How to share your live location from Waze or Google Maps

Waze can send your current map position or a place. Google Maps provides true real-time Location sharing, link sharing for up to 24 hours, and navigation-based trip progress.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Google Maps for continuous, real-time location sharing. Open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing and New share, select a duration and recipient, then tap Share. Waze’s documented Send Location command sends your current map position or a selected place; its instructions do not establish continuous live tracking.

If you only need someone to follow a journey, Google Maps also has Share trip progress, which automatically ends when you arrive or stop navigation.

Which app should you use?

The right choice depends on whether the recipient needs one position, an updating position, or progress toward a destination. “Live location” is often used loosely, but the apps document different actions. Waze documents sending the location currently shown on its map or sending a selected place. Google Maps has a specific Location sharing control for an updating device position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Need Use What the recipient gets
Send where you are now Waze Send Location A map location or place sent through your chosen app; the cited Waze instructions do not describe ongoing tracking.
Let someone follow you for a chosen period Google Maps Location sharing Your real-time device location for the duration you select.
Keep someone updated during a trip Google Maps Share trip progress Your destination, estimated arrival time and current location until you arrive or end navigation.

Google describes its feature this way: “You can choose who can find your location and how long you share it in Google Maps.” That choice of person and duration is the important distinction: you are not simply dropping a pin, you are authorizing access for a defined period.

Current location, live location and trip progress are different

A current-location message is a snapshot. It tells somebody where the map placed you when you tapped Send Location, and the message itself does not become a tracking session. A live-location share is an ongoing feed that can update as your device moves. Trip progress is a temporary navigation session: the recipient follows a destination, estimated arrival time and current position while navigation is active.

Use the snapshot when a friend needs to find a meeting point or you want to identify the place shown in Waze. Use Location sharing when somebody needs to monitor your movement over a selected interval. Use trip progress when the only reason to share is to let someone know how a particular journey is going. Picking the narrowest option limits unnecessary access and makes it clearer to the recipient what to expect.

Share your current location with Waze

Waze’s current-location workflow is a send action. It is useful for telling someone where you are right now, but do not present it as a live-location tracker based on Waze’s documented instructions. The recipient receives the location or place you selected through another app, such as messaging or email.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Send the position shown on the map

  1. Open Waze on your phone and find the current-position arrow or blue dot.
  2. Tap the arrow or blue dot.
  3. Tap Send Location.
  4. Choose how to send it, such as a messaging or email app, and select the recipient.

The recipient receives the map location you sent. If you move afterward, the sent position does not become a continuously updating share under this workflow. If you need movement updates, switch to Google Maps Location sharing rather than repeatedly assuming a Waze message is live.

Because the final handoff uses an app you choose, the appearance of the recipient picker depends on the phone and installed apps. Check the conversation or email address before sending, especially if several contacts have similar names. Waze’s documented steps are in Waze Help: Share your current location.

Send a saved place

  1. Tap the Waze search bar.
  2. Tap Saved.
  3. Tap the more-options icon beside the saved place.
  4. Choose Send location.
  5. Choose a sending method and recipient.

This sends the saved destination, not your live position. It is useful for sharing a home, business, pickup point or other place you have stored in Waze. The recipient can use the resulting place information separately from any location-sharing permission. Waze documents this process in Share a location with friends.

Send a place from navigation history

  1. Swipe up to display your navigation history.
  2. Long-press the relevant place.
  3. Tap Send location.
  4. Choose the app and person to receive it.

Again, the shared item is the selected place from history rather than a continuing location feed. This can help when you want to tell somebody which destination you visited without sharing where you are now.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Waze safely in a car

Waze says to share from the phone rather than the car interface. Disconnect the phone first if you are using Android Auto or CarPlay, then perform the sharing steps on the handset. Avoid interacting with the phone while driving; set up the share before moving or have a passenger do it. The car-screen restriction is a workflow limitation, not evidence that Waze offers a different kind of live tracking through Android Auto or CarPlay.

Share your real-time location with Google Maps

Google Maps’ Location sharing feature lets you select both the recipient and how long that person can follow your device. The basic sequence is the same on Android and on iPhone or iPad, although wording and placement can change as the app is updated. You must open Maps while signed in to the Google Account that will share the location.

