Set up emergency contacts, location permissions and your phone’s emergency features before you need them. On Android, use Emergency Sharing in the Safety app; on iPhone, configure Emergency SOS and emergency contacts. These tools can alert people you trust and share available location information, but they do not replace calling emergency services.
Choose the right kind of emergency location sharing
There are three different actions to keep straight: contacting emergency responders, sharing your location with people you trust, and sending a location to responders through a service such as Android Emergency Location Service (ELS). They may involve the same phone, but they do not have the same recipients or triggers.

- Trusted-contact sharing: Android Emergency Sharing can send information to selected personal contacts. On iPhone, Emergency SOS can alert emergency contacts after an emergency call.
- Calling for help: Use the local emergency number when you need emergency services. A contact-sharing feature is not a substitute for that call.
- Responder location: Android ELS may send a device’s location directly to authorized emergency response services when the user calls or texts an emergency number, where supported and enabled. It is separate from sharing with personal contacts. See Android Emergency Location Service.
Set up Android Emergency Sharing
Google’s Android Help describes Emergency Sharing in the Safety app. Exact labels and eligibility can vary by Android version, region and account supervision. Review Google’s current instructions for your phone at Get help during an emergency with your Android phone.
- Add at least one emergency contact in the Safety app and check that the contact details are current.
- Grant the requested location permission, and make sure Location Services are enabled.
- To start a share, open Safety, tap Emergency sharing, choose the contacts, optionally add a message, then tap Share.
- To end it sooner, return to Emergency Sharing in the Safety app and stop the share. Google says it ends automatically after 24 hours.
Emergency Sharing may include real-time location and battery percentage. A Wi-Fi or mobile-network internet connection is required for real-time location sharing with emergency contacts; Google notes, “You won’t be able to share your real-time location with your emergency contacts unless you have a Wi-Fi or mobile network internet connection.” If connectivity is lost, do not assume contacts are receiving current updates.

Use Safety Check for a planned outing
Safety Check is designed for a situation such as walking or travelling alone when you want your phone to prompt you to confirm that you are safe. In the Safety app, select Safety Check, choose a reason and duration (up to 24 hours), then choose contacts. If you do not respond to the check prompt, emergency sharing can begin. If the phone is off or has no signal, the share may use the last known location at the check-in time. This is a defined check-in feature, not a guarantee that someone can locate or rescue you.
Set up iPhone Emergency SOS and emergency contacts
Add emergency contacts in advance and review the SOS instructions for your iPhone model, software version and region. Apple says that after an emergency call ends, the iPhone alerts emergency contacts by text unless you cancel; it sends your current location if available, and contacts receive location updates for a period after SOS mode begins. Those updates are not indefinite. Start with Apple’s Use SOS to contact emergency services on your iPhone and its guidance on making an emergency call or text on iPhone or Apple Watch. Cellular availability matters, and supported models may offer satellite emergency-contact options in certain regions; check Apple’s current instructions for whether your device and location qualify.

What to check before relying on either phone
- Contacts: Add trusted people and verify their numbers or details.
- Permissions and connectivity: Enable the relevant location permission and understand whether the feature needs internet or cellular service.
- Trigger and controls: Learn how to initiate SOS or sharing, what prompts you may need to answer, and how to stop a share.
- Power: Keep your phone charged. A power bank can provide backup power on a long outing, but it cannot create cellular or internet coverage.
- Remote-area limits: Check local emergency-service availability and any satellite capability supported by your specific device before depending on it.
- Local emergency number: Know the number for the place you are visiting; contact sharing does not summon responders by itself.
Availability depends on the phone and conditions
Features can vary with phone model, operating system, permissions, account eligibility, network access and region. No universal success rate for personal-contact location sharing on iPhone and Android is established by the cited platform guidance, so these features should not be treated as guaranteed delivery. Android’s ELS page reports support on “over 99% of active Android devices with Google Play services,” but that figure concerns ELS device coverage—not whether a trusted contact receives a share or whether a location fix succeeds.
