To send an iPhone photo nearby, use AirDrop; to share it remotely, create an iCloud Link in Photos. In either case, open Options in the share sheet and choose Current to prevent a format conversion. Turn on All Photos Data if the recipient needs the original file, edit history, and metadata. For a group album, check the devices’ operating-system versions: Apple describes different Shared Albums resolution behavior for version 26 or earlier and version 27 or later.
Choose the sharing method that fits

Send a full-quality photo with AirDrop
- Open Photos and select one or more photos.
- Tap Share, then Options.
- Choose Current to prevent a format conversion.
- Turn on All Photos Data if the recipient needs the original file, edit history, and metadata.
- Return to the share sheet, choose AirDrop, and select the nearby recipient.
Apple’s Share photos and videos on iPhone guide says: “Send all photo data: Turn on All Photos Data to share the original file with edit history and metadata; the recipient can view and modify the current version (available with AirDrop and iCloud links only).” Apple’s guides are versioned, so labels and availability can depend on the installed OS.

Share remotely with an iCloud Link
- In Photos, select the photo or photos and tap Share.
- Open Options and turn on iCloud Link. If the recipient needs the original data and the option is available, also turn on All Photos Data.
- Copy or send the link through the recipient’s preferred communication app.
- Ask the recipient to view or download the items within 30 days.
An iCloud Link is a URL for viewing or downloading the shared photos or videos. Treat it as forwardable: Apple’s sharing instructions do not establish that this link is locked to one recipient. For a long video, Apple also describes sending an iCloud Link through Messages, Mail, or another app; Mail Drop is another large-video attachment option, with content available to recipients for 30 days. Set the format and decide what data to include
Current, Automatic, and Most Compatible
In the share sheet’s Options, choose Current when preventing a format conversion is the priority. Automatic selects what Apple considers the best format for the destination. Most Compatible may convert a photo to JPEG or a video to MOV, which can help with destinations that do not handle the original format. The option controls format conversion; use All Photos Data separately when the recipient needs the original file data.

Original data can include sensitive details
Apple says shared photos and videos can include associated metadata such as date, time, location, device, and captions. The share options let you turn off Location. Review those details before sending, especially when enabling All Photos Data or sharing a link beyond a trusted recipient.
Shared Albums have version-dependent resolution
Apple’s current support pages describe a clear version split. On iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, or macOS version 27 or later, Apple says Shared Albums store photos and videos in iCloud in their original formats at full resolution. On version 26 or earlier, Apple says photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, panoramas can be up to 5400 pixels wide, and videos are delivered at up to 720p. These older-version limits should not be applied to version 27-or-later devices.

Apple’s page on Shared Albums also says that, on version 26 or earlier, the album uploads a copy to iCloud and does not count against iCloud storage; downloaded content may not retain the same information as the original. Shared Albums support formats including HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, and TIFF, with platform caveats, as well as special formats such as Live Photos, slo-mo, and time-lapse subject to version and platform restrictions. Apple notes that not all features are available in every country or region, so check the support guidance for the device’s installed version and location.
Do not confuse sharing with iCloud Photos or Shared Photo Library
iCloud Photos syncs a person’s library to signed-in devices where it is enabled; edits and deletions sync across those devices. It is not the same as creating a shareable iCloud Link. Apple’s iCloud Shared Photo Library is a collaborative library that can include the organizer and up to five other people, and its content counts toward the organizer’s iCloud storage. Shared Albums are a separate feature, with the storage treatment described above for version 26 or earlier.

Keep an offline copy
If you need an export independent of a link or album, Apple’s iPhone sharing guide points to transferring photos and videos to external storage. Compatibility depends on the specific iPhone and drive, so check those requirements before relying on a particular device.