Android

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone or tablet and sign in to your Google Account.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Location sharing, then New share.
  4. Choose how long to share.
  5. Select a recipient and tap Share.

For direct account-to-account sharing, Google’s instructions say the recipient’s Gmail address should be in your Google Contacts. If Maps asks for access to your contacts, allow it if you want to select that person directly. You can review the final recipient and duration before confirming. The Android instructions are at Google Maps Help: Share your real-time location with others in Google Maps.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Google Maps and sign in to your Google Account.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Choose Location sharing, then New share.
  4. Set the sharing duration.
  5. Choose the recipient and tap Share.

The iPhone and iPad flow uses the same Location sharing and New share labels, but the contact permission prompt and picker can look different from Android. See the iPhone and iPad version of Google’s instructions at Google Maps Help: Share your real-time location with others in Google Maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a duration deliberately

Do not skip the duration screen. Select the interval that matches the reason for sharing, then check the displayed expiry before tapping Share. A short trip may need only the time required to arrive; a family member waiting for a longer journey may need a longer interval. The on-screen choices and availability can vary by account, region and device, so rely on the value shown in your app rather than assuming a default.

Share with someone who does not have a Google Account

Use the link-sharing option in the New share flow and send the generated link through your preferred messaging app. Google says a person without a Google Account can use that link to see your real-time location for up to 24 hours. Link access is therefore practical for a visitor, client or other person who is not in your Google Contacts, but it is not an indefinite share. Send the complete link, and tell the recipient that anyone who obtains it may be able to open the shared view during its active period.

For direct sharing beyond 24 hours, the recipient needs a Gmail account. If the app will not offer a longer direct period, verify the age information associated with the account and check whether the recipient is using Gmail.

Stop a Google Maps share early

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Location sharing.
  4. Tap the recipient whose access you want to end.
  5. Tap Stop.

Stopping the share removes that person’s ongoing access before the selected expiry time. If several people are listed, open each active entry and stop the ones that are no longer needed. Ending one recipient’s access does not necessarily end another recipient’s share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Share trip progress while navigating

Trip progress is a separate Google Maps option for a journey. It is better than an open-ended location share when the recipient only needs updates until you reach a destination. It also gives context: the recipient sees where you are in relation to the destination and the estimated arrival time.

  1. Set a destination in Google Maps.
  2. Start navigation by car, on foot or by bicycle.
  3. Swipe up on the navigation information card.
  4. Choose Share trip progress.
  5. Select the recipient and tap Share.

Maps shares the destination, estimated arrival time and current location. Sharing ends automatically when you arrive or when navigation stops. To end it sooner, open the navigation information card and tap Stop sharing. If you start a new route later, treat it as a new trip and confirm the recipient again rather than assuming the earlier trip share remains active.

Trip progress is not the same as selecting a long Location sharing duration. It is tied to active navigation, so stopping navigation also ends the automatic trip update. If the recipient needs to continue seeing your position after arrival, start a separate Location sharing session with an explicit duration.

Waze and Google Maps compared

Capability Waze Google Maps
Current spot or place Send Location sends the current map position, a saved place or a place from navigation history. You can share a current location through Location sharing, or send a place using Maps’ normal sharing controls.
Continuous real-time tracking Not established by the cited Waze help instructions. Location sharing is designed for real-time sharing with a chosen duration.
Duration control The documented Send Location action does not offer a live-sharing duration. The sharer selects a duration; a link recipient without a Google Account can view the real-time location for up to 24 hours.
Navigation-tied updates The documented current-location action is not described as navigation-tied tracking. Share trip progress runs during active navigation and stops on arrival or when navigation ends.
Recipient requirements Choose a sending method on the phone; requirements depend on that app. Direct sharing uses a Google Contact and Gmail address. A non-Google recipient can receive a link for up to 24 hours.
How access ends The sent place is a message or shared item rather than a documented live session. Location sharing ends at the selected expiry or when you tap Stop; trip progress ends on arrival or when navigation stops.

