You can share your screen on a YouTube livestream in two ways: use encoder software for screen-led streams, gameplay, and more elaborate layouts, or use the screen-sharing control in Live Control Room’s webcam workflow for a straightforward presentation. The webcam option requires a connected webcam and microphone; an encoder does not require a webcam.
Choose a screen-sharing method
| Method | What it needs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder software | A computer running an encoder, configured with your YouTube stream URL and key | Screen-led presentations, gameplay, overlays, and productions with multiple sources |
| Live Control Room webcam share | A connected webcam and microphone | A simple browser-based presentation sharing an entire screen, a window, or a browser tab |
YouTube describes encoders as a way to share a screen or broadcast gameplay, and its encoder directory lists verified products that are not made by YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and verified encoders information.

Share your screen with encoder software
- Check channel eligibility first. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a scheduled stream. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says creators must be at least 16. Check your current status in YouTube Studio; account eligibility and policy can change. See Get started with live streaming.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room, then create or select the stream you plan to use.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. In your encoder, choose a YouTube preset if one is available; otherwise, enter those details in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Add the screen source. In the encoder, add the display, application window, or gameplay source you want viewers to see. Check that the chosen source shows the intended content and that desktop or application audio is routed as intended. Encoder interfaces vary, so the exact source labels depend on the software.
- Use the matching server and key. If configuring the server manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and the matching stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start sending the feed from the encoder, then wait for it to appear in Live Control Room. Check the picture and audio in the incoming preview before selecting Go live.
- End the stream cleanly. When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder setup instructions.
Share a screen through Live Control Room’s webcam workflow
This route shares a screen from the browser-based webcam workflow. A webcam and microphone must be connected, even when your main goal is to show a screen rather than your camera.

Prepare your stream and connection
Test the complete setup
Test before the event using audio and movement similar to what you expect during the actual stream. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health and messages while live. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond your stream bitrate. For example, if the encoder sends at a given bitrate, the available upload capacity should be at least 1.2 times that bitrate. Other people or devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. YouTube discusses this in its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common screen-share problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check verification and live-stream restrictions in YouTube Studio. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours before expecting it to be available.
- The encoder feed does not appear: Confirm that the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and that the encoder is running. If you entered a server manually, use the RTMPS URL provided there.
- The preview is blank or shows the wrong content: Check the selected display or window source in the encoder, then confirm the updated image in the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Viewers report choppy video or interruptions: Check stream health and messages, account for other network use, and ensure upload capacity meets YouTube’s recommended headroom beyond the bitrate.
- The webcam screen-share option is not suitable: The documented webcam route requires a connected webcam and microphone. Use an encoder for a screen-led setup that does not rely on that webcam workflow.
- Tab audio is unexpected: When sharing a browser tab that supports webcam, its audio is shared by default. Stop sharing and choose another source or adjust the production setup if that is not what you want viewers to hear.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded video to keep looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo runs it from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
