On a Pixel, the lock screen can show notifications in a few different ways—ranging from full content (like message previews) to privacy-protected alerts or hiding notifications entirely. The exact wording varies a bit by Android version, but the controls are consistent across most recent Pixel software.
This guide walks you through the system-wide setting first, then shows how to refine the behavior per app. If your changes don’t seem to “stick,” the troubleshooting section covers the most common reasons on Pixels.

What “preferred notification view” means on Pixel
When people say they want a different notification view on the Pixel lock screen, they’re usually referring to one or more of these controls:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Whether notifications appear on the lock screen at all
- Whether notification content is visible (for example, message previews)
- Whether notifications pop up as “heads-up” alerts while the screen is locked
- Whether specific apps can override your preferences via per-app notification settings
Pixel’s lock screen notification privacy is especially important if you don’t want message text, email subjects, or OTPs visible when your phone is unattended.

Before you change anything: prerequisites and what to identify
Start by confirming which Android version you’re on, because menu text can differ slightly.
- Open Settings → About phone → look for Android version.
- If you’re using a Pixel with the newest software, you’ll likely be on Android 14 or 13.
Also check your current lock state preferences:
- Are you using PIN / Pattern / Password or Face unlock / Fingerprint?
- Are you using Do Not Disturb or Bedtime / Focus routines?
Set your lock screen notification view (system-wide)
This controls how notifications behave for the entire phone, before per-app overrides. Use this first to get the privacy level you want.
Android 14 / Android 13 (Pixel UI)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Lock screen or On the lock screen (wording varies).
- Choose one of these options (exact phrasing can vary by update):
- Show content (you’ll see notification details on the lock screen)
- Hide sensitive content (shows alerts but hides sensitive details like message previews)
- Hide notifications (notifications won’t show on the lock screen)
- Press the back button to save automatically.
After changing this, lock your Pixel (press the power button once) and trigger a test notification from a message app (or ask a friend to send you a text) to confirm the new behavior.
Android 12 (Pixel UI)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Lock screen notifications or On the lock screen.
- Select your preference:
- Show content
- Hide sensitive content
- Don’t show notifications (or similar wording)
Android 12 menus are typically close to the Android 13/14 paths, but the label names may be slightly different depending on Pixel model and update level.
Fine-tune privacy: hide or show notification content
If you choose an option that hides or limits content, Pixel will generally still show that you have a notification (for example, “New message” or an icon), but it won’t reveal the full message text.

- The Pixelsnap Case is designed with soft silicone in bold colors that match your phone, so it feels as good as it looks and hugs every curve of Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro with incredible precision
- It’s designed specifically for Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, so charging capabilities, audio clarity, and signal strength are unaffected[2]; recycled materials make up at least 42% of the case, so it’s made with you and the planet in mind[3]
If your goal is to reduce snooping risk without losing all usefulness, Hide sensitive content is the most common choice. It tends to be a good balance between privacy and quick glance information.
Control how notifications appear: sound, vibration, and heads-up
Lock screen notification view controls what’s visible, but heads-up notifications control whether you get a pop-up alert while the phone is locked. If you see notifications too aggressively, adjust heads-up next.
Turn heads-up notifications on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Heads-up notifications (or a similarly named option).
- Select your preference:
- Off to suppress pop-ups
- On if you want pop-ups for important alerts
Also consider the app-level behavior for messaging and calling apps—many users want content hidden on the lock screen but still want heads-up for calls.
Choose per-app lock screen behavior
System-wide settings are only the baseline. If a particular app is showing too much (or not showing at all), you’ll need to adjust it for that app.
Set lock screen visibility for specific apps
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications (or See all apps).
- Select the app (for example, Messages, Gmail, WhatsApp).
- Find the setting related to lock screen visibility, often labeled as one of these:
- On the lock screen
- Show on lock screen
- Notification visibility
Then choose the option that matches your privacy preference (common choices are “Default,” “Show content,” “Hide sensitive content,” or “Don’t show”).

