Sunlit modules can keep producing DC even after an inverter is switched off, and other parts of the system may remain energized. Before cleaning, follow the shutdown instructions for your exact inverter and installation; if you cannot identify the correct controls or safe access route, hire a qualified solar electrician or specialist cleaner.
What “turning off” a solar system actually does
Solar panels generate direct-current (DC) electricity when illuminated. An inverter converts that DC into alternating-current (AC) electricity for use in a building or export to the grid. Switching off the inverter stops or interrupts conversion, but it does not switch off sunlight or guarantee that the modules and every conductor are de-energized. Solar installations can have DC-side and AC-side disconnects, and their layout depends on the system design. A string-inverter system and a microinverter system do not necessarily have the same isolation points. Disconnect locations and requirements can also differ by jurisdiction; the U.S. Department of Energy’s On-Site Solar Decision Guide describes the general distinction between DC- and AC-side disconnects.

- Identify your system. Find the inverter make and model and, if available, the installation or commissioning documents. The correct shutdown procedure is specific to the equipment and system arrangement.
- Read the manufacturer’s shutdown instructions. Follow the manual’s approved procedure for your system. Use only clearly identified, user-operable controls described there; do not substitute a generic switch order.
- Do not open electrical enclosures or disconnect PV wiring. Routine cleaning is not a reason to open an inverter, remove connectors, or handle conductors.
- Stop if anything is unclear or inaccessible. Ask the installer or a qualified solar electrician to identify the correct procedure. If the panels are on a roof or safe access is uncertain, use a qualified professional cleaner.
An inverter display or a single switch marked “off” is not proof that every part of the installation is safe to touch. In an incident dated July 23, 2008, OSHA documented a DC disconnect shutting off DC entering an inverter cabinet while AC lines remained energized from the power-line connection; an arc-flash injury followed. That historical case does not describe every home system, but it shows why one disconnect action cannot be treated as confirmation that all equipment is de-energized. Why one shutdown recipe cannot fit every installation
The controls and isolation points vary with equipment and wiring. Electrical Safety First’s technical guidance refers to UK wiring regulations, including BS 7671:2018+A3:2024 and regulation 712.537.2.101, and explains when a separate DC isolator should be provided. That is UK technical guidance, not a universal owner-operated shutdown sequence. See Electrical Safety First’s wiring-regulations guidance.
The Department of Energy’s photovoltaic operation-and-maintenance guidance addresses shutdown and disconnection when making damaged areas safe. It is not a cleaning-specific procedure. It also cautions that simply cycling a system that has tripped may not resolve the underlying fault. If your system shows a fault or has been damaged, do not treat a cleaning shutdown as troubleshooting; contact a qualified professional. Not necessarily. Electrical Safety First says that many panels have a self-cleaning coating and that rain can clear dirt and debris when panels are installed at a suitable angle. Rain is not a guarantee that every kind of buildup will disappear, and the guidance does not establish a fixed cleaning schedule for all systems.

The organization recommends visual checks and says specialist cleaning can remove accumulated dirt, dust, lichen, and bird droppings. It estimates that cleaning could increase energy production by up to 15 percent; this is a general upper estimate, not a guaranteed gain for an individual installation. Electrical Safety First’s solar-panel advice covers checks and cleaning.
A brush or other cleaning tool does not make roof work electrically or physically safe. If cleaning requires roof access, or if you are unsure about the system’s shutdown controls, arrange professional help rather than handling the panels or electrical equipment yourself.
