’s still transferring/appplying. The “percent” progress and long verification steps are normal.
  • Skipping USB debugging authorization. You might pass adb devices once and then lose authorization after a reboot.

Safety, risks, and when not to sideload

Sideloading an OTA is generally safe when the ZIP matches your device and build. That said, it’s still a system partition change. If your Pixel is heavily modified, or you’re unsure about your current build, the risk increases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not sideload if your bootloader state or partitions are in an unexpected condition and you can’t confirm the correct OTA package.
  • If you’re on a beta channel, ensure the OTA corresponds to that channel and your exact build.
  • If you’re troubleshooting performance issues and not actually blocked from downloading, consider waiting for the normal OTA rollout.

FAQ

Will sideloading erase my data?

Incremental OTAs usually don’t wipe user data. However, if you end up on a broader recovery path (like flashing a full image), that can change the data outcome. Follow the update method carefully and confirm what package you’re applying.

How do I know which OTA ZIP I need?

Match the ZIP to your Pixel model and your current Build number. The safest approach is to download the package whose base build matches what your phone currently reports under About phone.

My device won’t show up in adb devices. What should I do?

Confirm USB debugging is enabled and authorize the connection prompt on the phone. Then try a different USB cable and port. On Windows, you may also need updated USB driver support for your device and platform-tools.

What if Recovery doesn’t show Apply update from ADB?

Recovery menu wording can vary by Pixel generation and build. Look for an option named similar to Apply update or Update from ADB. If it truly isn’t present, your Recovery environment may be different—verify the phone is actually in Recovery mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I sideload OTA updates on an iPhone or iPad?

No. OTA sideloading in this way is for Android devices like Google Pixel. iPhone and iPad use different update mechanisms managed through iOS and iPadOS.

Bottom Line

Sideloading an OTA update on your Google Pixel is a reliable fix when normal updates stall—as long as you download the correct OTA ZIP for your exact model and current build, then send it from Recovery using adb sideload.

If your sideload fails, don’t guess: verify the ZIP/build match, confirm ADB connectivity, and restart the Recovery “Apply update from ADB” flow. That combination resolves most errors quickly.
