How to Set YouTube Live Bitrate for a 1080p Loop Stream

YouTube recommends different 1080p Live bitrates for 30 and 60 fps—and for H.264 versus H.265 or AV1. Use the matching setting and test stream health before looping video.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1080p YouTube Live stream, set bitrate according to the video’s actual frame rate and the codec you send to YouTube. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps (10,000 kbps) for 1080p30 with AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps (14,000 kbps) with H.264. For 1080p60, it recommends 12 Mbps (12,000 kbps) with AV1 or H.265, or 17 Mbps (17,000 kbps) with H.264. A loop has no separate bitrate setting: use the ordinary live-encoder recommendation matching the stream you send.

Recommended bitrate for 1080p YouTube Live

The figures below are YouTube’s listed video-ingestion bitrates. Choose the row that matches both the codec your encoder sends and the source/output frame rate. The listed minimum is not the recommended target, and meeting a bitrate target does not guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain it.

Stream sent to YouTube YouTube listed minimum YouTube recommended
1080p30, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps (4,000 kbps) 10 Mbps (10,000 kbps)
1080p30, H.264 5 Mbps (5,000 kbps) 14 Mbps (14,000 kbps)
1080p60, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps (4,000 kbps) 12 Mbps (12,000 kbps)
1080p60, H.264 6 Mbps (6,000 kbps) 17 Mbps (17,000 kbps)

For example, 6,000 kbps is the listed minimum—not YouTube’s recommended bitrate—for 1080p60 H.264. It is below the listed minimum for that combination. If you are sending AV1 or H.265 at 1080p60, YouTube lists 4 Mbps as the minimum and 12 Mbps as recommended. “1080p” alone is not enough information to select a bitrate.

Does a looping video need a different bitrate?

No separate loop-stream bitrate is specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance. A pre-recorded video sent as a live stream should use the ordinary recommendation for its ingested resolution, frame rate and codec. A quiet, mostly static image does not change which row applies.

The official guidance does not promise that a stream can run continuously for an unlimited duration or establish special bitrate or uptime rules for loops. Test the intended setup and monitor its stream health while live.

Set up the encoder for a 1080p loop

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select or create a stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. YouTube supports streaming through software and standalone hardware encoders.
  2. Set the video format. Choose 1080p and the actual frame rate of the video you are sending—30 or 60 fps. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to select these manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Live Control Room.
  3. Match the bitrate to the outgoing codec and frame rate. Use the recommended value in the table above, not a value selected solely because the video is 1080p. Confirm whether your encoder is sending H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
  4. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe every 2 seconds; do not set the interval above 4 seconds. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among its encoder settings.
  5. Check the remaining video and audio settings. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its other advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3; for stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Match these settings to the production rather than trying to compensate for audio configuration by changing video bitrate.
  6. Test before the real stream. Check available upload capacity, preview the stream, and test with audio and movement similar to the loop you plan to run. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably support and recommends an upload-speed test. Watch stream-health messages during the test and the live stream.

Check upload capacity and stream health

The recommended bitrate is the video bitrate, not a promise about the total bandwidth your connection needs. Use an upload-speed test and leave room for connection variation rather than treating a result just above the target as proof of a reliable stream. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen quality, select a lower reliable setting and test again.

  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before and during the broadcast.

Troubleshooting bitrate and loop-stream problems

The stream buffers or reports poor health

Likely cause: the connection or encoder cannot sustain the selected video bitrate consistently. What to do: test upload capacity, reduce the output quality or bitrate to a level the connection can reliably support, and run another representative test. Do not assume that a short successful preview guarantees a long stream will remain healthy.

The selected bitrate seems wrong for “1080p”

Likely cause: frame rate or codec was overlooked. What to do: confirm whether the stream is 30 or 60 fps and whether the outgoing codec is H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, then use the matching row. Do not select the 60 fps recommendation for a 30 fps stream merely because both are 1080p.

YouTube receives different settings than expected

Likely cause: automatic detection is enabled, or the encoder’s output differs from the source settings. What to do: check the encoder’s actual output and YouTube’s preview. If you need to set resolution and frame rate manually, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Live Control Room.

The stream starts but the loop’s continuity is uncertain

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not set a loop-specific duration or guarantee unlimited continuous operation. Validate the intended source and monitor stream health; do not infer an uptime guarantee from a successful bitrate test.
