To show a countdown between videos on a 24/7 YouTube stream, insert it into the program feed your encoder sends to YouTube. The simplest method is to make a short countdown video and put it between the videos in your playback sequence. You can also create a timer scene in streaming software such as OBS. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does not provide a native setting that automatically adds a countdown between items.
Why the countdown has to come from your encoder
YouTube receives one continuous live program from your encoder. As YouTube Help puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” That means the countdown needs to be part of the outgoing program, just like the videos before and after it—not an assumed YouTube playlist transition setting.

YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect and operate a live feed, but do not document a built-in between-video countdown control. Treat the timer as part of your production workflow. The exact steps for a software-generated timer vary with the encoder you choose.
Method 1: Insert a rendered countdown clip
A prepared clip is the most straightforward option: it is simply another segment in the program. Make the countdown the duration you want, then place it between the prerecorded videos in the playback sequence.

- Create the clip. Render a countdown video with the duration, appearance, and audio you want. Check that the timer reaches zero at the intended end of the clip.
- Add it to the sequence. Place the clip between the prerecorded videos in the encoder or playback system producing your continuous feed. Do not assume a YouTube live event playlist will insert it for you.
- Check transitions. Preview the countdown between representative videos. Listen for unwanted gaps, abrupt volume changes, or audio that continues when you expect silence.
- Test before going live. YouTube recommends testing the stream before an event and monitoring stream health while live. Check the video and audio transition as well as the countdown itself.
Method 2: Build a countdown scene in streaming software
Instead of rendering a clip, you can make a timer graphic in software such as OBS and switch to that scene between videos. This gives you a software-generated countdown, but the exact scene setup and timer behavior depend on the encoder and timer method you select. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a universal OBS countdown configuration.
- Prepare the scene. Add your timer graphic or source to a dedicated countdown scene in your encoder.
- Put the scene in the sequence. Arrange for the program to switch to the countdown between video items, then return to the next video when the timer ends.
- Verify reset and timing. Test that the timer starts at the intended value each time and does not remain at zero or carry over from the previous break.
- Test audio and motion. Check the scene alongside representative video content and confirm the audio behaves as intended through both transitions.
For OBS-to-YouTube streaming, OBS is one software-encoder option; YouTube’s encoder setup uses the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. An OBS community guide covers that connection workflow, though interface details in community guides may change over time.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live event and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder you are using. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder feed, then manage the event and check its health in Live Control Room.
- Before relying on the stream unattended, test that video playback advances, the countdown appears in the right place and resets, audio transitions are correct, and the encoder stays connected.
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and related settings. The appropriate values depend on the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and available connection, so there is no single numeric configuration that fits every setup.

A countdown that works once may still fail in a continuous rotation. Test the complete sequence, not just an isolated scene: confirm that playback advances from video to countdown to the next video, the timer resets on each pass, and audio behaves as intended. While the stream is running, monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health so you can spot a dropped feed or a sequence that has stopped advancing.

Protect the channel as well as the feed
A reliable transition does not make the content eligible to stream. Before running a 24/7 rotation, make sure you have the rights needed for every video and its audio, and consider whether the channel’s use of prerecorded or repeated material complies with YouTube’s applicable policies. The encoder guidance cited here does not establish that a particular playlist or countdown satisfies those rules.
