The current FileZilla method
FileZilla normally displays the directory listing returned by the server. Many servers and FTP clients treat names beginning with a period as hidden, so entries such as .htaccess, .env or a dot-prefixed source-control directory may not appear in the remote pane.

In current FileZilla guidance, the command that asks for hidden entries is in the Server menu:
- Connect to the correct server and open the remote directory you need to inspect.
- Open Server in the top menu.
- Select Force showing hidden files.
- Refresh the remote directory listing so FileZilla requests the contents again.
The command changes how FileZilla requests the listing; it does not rename, move or unhide files on the server. You still need the account to have access to the directory and its contents.

Why dot files are not visible
On Unix-like hosting systems, a leading period is a conventional marker for a hidden name. The period is part of the actual filename: .htaccess is not the same file as htaccess. FTP clients often suppress these entries in their normal view, and a hosting server may also return a listing that omits them.
This behavior is separate from Windows’ local “hidden” attribute. FileZilla is showing a remote directory listing produced through the connection, not simply applying the visibility setting from your desktop file manager. Consequently, changing a local operating-system setting will not make a missing remote entry appear.
What hidden files commonly contain
.htaccesscan contain web-server rules, redirects or access controls.- Dot-prefixed configuration files can hold application settings.
- Source-control and deployment directories may begin with a period.
- Temporary or backup names can be excluded by a FileZilla directory-listing filter.
These names are often hidden because they are configuration or operational files, not because they are safe to ignore. Editing or deleting one can change how a site runs, so download a backup before making a change.
Refresh the listing after enabling the option
Changing the menu option does not guarantee that the already displayed directory pane will be replaced immediately. The pane may still contain the previous response from the server. Use FileZilla’s refresh control to request the remote directory again after selecting Force showing hidden files.

- Open the target folder in the remote pane.
- Select Server > Force showing hidden files if it is not already active for the connection.
- Activate the remote-pane refresh control.
- Wait for the transfer queue and status area to show that the directory listing has completed.
- Look for the exact dot-prefixed filename, including its leading period.
If a folder is large, sort or scroll the remote list carefully. Searching for “htaccess” while overlooking the initial period can make a visible file appear to be absent.

Check directory-listing filters
A client-side filter can hide a file even after the server has returned it. FileZilla Pro documentation identifies filters that can exclude configuration, temporary, backup, source-control or other files and directories.
To inspect them, open View > Directory listing filters…. Disable any filter that excludes the file type or directory you are trying to find, then refresh the remote listing again.
Filter troubleshooting checklist
- Temporarily disable filters that match configuration or dot-prefixed names.
- Check both file and directory rules; a hidden parent directory can make its contents appear missing.
- Look for rules based on filename, extension, path or attributes.
- After changing a filter, refresh the remote pane rather than relying on the old list.
- Re-enable unrelated filters once you have found or downloaded the required file.
If disabling filters reveals the file, the server was already returning it and the problem was entirely on the client side. Record which filter caused the exclusion before restoring your preferred filtering setup.
Menu wording depends on the FileZilla version
Instructions written for older releases may point to a different menu. That does not necessarily mean the feature has been removed.

Menu labels can also vary with localization. Search the Server menu for wording that includes “force,” “show” and “hidden” before changing unrelated settings. Avoid assuming that an older screenshot reflects the current layout.
Understand the protocol limitation
The force-show feature is documented as an FTP feature and is associated with a LIST -a request. It is not a universal command that can override every protocol or every server implementation.

When a connection is not FTP, selecting the command may have no effect or may not be available. Check the protocol shown in the site manager or connection status before treating the missing file as a FileZilla display problem.
When the server controls the result
FileZilla can only display entries that the server sends. A broken or nonstandard server may omit hidden files, misinterpret the listing request or return an incomplete response. FileZilla’s own interface text notes that a proper server should show all files, while some broken servers hide files from the user; the force option is intended to ask such a server to show them.
This distinction matters because a client-side refresh cannot manufacture an entry that was never returned. If the file remains absent after enabling the option, disabling filters and refreshing, ask the hosting provider to verify the directory listing for your account. Include:

- The hostname and remote path.
- The protocol used for the connection.
- The exact filename, including its leading period.
- The time of the test and the directory-listing result.
- Whether another approved access method can see the same file.
Do not assume that a missing listing proves that the file has been deleted. It may be present but excluded by server policy, account permissions or a faulty listing implementation.

Case 1: You cannot find .htaccess
- Confirm that you are connected to the intended hosting account, not a different site or home directory.
- Navigate to the document root or directory where the file is expected.
- Choose Server > Force showing hidden files.
- Refresh the remote listing.
- Open View > Directory listing filters… and disable rules that exclude configuration or dot-prefixed files.
- Refresh again and check the filename with the initial period.
- If it is still absent, ask the provider whether the FTP server returns hidden entries for your account.
Case 2: Some hidden files appear, but one does not
This pattern suggests that the general display setting is working, so compare the missing file’s path and name with the entries that are visible. Check for a filter matching its extension, a different directory than expected, or server-side permissions on that particular path. A file can be present in one directory and absent from another listing because the account has different access rights.
Case 3: The option is missing from the menu
First verify that the remote connection is active. Then check whether your FileZilla build uses the older View > Show hidden files wording or exposes a preference under Edit > Settings > Remote File List. If the connection uses SFTP or another non-FTP protocol, the FTP-only command may not be offered or may not control that listing.

Refreshes can produce different results when a server generates inconsistent listings. Confirm that no directory-listing filter is being reapplied, then test the same path again. If the result changes without a client-side setting change, report the inconsistent listing to the hosting provider; the server may be returning incomplete data.
Case 5: The remote pane is blank or incomplete
Do not focus only on hidden-file settings. Confirm that the connection completed, that you opened the correct remote path and that the account can list that directory. A general listing failure is different from a single dot file being hidden. The provider may need to correct permissions, protocol handling or server configuration.
One-time command versus a persistent preference
Current instructions describe Force showing hidden files as a command in the Server menu. Older instructions describe Always show hidden files under Edit > Settings > Remote File List, which sounds like a persistent display preference. These are not interchangeable labels across every version.
If your release provides the persistent setting, it can save you from repeating the change when opening listings. If it does not, use the Server command for the active connection and refresh each directory as needed. Do not rely on a guide that assumes a setting exists in your build; menu wording and placement are version-dependent.

Visibility is not a permission to modify. Before editing a hidden file, download a backup with a recognizable date or version name. Make one change at a time, preserve the leading period and exact capitalization, and upload only after checking the local copy.
- Keep a copy of the original file before replacing it.
- Do not remove a dot file merely because it looks unused.
- Use the remote path shown by FileZilla to avoid editing a similarly named file in another directory.
- After an upload, refresh the listing and confirm the expected file size and timestamp.
- If a site stops working, restore the backup before making additional changes.
For sensitive configuration files, limit who can download or edit them and use the hosting provider’s documented recovery process if access is lost.
Verification checklist
Before concluding that a hidden file is unavailable, confirm each item:
- You are connected to the correct server and account.
- The remote pane is open at the expected directory.
- Server > Force showing hidden files has been selected, or your version’s equivalent is active.
- The remote listing has been refreshed after the change.
- View > Directory listing filters… contains no rule excluding the file or its parent directory.
- The connection protocol is compatible with the FTP-only feature.
- The server actually returns the entry and your account is allowed to list it.
If all client-side checks pass and the entry is still missing, the next action is provider support rather than repeated FileZilla refreshes.
