To show custom post type entries in a searchable table, query the post type with WP_Query and render the results with a search control—or use a plugin that provides a front-end table. If you mean listing the registered post type definitions rather than showing their entries to visitors, use WP-CLI’s wp post-type list command instead; it reports the types, not a public content table.
First decide what you need to list
WordPress custom post types are registered content types, such as events, staff profiles, or products. A request to “list custom post types” can mean either an inventory of those definitions for an administrator or a table of the entries saved under one type for site visitors. The right method depends on that distinction.

- Need an inventory of registered types? Use WP-CLI.
- Need visitors to browse and search entries? Build a front-end query and table, or use a plugin designed for that display.
- Need to search content in the WordPress dashboard? Choose an admin search tool; it does not create a public table.
How do I list the registered post types?
From a terminal in the WordPress installation, run wp post-type list. WP-CLI lists the post types registered in that environment and defaults to table output. It can also format results as CSV, JSON, count, or YAML. This is useful for a developer or administrator checking which types are available, but it does not list the content entries or create a searchable page for visitors. See the WP-CLI post-type list command.

How can I display one custom post type in a searchable table?
The code-based route has three parts: retrieve entries of the desired type, render each result as a table row, and provide a search control that submits criteria back to the query. WordPress documents using WP_Query to fetch custom posts and a custom loop to display them; its developer handbook also covers retrieving and rendering custom post type content. Start with the official custom post types documentation and the Loop documentation.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Choose the post type and fields. Decide which registered type to query and which values visitors need to see, such as a title, date, or a relevant custom field.
- Query the entries. Use
WP_Querywith the chosen post type and appropriate visibility and search criteria. Use the WordPress API for an ordinary listing rather than querying the database directly. - Render the results. Output a table header and a row for each returned post. Escape values when placing them in HTML, and link to an entry only if that is useful to the visitor.
- Add search and navigation. Provide a search field that passes the selected search term into the query. If the listing can be long, account for pagination and make sure search criteria remain in effect as visitors move between pages.
The official documentation establishes the query-and-render approach, but does not provide a single complete searchable-table recipe. Search behavior depends on what fields you want to search, and large listings may need careful pagination and performance choices. Set those details to suit your WordPress version and content model, and test the result with the actual data and permissions on your site.
Can a plugin make the table easier?
If you prefer not to write the query and table markup, the WordPress.org listing for WP Post List Table describes displaying custom post types in a table and directs users to create a page with its shortcode. Check the plugin’s current release, compatibility information, maintenance activity, and feature behavior before installing it; plugin listings can change.

Other plugins solve adjacent, but different, problems:
- Search Hero: its listing describes a shortcode with a
post_typeargument and search over public searchable post types, with each search covering one post type. That is a search option for a selected type, not necessarily a table of mixed content. See the Search Hero listing. - Custom Post Type UI: this is primarily for registering and managing types. Its listing describes CPT UI Pro as adding front-end display tools and admin list-table controls, so assess those features separately from the narrower need for a searchable visitor-facing table. See the Custom Post Type UI listing.
- Admin Search and Find Posts by Title: these are dashboard workflows, not public table builders. Admin Search describes configurable searches across post types and taxonomies, including custom post types; Find Posts by Title describes a title-search submenu for public custom post types in a native admin table. See the Admin Search listing and Find Posts by Title listing.
Where should custom post type registration live?
If you control the code that registers the type, WordPress recommends putting register_post_type() in a plugin rather than a theme. That keeps the type registration from disappearing when the site changes themes. The advice concerns the content type’s registration; it does not by itself build or maintain the searchable table. See the WordPress registration guidance.
