To share a digital PS4 game with another local user, sign in to the PlayStation account that bought it and activate this console as that account’s primary PS4. Then switch to the other user account and open the game. The purchase stays with the buyer’s account; primary-console activation lets other users on that PS4 use the purchased application.
Activate the PS4 on the purchasing account
- On the PS4, sign in to the account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Select Activate. Sony says a first PS4 may already be activated automatically. If another PS4 is currently primary for this account, deactivate it before switching. See Sony’s primary PS4 activation guide.
- Switch to the other local user account and open the game. Sony’s rule is that anyone using the account’s primary PS4 can use applications purchased from PlayStation Store.
Which account needs to activate the console?
The account that owns the digital game must activate this PS4 as its primary console. If another person’s account bought the game, that account—not the account trying to play it—needs to be activated here. The game remains associated with the purchasing account.

What can and cannot be shared
Purchased PlayStation Store games
Other users of the primary PS4 can use applications purchased from PlayStation Store by the activating account. The purchase is not transferred to them.

PlayStation Plus benefits
Plus sharing is separate from sharing a purchased game. Sony allows selected benefits on the primary PS4, including online multiplayer (subject to parental-control settings), downloaded Monthly Plus games, qualifying games purchased with a Plus discount, and catalog titles depending on the membership plan. Other users do not gain the ability to redeem Plus games, use online storage, auto-download patches, buy products at Plus prices, or access early time-limited trials. If the game is locked or unavailable
- Confirm that the account which purchased the game is signed in and has this PS4 activated as its primary console.
- Confirm that the game was purchased by that account.
- If the account’s primary PS4 is another console, deactivate that console before activating this one. If you cannot access it, Sony says you can remotely deactivate all devices through Account Management; remote deactivation is available once every six months.
If these checks do not resolve an account or licensing error, contact PlayStation Support rather than changing unrelated settings.
Keep account credentials private
Sharing console access does not require giving another user the purchasing account’s password. Sony advises: “Never share your account details with anyone else.”
