How to Set YouTube Live Stream Ingest Settings for a Google Cloud VM

Set up a Google Cloud VM encoder for YouTube Live with the right ingest settings, stream key, outbound network path, and pre-event test.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a live encoder feed from a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM to YouTube, copy the event’s stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure the encoder to use YouTube-compatible ingest settings, and confirm that the VM can sustain the outgoing stream. Prefer RTMPS, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and leave at least 20% network headroom above the stream bitrate. Test the complete path privately or unlisted before broadcasting publicly.

What the ingest settings control

Ingest settings define what your encoder sends from the VM to YouTube: the stream protocol, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. They do not determine every viewer’s playback format; YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer renditions.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for codec-specific details and HDR requirements before configuring a specialized workflow: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose the encoder’s video settings

Codec, resolution, and frame rate

Choose a codec your encoder supports and YouTube accepts, then select the resolution and frame rate appropriate to the content and the VM’s real-time encoding capacity. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate and more processing. YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to set these manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under stream resolution in the stream setup.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations include these representative combinations. They are operational guidance, not guarantees of image quality or network performance; use the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. The YouTube Help page does not show a publication year for these values.

H.264 ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

The same YouTube page gives separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265. Do not apply the H.264 figures in the table to those codecs. It also notes that 4K/2160p streams use normal latency; check the current page for specialized HDR guidance.

Bitrate and keyframes

  • Set the encoder to CBR for standard encoder-based streaming.
  • Use a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. A value suitable for 1080p30 is not a universal setting for 1080p60 or 4K.
  • Allow at least 20% bandwidth headroom above the planned stream bitrate. For example, a 14 Mbps stream needs a sustained outbound path of at least 16.8 Mbps to meet that headroom target. If sending multiple feeds, allow headroom above their combined bitrate.

YouTube cautions that upload bandwidth can be lower than download bandwidth. Verify the VM’s outbound path rather than relying on a download-speed result or a provider’s headline network maximum. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its live streaming tips.

Audio

Use AAC or MP3 audio, both listed by YouTube for live ingest. Include audio in the test even if the event is mostly visual: a valid preview does not by itself confirm that the encoder is sending the intended audio feed.

Set up the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings on the VM. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See Manage live stream settings.

Use the stream URL and key for the selected event rather than substituting an address from another setup. Do not publish the key in logs, screenshots, scripts shared outside your team, or public configuration files.

Check Google Cloud networking and VM capacity

Allow outbound connectivity

The VM must be able to initiate a connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A VM with an external IP can communicate with external systems; a VM without one needs another configured outbound route, such as Cloud NAT. Google Cloud’s default VPC firewall rules allow egress and block ingress, but custom VPC rules or organization-level firewall policies can change that. Check the effective egress policy for this VM; opening inbound ports is not required just to send an outbound stream.

See Google Cloud’s VPC firewall rules overview for firewall behavior and configuration context.

Size for encoding and sustained egress

A machine type’s maximum egress rate is a ceiling, not a promise that your workload will sustain that throughput. Google Cloud bandwidth limits depend on machine type and routing; per-flow limits and project-level internet egress quotas can also apply. Consult the current Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation for the VM family and route you intend to use.

There is no defensible single VM size for every stream: the required capacity depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder implementation, region, network path, and whether you need redundancy. Before choosing a machine type, confirm that the encoder can encode the source in real time, then verify sustained outbound throughput and applicable quota limits under the expected load. Keep the YouTube-recommended 20% headroom.

Run a private end-to-end test

  1. Start the encoder using the event’s stream URL and key, the selected codec and format, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  2. Use a private or unlisted test event before the public broadcast. Include representative motion and the audio sources expected during the event.
  3. Confirm that the YouTube preview appears and review the stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
  4. Check that the VM sustains real-time encoding and outbound throughput for the chosen bitrate, with headroom, rather than relying on a brief connection or a network ceiling.
  5. Keep YouTube’s stream-health indicators visible while broadcasting so you can respond if they report a problem.

For YouTube’s guidance on preparing and monitoring a live stream, see Live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common ingest problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Wrong stream URL or key, unavailable outbound route, or restrictive egress policy Recheck the selected event’s URL and key; verify the VM has an external IP or another outbound path such as Cloud NAT; inspect effective VPC and organization-level egress rules.
Connection drops or stream health degrades Insufficient sustained upload capacity, egress constraints, or a workload that cannot keep up Check sustained VM egress and project or per-flow limits; reduce the bitrate or stream format if needed, and preserve at least 20% headroom.
Video is choppy or the encoder falls behind The VM’s encoder cannot process the selected source format in real time, or the outgoing path cannot sustain the bitrate Verify encoder workload and outbound throughput separately. Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the VM or route cannot maintain the chosen settings.
Preview or playback has unexpected quality The encoder’s ingest format differs from the intended settings, or the chosen bitrate does not suit its codec and format Check the encoder’s actual output settings against YouTube’s guidance for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Remember that YouTube transcodes ingest for viewers.
Audio is missing or not as expected The encoder is not sending the intended audio source or a supported audio codec Check the selected audio input and confirm the encoder is using AAC or MP3; include audio in another representative test.
The stream key may have been exposed The key was shared or placed somewhere others can access Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and replace it in the VM encoder settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a different, simpler workflow: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not send a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
