Use a separate, password-protected guest Wi-Fi network when your router supports one. Give guests that network’s credentials—ideally through a built-in QR-code or router-app sharing option—rather than exposing your main Wi-Fi password. A QR code makes joining easier; it does not, by itself, make access temporary or restrict what guests can reach.
How do I create a guest Wi-Fi network?
Guest-network controls vary by router, so check its documentation or companion app for the exact steps. In general, enable the guest network, give it a name and password different from your main Wi-Fi, and limit access to household devices if your router offers that option. Keeping separate credentials makes it easier to change or disable guest access without changing the password used by your own devices.

Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi provide one documented example: in the Google Home app, create or enable Guest Wi-Fi, set a distinct network name and password, and choose which supported shared devices guests may use. The app can share the password by copying it or sending it through messaging or email. A Nest display can show the guest network’s name and password; Google also documents a setting to disable showing the password on voice-assistant-enabled displays. Some voice features depend on product and region. These instructions are specific to supported Google setups, not a universal router menu. See Google’s Guest Wi-Fi instructions.

How do I share my Wi-Fi password with guests?
Once the guest network is ready, share its credentials only with the people who need them. Use a device’s built-in sharing flow, show a QR code in person, or send the password privately to the intended guest. Avoid displaying or posting a credential-bearing QR code where unintended visitors could scan it.

If you do not have a guest network, you can share your existing secured Wi-Fi with trusted visitors, but they will have the network credentials. They may be able to reconnect while those credentials remain valid. Whether connected devices can reach other devices on your local network depends on router settings; check the router documentation rather than assuming guests are isolated.
Can I share Wi-Fi with a QR code?
On Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet, then Internet.
- Select the connected Wi-Fi network and tap Share.
- Let your guest scan the QR code displayed on your device to join.
Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 12 and later; menu names and availability can vary by handset and software version. See Google’s Android Wi-Fi instructions.

On Windows
Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. Microsoft also documents Wi-Fi password sharing with another device through a QR code, but its cited pages do not establish one set of steps that works across all Windows versions and devices. Check your Windows version and device guidance for the available sharing option. Sources: Microsoft’s wireless-network setup guidance and Microsoft’s update information.
Is it safe to give guests my Wi-Fi password?
It can be reasonable to share a secured network with trusted visitors, but a separate guest network is usually the clearer choice: guests receive its credentials instead of your main network’s. A guest network is not a guarantee of isolation. The available controls—and whether guests can reach household devices—depend on the router, so confirm what yours actually does.

Keep Wi-Fi security enabled. Apple recommends WPA3 Personal where supported, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional when compatibility with older devices matters, and a strong password for joining. If those modes are unavailable, Apple lists WPA2 Personal with AES as a fallback. Apple advises against open or unsecured networks, WEP, TKIP, and older WPA modes. Open networks disable authentication and encryption, potentially exposing shared resources and network traffic. See Apple’s recommended router settings.
How do I end a guest’s Wi-Fi access?
A QR code is a way to provide network credentials, not an expiry timer. The cited Android and Google Home instructions do not describe automatic expiration of shared access. To end access, use your router’s controls to disable the guest network or change its password, if supported. If you shared your main network password, changing it may be necessary to prevent guests with the old credentials from reconnecting; your own devices may also need the new password.

What if I’m sharing a phone’s hotspot?
A phone hotspot is different from a guest network on a home router. Apple documents WPA2/WPA3 Personal as the default for Personal Hotspot on iOS and iPadOS. On iPhone 12 or later, turning on Maximize Compatibility restricts the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal. That setting concerns hotspot compatibility, not guest-network setup on a router. See Apple’s Wi-Fi security documentation.

- Separate credentials: Does the router create a guest network with its own name and password?
- Device access: Can guests reach household devices, or only devices you select?
- Sharing options: Does your phone or router support a QR code or another convenient sharing flow?
- Revocation: Can you change the guest password or turn off guest access when visitors no longer need it?
- Security and compatibility: Does the network support WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional while working with guests’ devices?
These controls differ among routers and devices. If your router lacks a guest network, a Wi-Fi router with guest-network controls is a feature to consider; check its documentation for the isolation and security options it actually provides.
