Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore deploying an application, establish a dependable baseline: confirm how your provider configured the server, patch the operating system, create and verify a non-root administrative login, secure SSH, and restrict inbound network access. Then arrange monitoring and tested backups. The exact commands and defaults depend on the Linux image and provider, so treat this as a sequence of checks—not a one-size-fits-all hardening script.
What to confirm before changing the server
A VPS is a server you administer. That means configuration, security, maintenance, and backup verification are your responsibility. OVHcloud’s VPS getting-started guidance describes the administrator’s role and the need to manage the server after delivery.

Start in the provider control panel and record the delivered operating system and version, assigned IP addresses, initial username, login method, and available console or rescue access. Defaults differ: OVHcloud notes that some Linux images begin with an OS-linked non-root account; DigitalOcean documents creating a sudo-capable non-root user during setup. Do not assume root SSH is enabled or that another provider uses the same account model. DigitalOcean describes a Droplet as “a new server you can use, either standalone or as part of a larger, cloud-based infrastructure” in its server setup and security documentation.

Patch the operating system first
Use the package manager and update procedure for the installed distribution; there is no single safe update command for every Linux image. Check the provider’s image documentation if the initial account or package repositories are customized. If an update installs a kernel or otherwise requires a restart, schedule and perform the reboot, then reconnect and confirm the system returns normally.
RamNode’s setup walkthrough is specifically for Ubuntu 24.04, so its instructions should not be treated as universal commands for other distributions or versions. See its Ubuntu 24.04 initial-server setup guide.
Create and verify a day-to-day administrator
Use a regular account with sudo privileges for routine administration where the distribution supports that model. If the provider has already created a suitable non-root account, verify its privileges rather than creating an unnecessary duplicate. Otherwise, follow the distribution’s official account-management procedure to create one and grant only the administrative access required.

- Keep the existing provider-provided session open while configuring the account.
- Open a separate SSH session as the new administrator, using the server’s assigned address and the provider’s documented login method.
- Test a harmless privileged command with sudo and confirm it succeeds.
- Only after the new session and privilege check work should you consider ending the original session or changing the original account’s access.
This second-session check is a simple safeguard against locking yourself out. DigitalOcean’s Droplet security instructions and RamNode’s Ubuntu-specific procedure describe non-root administrative access and SSH setup.
Secure SSH without losing access
Set up SSH public-key authentication and prove that the key works in a fresh session before disabling password authentication or root login. The right settings depend on how the provider initialized the image; check its instructions and the distribution’s SSH configuration before editing files or restarting services.
- Install the public key for the account you intend to administer with.
- Start a new connection using that account and key; do not rely on the session that was already open.
- Confirm sudo access from the new connection.
- Only then apply any intended restrictions on password or root login, checking how the provider expects those settings to be managed.
If you change SSH’s listening port, first update both the operating-system firewall and any provider-level firewall to allow the new port. Otherwise, the server may reject the connection even though the SSH service is running. OVHcloud also warns that Ubuntu 24.04 and later may manage the SSH port through ssh.socket, unlike older configurations; changing a familiar SSH configuration file alone may therefore not change the active listening port. Consult its SSH port guidance for the relevant Ubuntu setup.
Restrict inbound network access
Begin with inbound traffic blocked except for the administration path you have verified. Then allow only the ports required by services you deliberately intend to expose. DigitalOcean’s example cloud firewall allows SSH inbound as an initial access rule; it is a provider-specific example, not a universal firewall command or policy.
- Allow the SSH port and protocol you actually configured before enabling or tightening firewall rules.
- Open application ports only when the corresponding service is installed and meant to be reachable from that network.
- Check both the server’s host firewall and the provider’s network firewall; a rule in one layer does not necessarily create a rule in the other.
- After changing rules, test a new SSH connection and confirm the intended service is reachable from the appropriate network.
DigitalOcean documents its setup and cloud-firewall example in its Droplet security guide. OVHcloud’s VPS security guidance covers securing a VPS and highlights the need to keep access settings consistent.
Set a useful hostname and consistent time
Choose a hostname that identifies the server clearly in logs, monitoring, and administrative tools. Set the time zone to match your operational needs and verify that time synchronization is active. UTC is RamNode’s recommendation for its Ubuntu 24.04 VPS guide; other teams may choose a different display time zone, but consistent synchronization is important for interpreting logs and correlating events.

Plan monitoring and recovery before adding valuable data
Enable provider monitoring where available, and note a baseline for CPU, memory, and disk usage so later changes are easier to spot. Decide what needs to be backed up, how often, how long copies should be retained, and where recovery instructions will live.
Provider backups can help, but understand what they contain and how restoration works. DigitalOcean describes its Droplet backups as system-level disk images in its setup documentation. That does not remove the need to decide how application data should be protected for your workload. OVHcloud makes backup testing part of the VPS administrator’s responsibility in its getting-started documentation.
- Enable a provider backup option if it fits your recovery needs.
- Identify application data and configuration that need their own backup plan.
- Record retention expectations and the steps needed to restore.
- Perform a test restoration and verify that the recovered files or service are usable.
Add only the services your workload needs
A public website may need DNS, a web server or reverse proxy, and TLS certificates. A private service, development environment, or other workload may not need those components at all. Install services only when the application requires them, and expose only the network access they need.

RamNode’s Ubuntu walkthrough includes LEMP/LAMP and SSL as possible application setup tasks, not prerequisites for every VPS. Likewise, swap configuration, containers, and other workload-specific choices should follow the application’s actual requirements rather than being added as ritual steps.
Use a provider checklist when selecting or reviewing a VPS
Provider defaults and control-panel features vary. Check these points against the workload and the people who will operate it:
- Supported operating systems and versions.
- Initial account, SSH, console, and rescue-access procedures.
- Host-level and provider-level firewall controls.
- Backup frequency, retention, and restoration method.
- Monitoring, private networking, and IPv6 availability.
- Region and network latency relative to intended users.
- Current total cost and the support options available.
The cited setup documentation establishes differences in account setup, firewall examples, and backup features, but it does not provide a like-for-like provider pricing comparison. Check current provider terms directly when comparing costs.

Baseline completion check
- You know the installed OS and version, initial account, addresses, and recovery access.
- The system is updated, and any required reboot has been completed and checked.
- A non-root administrative account can connect in a separate SSH session and use sudo.
- Public-key login works before any password or root-access restriction is applied.
- Firewall rules match the actual SSH port and expose only services the workload needs.
- Hostname and time synchronization are configured.
- Monitoring, backup retention, and restoration steps are defined, with a test restore completed.
This is a baseline, not a guarantee that a server is production-ready. Production controls depend on the application, threat model, availability objectives, and recovery expectations.
