Windows has three different ways to share files: use a network share when another computer needs ongoing access on the same trusted network, Nearby sharing for a quick transfer to a PC close by, or OneDrive when someone needs access over the internet. For a local folder share in Windows 11, start in File Explorer with Give access to > Specific people.
Which Windows file-sharing method should you use?
| Method | Use it when | How access works | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network folder sharing | The recipient’s PC is on the same home or workplace network and needs continuing access. | Grant access to a network user; the recipient opens the share or maps it as a drive. | Use a trusted network and limit access to intended users. |
| Nearby sharing | You want to send a file, photo, or link to a nearby supported Windows PC. | Make the device discoverable to your own devices or everyone nearby, then have the recipient accept. | With “Everyone nearby,” your PC name and Bluetooth MAC address are visible to nearby devices. |
| OneDrive sharing | The recipient needs access over the internet. | Send an invitation or create a sharing link for a file stored in OneDrive. | Choose the link audience and access deliberately; this is cloud sharing, not a LAN folder share. |
Microsoft’s network-sharing guide covers local-area-network sharing and points to OneDrive for internet sharing. Its Nearby sharing guide explains transfers between nearby Windows devices.

How do you share a folder over a network in Windows 11?
Both computers must be connected to the same network, and the receiving account must have permission to access the shared folder. On the PC that holds the folder:
- Confirm the computer is connected to the same trusted home or workplace network as the receiving PC.
- Open File Explorer, right-click the file or folder, and choose Show more options if needed. Select Give access to > Specific people.
- Choose the intended network user and share the item. Microsoft also documents an Everyone option, but it allows all network users access; use narrower access when suitable.
- If the receiving computer cannot find the host under Network in File Explorer, follow the prompt to turn on network discovery and file sharing. Set the network profile to Private only if you trust the network and its devices.
- On the receiving PC, open the share from File Explorer’s Network view or enter its network path. The host must be on, and the connecting account must have permission.
Microsoft’s instructions for sharing over a network cover these File Explorer options. Sharing a folder makes its files available through that folder; it does not make every file on the host PC available.

How do you map a network drive?
Mapping a drive gives a shared folder a drive letter on the receiving computer, making it easier to return to. It does not create a separate sharing service or grant permission by itself.
- In File Explorer, select This PC > Map network drive.
- Choose an available drive letter and enter or browse to the shared folder’s network path.
- If you want the drive to reconnect when you sign in, select Reconnect at sign-in, then select Finish.
If mapping fails, check the path and confirm that the account you are using can open the share.

How do you stop sharing a folder or check what is shared?
On the hosting PC, right-click the shared item in File Explorer and select Give access to > Remove access to revoke access. To view network shares on the current computer, enter \localhost in File Explorer. A folder inside your user profile may appear alongside other files there; its appearance does not mean that every file shown is shared. The Remove access menu can also appear for folders that are not currently shared, so that option alone does not confirm an active share.
How do you send a file to a nearby Windows PC?
- On both PCs, open Settings > System > Nearby sharing and enable the feature. Choose whether to receive from your own devices or from everyone nearby.
- On the sending PC, use File Explorer’s Share command and select the receiving device.
- On the receiving PC, accept the transfer with Save or Save & open.
Microsoft says Nearby sharing can send documents, photos, and links using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. A PC running the latest Windows 11 can use Wi-Fi when the receiving Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC is on the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise, the transfer can use Bluetooth. Windows 10 devices need version 1803 or later. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing guidance notes that Wi-Fi can be faster than Bluetooth in applicable troubleshooting circumstances, but it publishes no like-for-like speed benchmark.

How do you share with someone over the internet?
Use OneDrive rather than trying to make a home or workplace network share reachable from the public internet. Store the file in OneDrive, then use File Explorer’s OneDrive sharing options to create a link or send an invitation to selected recipients. Choose who can use the link and what access they receive. Microsoft describes this route in its Windows file-sharing overview.

Windows file sharing commonly uses Server Message Block (SMB), which Microsoft defines as “a network file sharing and data fabric protocol.” Microsoft warns that SMB traffic to or from the internet is generally unlikely to be legitimate, with cloud services such as Azure Files as a possible exception. Do not open SMB ports to the public internet as a workaround; Microsoft’s SMB security guidance explains the risks and perimeter protections.

In Windows 11, a Public network profile is the recommended default: it hides the PC from other devices and does not support file or printer sharing. A Private profile allows discoverability and sharing, and should be used only on networks whose devices you trust. Microsoft explains the distinction in Essential network settings and tasks in Windows.

For a trusted network where you intend to share, check that Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled for the relevant profile. Do not change the profile to Private on an unfamiliar public network simply to make a PC visible.
What should you check if another PC cannot find or open the share?
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm both PCs are on the same network and that the hosting PC is powered on.
- On a trusted network only, confirm the host uses the Private profile and that Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled for that profile.
- Check that you shared the intended folder and that the account connecting from the other PC has permission.
- Install available Windows and relevant network-driver updates, then check the share path again.
- For a mapped drive, verify the path and access permissions. For Nearby sharing, enable it on both PCs and check Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; Wi-Fi transfers require the supported Windows 11 sender and same private Wi-Fi network described above.
Microsoft’s network-sharing troubleshooting also lists turning off password-protected sharing and starting the Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services automatically. These changes can broaden access or alter network exposure, so they are not universal first-line fixes; follow organizational policy and use the least-permissive settings that solve the problem. Do not disable the firewall or expose SMB to the internet as a default troubleshooting step.
Windows 10 file sharing: legacy guidance
Windows 10 uses similar File Explorer sharing concepts, but its support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Treat Windows 10 steps as legacy instructions and review Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing information and support-status guidance before relying on an unsupported PC for network access.
