Use the trip-sharing feature inside your rideshare app to send a trusted person a link to your ride. Uber lets riders share after a driver accepts; Lyft lets riders share ride details during a ride. Check who is selected before sending: the link may reveal your location and identifying details about the driver and vehicle.
What a shared ride link can show
Details vary by app. Uber says the notification includes the driver’s first name, vehicle information, and your location on a real-time map. Lyft says its link can show pickup and drop-off locations, approximate GPS location, the driver’s name and photo, and vehicle information, including the license plate number. Send the link only to someone you trust.

Share an Uber trip
- Wait until a driver accepts your trip request.
- Swipe up on the ride screen and tap Send Status. Depending on your app version, look for the trip-status sharing control; Uber’s rider overview calls the feature Share My Trip.
- Select a contact, or choose the option to add contacts manually, then send the link or notification.
Uber’s rider guidance says you can pre-select up to five contacts. For recurring sharing, Uber’s Follow My Ride instructions direct riders to the Safety Toolkit to set up, start, or stop the feature. The help page also describes managing contacts at Account → App settings → Follow My Ride and says the feature is available in select cities. Check your app to see whether it is offered where you are.

Share a Lyft ride
- During the ride, tap Safety tools at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Share ride details.
- Choose a recipient and send the link.
Lyft’s cited instructions are for its US English help page. Its settings also let you choose contacts for automatic sharing: up to five, with options to share every ride, only rides between 9 PM and 6 AM, or never. If automatic sharing is set to never, you can still share an individual ride manually from Safety tools.

Check the sharing settings before your next ride
- Confirm the selected recipient or automatic-sharing contacts before sending or enabling sharing.
- Review what information the link exposes, especially location and vehicle details.
- Look for the corresponding trip-status or safety control if the labels in your app differ from these instructions.
- Do not treat ride sharing as an emergency-response service; it sends trip details to your chosen contact.