If you see a Default option, it typically means “use your system-wide lock screen notification setting.”
Block notifications from a specific app (if needed)
If an app is noisy and you don’t want any lock screen alerts from it, disabling notifications for that app is the cleanest solution.
- Go to Settings → Notifications → App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Turn off Allow notifications.
This removes notifications entirely, including on the lock screen.
Common gotchas (and why your changes might not apply)
Do Not Disturb / Bedtime / Focus modes
If Do Not Disturb is active, it can suppress notifications or change how they appear, even when your lock screen settings look correct.
- Open quick settings (swipe down) and check whether a DND or Focus icon is enabled.
- Also check Settings → Do Not Disturb.
Notification snoozing and app notification settings conflicts
Some apps let you snooze notifications or categorize alerts (for example, “important” vs “promotional”). If only one category shows on the lock screen, you may be looking at category-level settings rather than the main toggle.

Lock screen style, security, and “Privacy” behavior
On many Pixel setups, privacy behavior can be influenced by your lock screen state (locked vs unlocked) and whether your phone considers content “sensitive.” Even if you select “Show content,” content may still be reduced for highly sensitive notifications like some authentication messages, depending on Android’s privacy controls.

If your lock screen notifications don’t match your settings, use this order. It’s the fastest path to a fix.
If you can’t find the lock screen notification setting
- Use Settings search: open Settings and search for lock screen or notifications.
- Confirm you’re under Settings → Notifications (not a per-app menu).
- Check for software updates: Settings → System → System update.
Minor UI changes happen between builds, so searching by keyword is usually quicker than hunting through menus.
Recommended Free Tools
If content still shows on the lock screen
- Re-check the system-wide setting under Notifications → Lock screen.
- Check the specific app: verify it isn’t set to show content on the lock screen.
- Lock your phone and wait for the app notification to re-trigger (old notifications may remain on-screen until they expire).
Also test with a new message after changing settings—some notification content only updates on receipt.

If notifications don’t appear at all

- Check whether the app’s notification priority/importance is turned off (some apps offer “silent” toggles).
- Confirm Do Not Disturb / Bedtime isn’t active.
- Restart the phone, then send a test notification again.
Finally, check whether you’ve enabled battery optimizations that limit background activity for that app.
Quick comparison: what each lock screen option typically does
| Lock screen notification option | What you typically see | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Show content | Notification text/previews visible on the lock screen | Speed and convenience when you’re often the only person who sees your phone |
| Hide sensitive content | Alerts visible, but message details and sensitive previews hidden | Most privacy-focused users who still want at-a-glance context |
| Hide notifications / Don’t show notifications | No lock screen notifications (you’ll only see them after unlocking) | Shared spaces, meetings, travel, or whenever you don’t want any lock screen data |
Bottom Line
To set your preferred notification view on a Pixel lock screen, start with the system-wide setting in Settings → Notifications → Lock screen. Then fine-tune privacy and visibility per app when one app behaves differently than the rest.
If changes don’t reflect immediately, re-check Do Not Disturb / Focus modes and test with a new notification after locking your phone.
FAQs
Why do I see message content on my Pixel lock screen even after hiding sensitive notifications?
Most often, the app (like Messages or Gmail) has its own lock screen visibility setting that overrides your system-wide preference. Check that app under Settings → Notifications → app → lock screen visibility.
Will turning off heads-up notifications stop lock screen notifications too?
No. Heads-up notifications control pop-up alerts. Lock screen notifications are governed by the Lock screen notification visibility setting and the app’s notification permissions.
Can I make calls show but hide everything else?
Yes in practice. Set a privacy-focused lock screen option system-wide, then adjust the relevant “Phone” or calling app notification settings per app to ensure calls can still reach you as you want.
Do I need to reboot for lock screen notification changes to apply?
Usually no. Most changes apply instantly, but if you’re testing and nothing changes, send a new test notification and ensure you’re viewing a freshly received alert. A restart can help if the system or an app’s notification service got stuck.
