How to Set Up Your Sonos Speakers Using the App

Step-by-step Sonos app setup for a new system or an added speaker, with network requirements and what to do when the app can't find the speaker.

Plug the speaker in, open the Sonos app on an iPhone, iPad or Android device, choose Speaker or component, sign in or create a Sonos account, tap Add when the speaker appears, and follow the prompts. If you already have a Sonos system, the route is Settings → Add Speaker or Component. Exact prompts vary a little by speaker model and app generation.

Before you start

  • You need a phone or tablet. Sonos states: “An iOS or Android device is required to set up a new Sonos system or add new products.” Desktop apps can’t do this.
  • Check your OS version. The current Sonos app lists iOS 18+, iPadOS 18+, Android 10+ and Fire OS 7+. Android x86 devices and Chromebooks aren’t supported, and neither are beta OS versions. These minimums change over time, so check Sonos Support if your device is older.
  • Older systems may need the S1 Controller app. Sonos maintains this separate app for older products. Its minimums are iOS 12+, iPadOS 13+, Android 8.0+ (not Chromebooks) and Fire OS 7+. Some products, such as Sonos Five, don’t work with S1. Check your product’s compatibility before switching apps.
  • Use a suitable network. Sonos calls for a Wi-Fi router, high-speed wired internet (cable, fiber or DSL), and the app and speakers on the same subnet. Every Sonos product can use 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g Wi-Fi with WPA1/WPA2 Personal or an open network. Newer products and software support more modes.
  • Place and power the speaker. Put it where you’ll use it and plug it in before opening the app.

Network setups that cause trouble

Sonos lists these as unsupported:

  • Satellite internet
  • Mobile hotspots and LTE routers
  • Guest or portal-login networks
  • 5 GHz-only routers
  • Ethernet-over-power adapters
  • WPA/WPA2 Enterprise
  • VPNs that block local network access

If you set up with a wired connection, at least one Sonos product must stay connected by Ethernet. On a mesh Wi-Fi network, that wired product must connect to the primary mesh node. If you need to extend Wi-Fi for wireless Sonos speakers, Sonos recommends a Wi-Fi mesh router.

Set up a new Sonos system

  1. Connect the speaker to power.
  2. Open the Sonos app on your iOS or Android device.
  3. Under Get started with setup, choose Speaker or component.
  4. Create a Sonos account or sign in.
  5. When the app detects the speaker, choose Add.
  6. Work through the on-screen steps and add any music services you want.

This is the flow Sonos documents for the Sonos One. Pages for SYMFONISK, Amp and other products use a similar account-and-add flow, but follow the prompts for your exact model.

Add a speaker to an existing system

  1. Power the new product and wait for its status light to flash green. That is Sonos’s ready-to-add signal. If it doesn’t flash green, Sonos directs you to its reset guidance. A product that was set up before and is now disconnected may need Sonos’s missing-products guidance instead.
  2. Open the Sonos app.
  3. Go to Settings and, in the system section, choose Add Speaker or Component.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts.

A system can hold up to 32 products. In the S1 Controller, the path is Settings → System → Add Product, and it applies only to products and systems that support S1.

If the app can’t find the speaker

The usual symptoms are the current app stuck on “Searching for nearby products…” or the S1 app showing “Product not found.” Sonos’s recommended order is:

  1. Check power and readiness. Make sure the speaker is plugged in and the status light flashes green. If it was configured on another system and isn’t in that state, reset it to factory settings and try again.
  2. Reboot the speaker. Once it powers back on, choose Try Again.
  3. Move closer. Temporarily put the speaker nearer the router and keep your phone within 10 feet of it. This is a troubleshooting step, not a range guarantee.
  4. Try another mobile device with the Sonos app.
  5. Use Ethernet if the speaker has a port. Connect it directly to the router and run setup again. If that works, you can remove the cable later using Sonos’s wireless/wired switching instructions.

Don’t factory reset by default. Reset only when the speaker isn’t in the ready state described above.

Wireless or wired?

Neither is universally better. Decide on four points:

  • Does the speaker have an Ethernet port?
  • Does your Wi-Fi reach the speaker’s spot reliably?
  • Can the wired speaker stay connected to the router?
  • On a mesh network, can it connect to the primary node?

Next step: stereo pairing

Pairing is separate from setup. Only speakers of the same model can be stereo paired, though microphone-equipped speakers can also pair with the SL version of their model. Sonos recommends placing them 8–10 feet apart, with your main listening position 8–12 feet from the speakers.
