The controller stores up to three custom profiles alongside its default profile; press its Profile button to switch among saved setups. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 as supported platforms for these configuration features.
What you need before setting up a profile
- An Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and access to the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11. Microsoft documents button mapping and profile configuration through the app on these platforms: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
- Connect or select the controller in the app before changing its settings. Available controls and labels can vary with the app and firmware version, so use the options shown for your connected controller.
Create or edit a controller profile
In Xbox Accessories, select the Elite Series 2, then create a profile or edit an existing one. Configure its button assignments and stick settings, and save the profile when finished. Microsoft says the Series 2 can store up to three custom profiles plus one default profile onboard; the controller’s Profile button lets you switch between them. See Xbox Design Lab’s Series 2 specifications.

Remap face buttons and paddles
Use the app’s mapping controls to assign supported inputs to face buttons and paddles. The mapping is part of the selected profile, so you can keep different assignments for different games instead of reconfiguring the controller each time.

A November 2024 update added the ability to map thumbstick directions to buttons or keyboard inputs. These features may depend on the current app and controller firmware; check the options available on your device. Neither update guarantees that every game accepts every mapped input. Adjust thumbstick sensitivity
In the profile settings, adjust each thumbstick’s sensitivity curve. The app also supports swapping left- and right-stick inputs. A curve changes the software response to stick movement; it is separate from the controller’s adjustable physical stick tension. Microsoft lists both sensitivity curves and adjustable-tension thumbsticks as Series 2 features: Series 2 product details.
There is no universal best curve: the effect depends on the game and the setting presented in your current app version. Change one setting at a time, save the profile, and try it in the game you intend to play. If the response feels wrong, return to the profile and adjust that setting rather than changing several controls at once.

Switch between saved setups
After saving profiles, press the controller’s Profile button to cycle through the onboard profiles. The Series 2 supports up to three custom profiles in addition to its default profile. Give each custom profile a clear purpose—for example, different button assignments or stick response for different games—so you can choose the appropriate setup on the controller.

Software setup versus physical changes
Profiles change what the controller sends; replacing parts changes the hardware. Microsoft lists interchangeable thumbsticks, a thumbstick adjustment tool, a D-pad, and paddles among the standard Series 2 package components. Replacement thumbsticks, paddles, or D-pads are a separate option, not a requirement for remapping controls. Confirm compatibility with your exact controller model before buying parts.

Xbox Wire notes that recalibration does not fix every stick problem, including drift caused by normal wear. If a stick remains unreliable after software adjustments, changing its profile may not address the underlying physical issue. See Xbox Wire’s November 2024 update.
