How to Show Primary Actions Inline in the Windows 11 Context Menu

Use Settings > Personalization > Context menu to arrange Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Share, and Delete inline—if your Windows 11 build includes the option.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11 builds that include the option, open Settings > Personalization > Context menu, then turn on Arrange primary actions inline under Additional options. It places Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Share, and Delete inline in the modern context menu. The option is reported in an Insider rollout, so it may not appear on every PC.

Turn on inline primary actions in Settings

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization in the left pane.
  3. Open Context menu.
  4. Under Additional options, turn on Arrange primary actions inline.
  5. Close Settings and open a modern Windows 11 context menu to see the changed layout.

The preference is described as applying to the modern context menu for the current account. It changes the placement of Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Share, and Delete; it does not restore the full classic menu. ElevenForum’s tutorial documents the setting and its scope.

Why the setting may be missing

An August 2026 tutorial reports that Microsoft began rolling out the broader context-menu customization experience to Windows Insiders with Windows 11 build 26340.9212 (Experimental 26H2). This is reported Insider availability, not confirmation that the toggle is included on every release channel or device. If you do not see Context menu in Personalization, or the inline-actions toggle under Additional options, your build or rollout status may not include it yet. Windows Central also reported the experience in Insider builds in August 2026.

Optional per-user Registry alternative

An independent tutorial documents a Registry preference for users comfortable making manual changes. Microsoft documentation reviewed for this setting does not establish this value as an officially supported troubleshooting method, so use Settings when it is available.

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerContextMenuPreferencesDemoteTopBar.
  2. Set the Enabled DWORD to 1 to enable inline actions. The documented off/default value is 0.

To undo the change, restore Enabled to 0, or remove the value or key if that matches its previous state. Registry edits affect the current user and should be made carefully. The values are documented by the same ElevenForum tutorial.

Modern and classic context menus are different

The inline setting rearranges actions in the modern Windows 11 context menu. It does not change the classic menu opened with Shift + right-click; that shortcut continues to open the classic menu. Windows Central’s August 2026 coverage likewise describes the shortcut as a way to access it.
