You can set a lower personal UPI spending limit or customize payment alerts only if your app or bank provides those controls. There is no single setting shared by every payment app: the effective limit can depend on NPCI rules, your bank, the transaction category and the app. Check the settings and help for the app you use, then confirm the limits and alerts for the bank account linked to UPI.
What does a UPI transaction limit mean?
“UPI limit” can refer to different controls, and they are not interchangeable:

- Personal spending control: A lower cap you choose, if your particular app offers one. The sources here do not establish a universal menu path or show that every app has this feature.
- Bank or issuer limit: A per-transaction or daily cap that applies to your linked bank account. It may be lower than an NPCI category ceiling.
- NPCI transaction ceiling: The maximum permitted for a transaction category under NPCI rules. It does not guarantee that your bank or account will allow a payment up to that amount.
App limits can also be set by the app, user, issuer, other payment participants or applicable law, as PhonePe’s UPI terms explain. Google Pay likewise notes that limits can vary by bank account and payment method in its standard UPI transaction limits guidance.
What are the standard UPI transaction limits?
NPCI’s UPI Frequently Asked Questions lists these transaction-category ceilings. The FAQ was accessed in 2026 and does not show a visible publication date.

- PAYMENT OPTIONS: Stickers state Accepts all major credit cards including American Express, Mastercard, Visa, and Discover for customer convenience

| Transaction category | NPCI ceiling |
|---|---|
| Normal UPI transactions | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction |
| Specified categories: Capital Markets, Collections, Insurance and Foreign Inward Remittances | Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction |
| IPO and Retail Direct Scheme | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction |
These are ceilings for the named categories, not a promise that every bank, account or app will permit a payment at that value. Google Pay publishes bank-wise limits as well; check its issuing bank-wise limits page for the relevant bank and confirm the applicable cap with the bank. Published values can be specific to that service and should not be treated as universal limits.
How to check whether your app lets you set a lower cap
- Open the UPI app you actually use. Look in its settings or help area for payment limits, transaction controls or spending controls. This is a place to check, not a guaranteed menu path; labels and available features differ by app.
- Identify the bank account selected for UPI. If more than one account is linked, check which one is selected for the payment. Limits can differ by issuing bank.
- Check what the control covers. If the app offers a cap, confirm whether it is per payment or daily/periodic, whether it applies to one linked bank account or multiple accounts, and whether it is a personal cap or an issuer-imposed limit.
- Confirm the bank’s own limit. Use the bank’s official support or account channels to check its per-transaction and daily limits. An app’s displayed control cannot be assumed to override the bank or NPCI rules.
How to check UPI payment alerts
There is no standard alert-setting path established for all UPI apps. In your app, inspect notification preferences and your phone’s notification permissions. Then check the linked bank’s registered contact details and alert preferences: bank notifications may depend on the account’s registered mobile number and the bank’s settings.

- CLEAR PAYMENT NOTICE: Clearly informs customers of a 3% credit card surcharge while noting no fee for cash or debit payments, helping avoid confusion at checkout.
- COMPACT COUNTERTOP SIZE: Measures 5" wide x 4" tall, perfect for checkout counters, registers, reception desks, and point-of-sale areas.
- 3-PACK VALUE SET: Includes three (3) identical countertop signs, ideal for placing at multiple registers, checkout stations, or service counters.
Before relying on a particular alert, verify which channel it uses—such as an in-app push notification, SMS or a bank notification—and whether it covers every linked account. For exact current steps, use the official help instructions from your app provider and bank.

- Read the error shown in the app. It may point to a limit or another issue.
- Check which bank account was used. Confirm its applicable daily and per-transaction limits with the bank.
- Contact the bank about account-specific problems. Google Pay’s troubleshooting guidance for sending or receiving money recommends checking the bank limit and contacting the bank where needed.
Check the payment before authorizing it
Verify the recipient and amount before entering your UPI PIN. NPCI says, “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” It also advises, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” Never disclose your PIN to someone offering to help with a failed payment or account setting.
