Choose the connection that brings internet to your computer, then select how nearby devices will connect. The exact options depend on your operating system and network hardware.
What it means to make a PC act like a router
Internet sharing lets a computer serve as a gateway for devices connected to it. Microsoft describes Windows Internet Connection Sharing as providing gateway functions such as name resolution and DHCP for a small private network; its policy documentation says ICS requires at least two network connections. That explains the basic role, but does not establish that a computer hotspot matches a dedicated router’s availability, performance or features. How to share internet from Windows 10 or 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
- Under Share my internet connection from, choose the connection the PC uses to get online. Microsoft lists Wi-Fi, Ethernet and cellular as possible sources.
- Under Share over, choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Microsoft says Wi-Fi is usually faster and is the default.
- Open Properties if you want to change the hotspot name, password or band, then turn on Mobile hotspot.
- On each client device, select the hotspot network and enter its password, or scan its QR code if available.
On Windows 11, you can also open Quick Settings and use the Mobile hotspot quick action. If the PC is sharing a cellular connection, connected devices use data from the PC’s cellular plan. Microsoft’s Windows hotspot instructions apply to Windows 10 and 11. Note that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for it.
How to share a Mac’s internet connection
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
- Enable Internet Sharing, then click Configure.
- Choose the internet source under Share your connection from, then select the destination interface or port under To devices using.
- For Wi-Fi sharing, set a network name, security option and password, then click Done.
Apple recommends WPA3 Personal when all client computers support it, or WPA2/WPA3 Personal when some clients support only WPA2. Apple also warns that using the same port for the internet input and local network can disrupt the network in some cases. Its example is a cable-modem setup that could unintentionally affect other ISP customers and lead the ISP to terminate service; this is a conditional warning, not an outcome of every Internet Sharing setup. How to create a Wi-Fi hotspot in Ubuntu desktop
- Open the system menu, expand Wi-Fi, and select All Networks.
- Open the menu in the top-right corner and select Turn On Wi-Fi Hotspot….
- Use the network name and security key generated by the system to connect other devices. A phone or tablet can join by scanning the displayed QR code.
Ubuntu’s documented hotspot can share an internet connection configured on another interface, such as Ethernet or cellular. Its documentation also says: “A single wireless adapter can connect to or create only one network at a time.” If the computer is already connected to Wi-Fi, Ubuntu may prompt you to disconnect before creating the hotspot; do not assume one adapter can receive internet over Wi-Fi while broadcasting a separate hotspot. Check these things before turning on a hotspot
- Identify the upstream connection: Is the computer getting internet through Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular?
- Choose how client devices will connect: Windows offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; macOS lets you select a destination interface; the cited Ubuntu desktop flow creates a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Confirm the required interfaces are available: The operating system must expose a sharing feature, and the computer needs the connections required for the chosen source and destination.
- Set credentials and suitable security: Use the name and password controls where offered. On a Mac, select the strongest option supported by all client computers.
- Check Wi-Fi adapter capabilities if Wi-Fi-to-Wi-Fi sharing fails: Ubuntu documents its one-network-at-a-time limit for a single adapter; do not apply that specific limit to every operating system or device.
- For a Mac, consider the network path: Avoid using the same port for internet input and local sharing without understanding Apple’s stated potential consequences.
If your existing hardware cannot host the desired hotspot, a second wireless interface may be relevant, but verify that it supports access-point mode and works with your operating system before buying one. A wired adapter or cable may also be needed if the computer lacks the port required for an Ethernet source.
