To transfer a file over the internet, upload it to a trusted cloud-storage or file-transfer service, then share the recipient link or invitation. Use a shared folder when people need ongoing access or collaboration; use a one-time transfer link to deliver a finished file; use SFTP when uploading to a website or managed server.
What does transferring a file over the internet mean?
It means moving digital data from one device or server to another over a network. In the common send-to-someone workflow, you upload a file to a service, which stores it and lets the recipient download it or work with it. The recipient usually gets access through an invitation or a share link.

Choose a method for the job
| Method | Best fit | Check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud storage folder or share | Ongoing access, synchronization, or collaboration | Permissions, whether recipients need accounts, storage quota, link access, collaboration tools, and encryption scope |
| One-time transfer link | Delivering a finished file for download | Maximum file size, link expiration or retention, download access, and available password or link controls |
| SFTP client and server | Uploading files to a website or managed server account | Whether the host supports SFTP, the credentials and destination directory it provides, and server permissions |
| HTTPS website upload or download | Simple browser-based transfers offered by a service | Service trust, file-size rules, account requirements, recipient controls, and retention |
These are different workflows, not a ranking of providers. There is no universal file-size limit or retention period: both depend on the service and sometimes the plan. Check the current terms for the service you choose.

Send a file to another person
- Choose a trusted service. Use cloud storage if the recipient needs continuing access or collaboration. For a finished file that only needs to be delivered, a transfer service may be a better fit.
- Upload the file. Open the service and follow its upload controls. For example, Google Drive’s sharing guidance covers its file-sharing workflow.
- Set access deliberately. Invite specific people when access should be restricted or collaboration is needed. If you create a link, review who can open it and whether the link allows downloading, editing, or other actions.
- Review expiration and protection. Check whether the link expires, whether access can be limited further, and what encryption the provider says applies to the file and connection.
- Send the link through an appropriate channel. Tell the recipient what file to expect. Avoid posting a link to sensitive material publicly.
- Confirm the recipient can use it. Check account and permission requirements if the recipient cannot open or download the file.
For example, Dropbox says a recipient can download a Transfer using a shareable link without a Dropbox account; its available customization options vary by plan. Check Dropbox Transfer’s current documentation for current access and feature details.

Upload a file to a website or server
For a server account, use the connection details supplied by the hosting provider and an SFTP client. The client connects to the server and typically shows local files alongside the remote server’s folders, so you can choose a file and upload it to the correct destination. MDN’s guide to uploading files to a web server explains the process. Confirm that the host supports SFTP and check its instructions for the destination directory and permissions.
Do not assume FTP and SFTP are interchangeable. FTP is an older protocol that MDN describes as insecure; use SFTP or another secure method rather than sending credentials or files over plain FTP. See MDN’s FTP glossary entry.

What HTTPS and encryption protect
HTTPS is HTTP secured with TLS. TLS protects data as it travels between a client and a server through encryption, integrity checks, and authentication. MDN’s TLS overview identifies TLS 1.3 as the current version and TLS 1.2 as still in use (page accessed October 7, 2026).
Protection in transit is not the same as end-to-end encryption, and it does not by itself control who can access a file after it reaches a provider’s servers. Check both the sharing permissions and the provider’s description of how it protects stored files. For instance, Google says Drive data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Its additional client-side encryption requires a Workspace account and administrator enablement; it is not available to every ordinary account. Google says it cannot decrypt files protected with that option. See Google’s client-side encryption documentation.

Providers describe different protection features and scopes. Dropbox documents encryption at rest and SSL/TLS in transit, and describes end-to-end encryption as a feature available to users; details are on its security overview. WeTransfer says its files are encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 and at rest using AES-256; see its file-protection explanation, updated October 2, 2026. These are provider statements about their services, not independent audits of a particular transfer.

What to check before choosing a service
- Size: Confirm the maximum upload or transfer size for your service and plan.
- Recipient access: Find out whether recipients need an account and whether a link can be opened by anyone who receives it or only by invited people.
- Duration: Check link expiration, file retention, and what happens after either ends.
- Permissions: Distinguish download access from ongoing access or editing rights, and limit access to the intended people.
- Security: Read what the provider says about encryption in transit, encryption at rest, and any end-to-end or client-side option.
- Collaboration: Choose a shared folder when people need to keep working with the same files; choose a transfer link for a completed delivery.
