How to Shuffle Game Replays in OBS Without Restarting Your YouTube Stream

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to shuffle game replays, set playlist looping and visibility behavior, and bring them on air with a scene transition while the stream stays live.

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to shuffle a playlist of game replays while your YouTube stream stays live. Add the replay files to the source, turn on Shuffle Playlist, and use OBS scene transitions to bring the source on air; you do not need to stop the broadcast just to change scenes.

Set up a shuffled replay playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check this dependency first. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents the source and requirement.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the scene where the replays should appear, go to Sources → + → VLC Video and create or select the source. Open its Properties and add the replay files to the playlist.
  3. Enable shuffle. In the VLC Video properties, check Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents this as off by default. The option randomizes the media files instead of keeping the file-list order; the documentation does not specify whether the shuffle order is regenerated after every file or retained across application restarts.
  4. Choose whether the playlist repeats. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should start over after the list ends. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but verify the setting in your source rather than relying on a default that may have been changed.
  5. Set visibility behavior. Choose how the source behaves while it is not visible. OBS lists Stop when not visible, restart when visible as the VLC Video default. With that behavior, hiding the source or switching to a scene without it can stop and restart playback when it returns. If you need playback to continue while another scene is live, choose a suitable visibility behavior and test it.
  6. Put the source on air with a scene transition. Keep the VLC Video source visible in the live scene, or transition to a scene containing it. A transition changes the scene viewers see; it does not require ending the OBS broadcast. OBS’s Studio Mode overview explains how to prepare a scene and transition it to the live output.
  7. Check audio and playback before relying on it live. Confirm the intended game and replay audio are present in the output, and test the actual replay files. OBS’s source documentation does not guarantee that every file will decode identically or that one file will hand off to the next without a gap.

Choose the right OBS source

Use VLC Video when you want OBS to play several files as a playlist. The ordinary Media Source is for an individual media file; its Restart playback when source becomes active option controls whether that file restarts when it becomes visible. That is not a playlist shuffle control.

Why changing scenes does not end the stream

OBS sends the current live scene to the broadcast. In Studio Mode, you can prepare or edit another scene separately, then transition it to the live side when ready. This lets you switch between a replay scene and other scenes without stopping the OBS stream. The OBS Overview Guide describes that workflow.

A scene change and a dropped connection are different events. A transition is an OBS production action; a disconnection can occur if the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server is unstable. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, identifies network instability and dropped frames as possible causes of intermittent disconnections.

Troubleshoot a black, frozen, or out-of-order replay

  • VLC Video is not available: Install VLC, matching the architecture to OBS. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source.
  • The list plays in order instead of randomly: Open the VLC Video source’s Properties and check Shuffle Playlist. The ordinary Media Source’s restart option does not shuffle files.
  • The replay restarts after switching scenes: Check Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops the source when it is hidden and restarts it when visible. Keep the source active or change the behavior if continuous playback is needed.
  • The source is black or frozen: Confirm the source is included and visible in the active scene, verify that playlist entries point to the intended files, and test those files in your setup. OBS’s documentation does not certify every game replay format.
  • The stream itself disconnects: Check the network connection and OBS connection indicators. Dropped frames or an intermittent connection to the ingest server are separate from shuffle configuration; use OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
  • There is a pause between replay files: Do not assume the playlist will transition gaplessly. Test the specific files and output before using the setup for a live broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded replays running on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
