To hide notification text while keeping alerts, open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. To remove an app’s alerts from the Lock Screen, change that app’s alert placement; to stop its notifications entirely, turn off Allow Notifications. These are separate controls.
Hide notification contents while keeping alerts
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Show Previews.
- Choose the preview setting that fits your privacy needs:
- Always: Preview contents can appear while iPhone is locked.
- When Unlocked: Contents appear only after iPhone is unlocked.
- Never: Preview contents are not shown on the Lock Screen.
This changes what notification previews reveal, not whether notifications are delivered. Previews can include message text, lines from Mail messages, or Calendar invitation details; what appears depends on the app, and some apps do not support previews. See Apple’s notification settings guide and Lock Screen guide.

Hide Lock Screen alerts from one app
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap the app under Notification Style.
- In the app’s alert options, deselect Lock Screen. Other alert destinations, such as Notification Center or banners, may remain enabled.
Available options vary by app. For the app’s full notification controls, see Apple’s guide to changing notification settings.

Turn off an app’s notifications entirely
Go to Settings > Notifications, tap the app, and turn off Allow Notifications. This stops that app’s notifications rather than merely hiding its Lock Screen alerts.

Change how notifications are arranged
To change the Lock Screen presentation, go to Settings > Notifications and choose Count, Stack, or List. Count shows the number of notifications, Stack groups them by app, and List displays them in a list. You can also change the layout by pinching notifications on the Lock Screen. This changes the arrangement, not preview privacy or which apps are allowed to send alerts. Details are in Apple’s notification settings guide.
Control access to notification history while locked
If you want to control whether someone can open Notification Center from the Lock Screen, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, then under Allow Access When Locked, change Notification Center. This setting controls access to notification history while locked; it is distinct from hiding preview contents or changing an app’s alert placement. See Apple’s iOS 26 guide to viewing and responding to notifications.
