For WooCommerce order and customer transaction emails, start with WooCommerce’s built-in transactional-emails log, available in WooCommerce 10.9 and later. Find it in WooCommerce > Status > Logs. For password resets and other WordPress or plugin messages, use your mail provider’s activity records or a general WordPress email logging plugin: WooCommerce’s log does not capture every site email.
A log shows whether a message was attempted and handed off or failed; a “Sent” status does not confirm inbox delivery. Use provider-side records and recipient checks to investigate delivery.

Choose the log that matches the email
WooCommerce’s native transactional log is intended for WooCommerce transactional messages, such as order notifications and customer emails. WordPress password resets, administrative messages, and messages sent by other plugins may not appear there. For those, check the sending provider’s activity records or configure a general WordPress mail logging plugin.

The native logger uses WooCommerce’s standard logging settings, including configured storage, retention, and level thresholds. WooCommerce documents file and database handlers; file logs are normally stored under uploads/wc-logs. WooCommerce logging guidance
Understand the status before changing settings
- Sent: WooCommerce handed the email to the mail system successfully. This does not prove that the recipient’s mail server accepted it or that it reached the inbox. WooCommerce troubleshooting documentation · WP Mail SMTP email log documentation
- Failed: The send process returned an error. Read the recorded reason and investigate the mailer, connection, or host configuration.
- Disabled: That email type is turned off in WooCommerce > Settings > Emails.
- Skipped: WooCommerce did not attempt to send because a prerequisite was missing, such as a recipient.
WooCommerce also adds private order notes for order-related sent and failed attempts. Disabled and skipped outcomes appear in the log but are not added as order notes. WooCommerce troubleshooting documentation
Add logging for other WordPress emails
WP Mail SMTP email log
WP Mail SMTP documents an email-log setup for keeping basic information about sent email. In the plugin, open WP Mail SMTP > Settings > Email Log, enable the option to keep a log of basic details, and select Save. View entries at WP Mail SMTP > Email Log. Its documented fields include status, timestamp, subject, recipients, sender, attachment count, mailer, technical details, and source. Its documented default retention is “Forever,” and deleted logs cannot be recovered. Store message contents or attachments only if they are needed for your operations, and set retention accordingly. Optional combined SMTP and logging extension
If you want a WooCommerce extension that combines mailer connections with centralized email records, its documented setup path is WooCommerce > Settings > SMTP > Connections. Add a connection with your provider credentials and sender details, send a test email, and save it. The records are at WooCommerce > Settings > SMTP > Email Logs. The extension documents connection, role, attempt, timestamp, and error details, along with search, filtering, export, resend, and primary and fallback connections. It is optional; it is not needed to use WooCommerce’s native transactional log. SMTP & Email Logs for WooCommerce documentation
The extension lists providers including Brevo, Gmail/Google Workspace, Microsoft 365/Outlook, Mailgun, SendGrid, Postmark, and Maileroo. Choose the connection and authentication method supported by your provider and account; credentials and availability are provider-specific. SMTP & Email Logs for WooCommerce documentation

- Trigger the exact message. Use a test order for a WooCommerce message or the action that generates the missing WordPress email.
- Check the appropriate record. Look in
transactional-emailsfor WooCommerce transactional mail. For other WordPress messages, inspect provider activity or the general mail log. - If it failed, follow the error. Use the recorded reason to investigate the mailer connection, host, or authentication configuration.
- If it was sent, check beyond WordPress. Inspect your provider’s activity records and ask the recipient to check spam, filtering, and the correct address. A WordPress “Sent” status records handoff, not inbox receipt.
- If it was disabled or skipped, correct the cause. Check the email toggle under WooCommerce > Settings > Emails or supply the missing prerequisite, such as a recipient.
WooCommerce recommends using a From address on your site’s domain rather than a public address such as @gmail.com or @yahoo.com. Ask your host or mail provider about SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for that domain; a test order is one way to check the setup. WooCommerce email troubleshooting · WooCommerce email settings documentation
WooCommerce’s email settings documentation places the From name and address beneath the notification table. If replies should go somewhere else, it also documents enabling a separate Reply-to address. WooCommerce email settings documentation
Protect log contents and stored files
WooCommerce’s transactional log redacts raw customer email addresses: recipients appear as the matching WordPress username or guest, and addresses in failure messages are redacted. WooCommerce troubleshooting documentation
WooCommerce warns that files in uploads/wc-logs might be publicly accessible if the web server does not honor the supplied .htaccess protection. Review server access controls, especially before relying on file logs to hold sensitive information. WooCommerce logging guidance
Quick Recap
- Limit access to logs to the people who need them.
- Decide whether you need email bodies or attachments before enabling their storage.
- Choose a retention period that meets operational needs without keeping records indefinitely by default.
- Confirm that log files cannot be fetched publicly from your site.