The practical conclusion is simple: Waze is suitable for sending a point or destination, while Google Maps is the documented choice for an updating location feed. Sending a Google Maps place to Waze changes navigation; it does not turn Waze into a live-location service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a Google Maps recipient can see

Before you tap Share, make sure the recipient and duration are correct. Google says a recipient can find:

  • Your name and profile photo.
  • Your recent device location, including when Google apps are not currently open.
  • Your device’s battery level and whether it is charging.
  • Your arrival or departure time if the recipient creates a Location Sharing notification for you.

This means a recipient may see more than a moving dot. Explain the visibility to anyone whose location you share, particularly when sending a link outside your Google Contacts. A link can be forwarded, so treat it as access to your real-time view for the period shown in Maps.

Location sharing is controlled by the sharer. Review the active entries under Profile picture or initial → Location sharing and stop any share you no longer need. If a person says the share is still visible, reopen that list and confirm the recipient’s entry is marked stopped or expired. For a trip-progress share, use the separate Stop sharing control on the navigation information card.

Prepare before you send

  • Confirm the account: Make sure Maps is signed in to the Google Account you intend to use.
  • Confirm the person: Check the displayed name or Gmail address; do not rely only on a contact’s position in the list.
  • Confirm the time: Read the duration or link expiry on the final screen.
  • Confirm the method: Use Waze’s phone workflow, especially when the phone is connected to Android Auto or CarPlay.
  • Explain what is shared: Tell the recipient whether they are receiving a single place, trip progress or real-time location.
  • Plan the stop: Know where the Location sharing or Stop sharing control is before you begin a trip.

Limits, eligibility and troubleshooting

The duration is shorter than expected

Availability can depend on region, account age requirements and Google Workspace administrator settings. Google also advises verifying your age when you cannot share directly for more than 24 hours. For longer direct sharing, the recipient must have a Gmail account. If a work or school account blocks the feature, an administrator policy may be responsible rather than a phone setting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check the duration displayed in the app instead of inferring it from a previous share. A link sent to a non-Google account is limited to up to 24 hours even if you expected an ongoing account-to-account share.

The recipient cannot open the share

  • Confirm that you sent the complete link and that it has not expired.
  • For direct sharing, check that the person’s Gmail address is saved in Google Contacts.
  • If Maps requested contact permission, review the phone’s app permissions and allow contacts access if you want direct selection.
  • Ask the recipient to open the link in a current browser or Google Maps app and verify that mobile data or Wi-Fi is available.
  • Resend only after checking the recipient and duration; creating a new link does not prove that an earlier link was sent to the intended person.

The map does not show a fresh position

A device can report an older location when it has weak connectivity, restricted location permission, battery-saving limits or poor satellite reception. Have the sharer check the phone’s Location setting, Maps permission and network connection. The recipient may still see the last recent device location rather than a new point until the phone can report again. This is different from Waze’s Send Location message, which is a selected map point and is not expected to update as the sender moves.

Contacts do not appear

For direct Google Maps sharing, verify that the recipient’s Gmail address is stored in Google Contacts and that Maps has the requested contacts permission. If you do not want to grant contacts access, use the link option where available and send it through your own messaging app. Remember that a link recipient without a Google Account can view the real-time location for up to 24 hours.

The app labels look different

Google and Waze can change interface labels, and Android, iPhone and iPad layouts are not identical. Look for the profile picture or initial, Location sharing, New share, Send Location or Share trip progress. Confirm the selected person and expiry time on the final screen instead of assuming the default. If an option is missing, account age, region or a Workspace administrator setting may limit availability.

Sending a Google Maps place to Waze

Google Maps can pass a place to Waze so Waze can start or change navigation. That is a destination-transfer feature, not a way to broadcast your live position. It answers “navigate to this place in Waze,” not “let this person follow me.”

Waze documents Android and iPhone/iPad workflows for this handoff. Its current instructions say the cross-app workflow is unsupported on Android Automotive and CarPlay. For the Android process, see Share a location with Waze from Google Maps; for iPhone and iPad, see Share a location with Waze from Google Maps. Use Google Maps Location sharing separately if a person needs to follow you rather than receive a destination.

