Set viewport_width and viewport_height on a ScreenshotOne /take request. Both values are pixels; the documented default viewport is 1280 × 1024. These settings determine the browser area used to render the page, so width can change responsive layout. They do not resize the finished image.
Set custom viewport dimensions
Pass the two options as query parameters to the /take endpoint. For example, to render a page at 1440 × 900:

Choose viewport settings for the layout you need
Custom width and height
Use viewport_width and viewport_height when you need a specific browser viewport. Width controls which responsive breakpoints apply and can determine whether navigation, sidebars, or columns appear. Height sets the vertical browser area for ordinary viewport captures.

Viewport size versus output image size
viewport_width and viewport_height control page rendering. By contrast, image_width and image_height resize the resulting screenshot as a thumbnail while preserving its aspect ratio. Choose the viewport options to change the layout; choose image dimensions to constrain the delivered image size. See the ScreenshotOne options reference.
Full-page screenshots
For a full-page capture, width still determines the responsive layout and screenshot width. Height depends on the full-page algorithm:

- Default algorithm: the viewport height is temporarily stretched to match the page height, so the supplied height matters less.
by_sections: the supplied height sets section size and scroll increments. Smaller sections mean more scroll events and may trigger more lazy-loaded content, but can take longer.

Use a device preset when you need emulation
Set viewport_device to use a device preset instead of configuring every emulation property yourself. A preset configures viewport width, viewport height, device scale factor, mobile mode, touch support, and landscape orientation. This is device emulation, not a capture made on a physical device.

You can still set individual options explicitly, including width and height, to override preset values. The supported device list can change; retrieve the current list from GET https://api.screenshotone.com/devices?access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY rather than relying only on an example snapshot. Troubleshooting viewport requests
- The layout does not match the intended breakpoint: verify that
viewport_widthis set to the browser width you intend. A small width change can switch responsive navigation or columns. - The output file is the wrong size: distinguish browser dimensions from output resizing. Use viewport options to control rendering; use
image_widthandimage_heightto resize the result. - Full-page height seems ignored: with the default full-page algorithm, viewport height is stretched to the page height. With
by_sections, it controls section size and scrolling instead. - A device preset does not use the dimensions you expected: explicit individual values may override preset dimensions. Check the current device list and the options sent with the request.
- The request fails or targets the wrong URL: construct query parameters with an encoder rather than concatenating raw values, and confirm the endpoint, target URL, and private access key.
