To watch a YouTube video in 1080p, open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, and select 1080p if it appears. On a phone or tablet, tap Advanced first to see individual resolution choices. YouTube can only offer 1080p when the video has a 1080p source and your device or browser supports the available format.
How do I change YouTube quality to 1080p?

YouTube’s mobile quality menu may also offer Auto, Higher picture quality, and Data saver. These are quality preferences, not guaranteed selections of a specific resolution.

How to make 1080p the mobile default
You can set separate video-quality preferences for mobile networks and Wi-Fi. On Android or iPhone/iPad, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Video quality preferences. Choose the preference you want for each connection type. A manual resolution or the Advanced option may not be offered for every video.

Why is 1080p not showing on YouTube?
The Quality menu only lists options supported by the video and your playback setup. YouTube says quality can depend on connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload, and browser support for newer formats. Some high-quality formats, including 1080p, may not be available on devices that do not support newer compression technology such as VP9. A video uploaded only in standard definition cannot be made into a genuine 1080p source by changing playback settings.
- Check the source: If the uploader did not provide a 1080p version, that resolution will not appear.
- Choose a resolution manually: Open Settings > Quality; on mobile, check Advanced for the resolution list.
- Consider device or browser support: Available formats can differ by playback device and browser.
- Check the connection if quality drops: YouTube adjusts stream quality to viewing conditions, and an unstable or slower connection can lead to a lower-quality stream or buffering.
Selecting 1080p requests that quality when it is available; it cannot override a lower-resolution upload, device compatibility limits, or playback conditions.

Manual 1080p, Auto, and mobile quality preferences
Manual selection gives you control over the resolution when YouTube offers it. Auto lets YouTube adjust quality to conditions, including connection speed and screen or player size. On mobile, Higher picture quality favors picture quality and uses more data; it can take longer to start or buffer more often. Data saver lowers picture quality and can start faster.
For a standard 16:9 frame, 1080p means 1920 × 1080 pixels. YouTube defines HD as 720 to 1080 vertical lines.

What 1080p Premium means
1080p Premium is not a higher resolution number. YouTube describes it as an enhanced-bitrate version of 1080p, available to YouTube Premium members for eligible videos uploaded in 1080p. It is not offered for live streams, Shorts, or uploads at resolutions above or below 1080p. Standard 1080p and 1080p Premium therefore differ in bitrate and eligibility, not in the 1080p resolution label.