Privacy and safety practices

Share only with the person who needs the information and for no longer than necessary. A direct share identifies you by name and profile photo and can expose recent device location and battery status. A link is convenient for someone without a Google Account, but it should be handled like a private access token: send it through a trusted channel and avoid posting it in a public group.

When sharing from a parked car, prepare the message before driving. Waze specifically directs users to perform sharing from the phone rather than the car interface. If a trip changes, stop the old Google Maps share and create a new one with the correct recipient or duration. At the end of a journey, check Location sharing rather than relying solely on the expected expiry.

Frequently asked questions

Does Waze share my live location?

Waze’s documented current-location action taps the arrow or blue dot and then Send Location. It sends the map location or a selected place. Those instructions do not establish continuous live tracking. Use Google Maps Location sharing if the recipient must see movement over time.

Can I send a Waze location to someone who is not using Waze?

Yes. After tapping Send Location, choose an available messaging or email method on the phone. The recipient receives the location through that method; they do not need the Waze interface for the basic message, although the exact display depends on the app used to send it.

What is the fastest way to share where I am right now?

In Waze, tap the current-position arrow or blue dot, tap Send Location, and choose the recipient. In Google Maps, use Location sharing if you want the position to continue updating; do not confuse a one-time place message with a live share.

Can someone without a Google Account see my Google Maps location?

Yes. Choose the link-sharing option in New share and send the generated link. Google says the link can expose your real-time location for up to 24 hours. For direct sharing beyond 24 hours, the recipient needs a Gmail account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop Google Maps from sharing?

Open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the recipient and tap Stop. For trip progress, open the navigation information card and tap Stop sharing. Check the active list if you shared with more than one person.

What does Google Maps reveal to a location-sharing recipient?

Google says the recipient can find your name and photo, recent device location even when Google apps are not open, battery power and charging status, and arrival or departure time if they set a Location Sharing notification.

Why can I not select a longer sharing period?

Region, account age requirements and Google Workspace administrator settings can affect availability. Google advises verifying your age when direct sharing for more than 24 hours is unavailable. A recipient also needs a Gmail account for longer direct sharing; a link to a non-Google account lasts up to 24 hours.

Does sending a Google Maps place to Waze share my position?

No. The cross-app feature transfers a destination so Waze can start or change navigation. It does not broadcast your live position. Use Google Maps Location sharing or trip progress for that purpose.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

A quick decision checklist

  • One-time “I’m here”: tap the Waze arrow or blue dot, then Send Location.
  • Saved destination: open Waze’s search bar, choose Saved, open the place’s more-options menu and tap Send location.
  • Place from history: swipe up in Waze, long-press the place, tap Send location and choose a method.
  • Continuous sharing: use Google Maps Location sharing, select the person and verify the duration.
  • During a trip: start navigation in Google Maps and use Share trip progress.
  • No Google Account recipient: send a Google Maps link, knowing Google limits that link-based real-time view to up to 24 hours.
  • Finished sharing: open Google Maps’ Location sharing, select the recipient and tap Stop.
  • Using a car interface: disconnect from Android Auto or CarPlay and share from the phone when following Waze’s documented workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Waze live-location sharing continuous?

No continuous tracking is established by Waze’s documented Send Location instructions. They send the current map position or a selected place. Use Google Maps Location sharing for an updating feed.

Can I share Google Maps location with someone without a Google Account?

Yes. Send a link from the New share flow. Google says the link can show your real-time location for up to 24 hours.

How do I stop sharing in Google Maps?

Open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the recipient and tap Stop. For trip progress, use Stop sharing on the navigation information card.

What can a Google Maps recipient see?

They may see your name and photo, recent device location, battery level and charging state, plus arrival or departure time if they create a Location Sharing notification.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Share trip progress different from Location sharing?

Trip progress is tied to active navigation and ends when you arrive or stop navigation. Location sharing uses a duration you select and can continue independently of a particular route.

The Bottom Line

For a one-time map point, use Waze’s arrow or blue dot → Send Location. For an updating position, use Google Maps → Location sharing, select the recipient and verify the duration. For journey-only updates, use Share trip progress; it ends on arrival or when navigation stops. A link can reach someone without a Google Account for up to 24 hours, and you can end any active Google Maps share from the Location sharing screen.
