To set up a WooCommerce subscription, activate the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension, create a product under Products > Add New, choose Simple subscription or Variable subscription, then define the recurring price, billing interval, trial, sign-up fee, expiration, renewal date, and payment behavior. Finish the ordinary product, tax, inventory, and shipping fields, publish the product, and test the complete checkout and renewal path on a staging site.

The most important decision is how renewals will be collected. A compatible payment gateway can charge saved payment methods automatically; otherwise, customers pay each renewal from an emailed payment link or their My Account area.

Install and activate WooCommerce and the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension on the same store. Confirm that your WordPress user can edit products and that the store’s currency, tax rules, shipping zones, and payment gateways are already configured. Subscription settings cannot compensate for an incomplete checkout configuration.
- WooCommerce: provides the store, products, orders, customers, taxes, and shipping.
- WooCommerce Subscriptions: adds recurring schedules, subscription statuses, renewals, trials, sign-up fees, and expiration rules. It supports subscription plans on simple, variable, bundle, and composite products.
- Payment gateway: must document support for the recurring payment method you intend to use. Automatic renewals generally require the gateway to save and reuse the customer’s payment method.
- Staging site: gives you a safe place to run a complete test before customers encounter the product.
Decide whether the offer is one fixed plan or several variations. A single price and schedule normally use a simple subscription. Different sizes, editions, prices, or schedules use a variable subscription, with subscription settings defined for each variation as applicable.

Create the subscription product
- In the WordPress dashboard, open
Products > Add New. - Enter the product name, description, images, and other normal catalog information.
- In the Product data panel, select Simple subscription for one recurring offer. Select Variable subscription when customers must choose among variations or tiers.
- Enter a recurring price. Leaving the price empty makes the product unavailable for purchase. Enter
0when the subscription itself is free. - Set the payment schedule and any product-level subscription options described in the following sections.
- Complete inventory, tax, shipping, downloadable, virtual, and other product fields required by this particular offer.
- Review the product page and checkout on the staging site, then select Publish only after the customer path works as intended.
Choose the billing interval and recurring price
The recurring price is the amount charged for each scheduled payment, in the store’s configured currency. WooCommerce supports daily, weekly, monthly, and annual periods. The interval can be set from 1 through 6.

Use the shortest interval that matches what you deliver and support. A digital service that changes every month may fit a monthly plan; a physical replenishment may need a longer interval to avoid unnecessary shipments. Do not describe a schedule as “quarterly” unless the configured interval is three months.

Use a storewide plan or a custom plan
If your store has reusable or storewide subscription plans, you can apply one of those plans to maintain consistent terms across products. A custom plan lets this product carry its own settings. A custom plan can define:
- Billing frequency and interval
- Free-trial length
- One-time sign-up fee
- Expiration and total payment count
- Subscription discount
- Renewal-date alignment
Use a storewide plan when several products genuinely share the same commercial terms. Use a custom plan when one product has a different trial, billing day, fee, discount, or end date. Keeping those decisions at the appropriate level reduces accidental differences between products that customers expect to work alike.
Configure trials and sign-up fees
Free trials
Enable a free trial when the customer should receive access before the first subscription charge. Set the trial length in the product’s subscription settings. Billing begins after the trial according to the configured schedule, not at the moment the trial starts.
Pay attention to whether checkout collected a payment method. A zero-dollar initial checkout without a payment method can leave the subscription On Hold when the trial ends, because WooCommerce is waiting for the first renewal payment. Test this exact path with the gateway you plan to use; a trial that looks successful on the product page can still require customer action later.

Sign-up fees
A sign-up fee is charged once at the initial signup. It is separate from the recurring price and is not repeated on ordinary renewals. Show the fee clearly in the product and checkout copy so customers can distinguish the first payment from later charges.
You can combine a trial and a sign-up fee, but verify the resulting order totals and the date of the first recurring charge. The trial delays recurring billing; it does not automatically remove a fee that is configured for the initial signup.
Set expiration and calculate the number of payments
By default, subscriptions renew indefinitely until the subscriber or store manager cancels them. To make a plan end automatically, enable expiration and enter the total number of payments.
The payment count includes the initial signup payment. For example, a plan set to 12 monthly total payments consists of one payment at signup followed by 11 monthly renewals. The subscription expires after those 12 payments; it does not run for 12 renewals plus the signup payment.

Choose an indefinite schedule for continuing access or service. Choose a fixed count for a defined course, installment commitment, or time-limited program. State the term in customer-facing copy using the same counting convention as the product setting.
Align renewal dates when a calendar day matters
Use the renewal-date alignment option when renewals should occur on a specified day rather than simply following the date of each customer’s signup. This is useful for a service that bills all customers on a common day or for a delivery operation organized around a fixed calendar.

Before enabling alignment, decide how the date should be explained at checkout and in account emails. Test a signup made before the target date and one made after it, then inspect the resulting renewal order. The configured billing interval still controls how often charges recur; alignment controls the date used for those renewals.
Configure gifting, one-time purchases, shipping, and limits
Gifting
Enable gifting when one person should be able to purchase a subscription for another recipient. Test the purchaser and recipient communications, account ownership, and cancellation experience before launch. If the offer is intended only for the purchaser, leave gifting disabled to avoid an unintended transfer workflow.
One-time purchase alongside the subscription
You can allow customers to buy the product once instead of subscribing. This presents a one-time option alongside the recurring offer and is useful when customers need to try the item without an ongoing commitment. Make the one-time price and subscription price visually distinct so the renewal obligation is clear.
One-time shipping
Enable one-time shipping when delivery should be charged once rather than on every renewal. This setting is especially important for a subscription whose later renewals are digital, service-based, or otherwise do not require a new shipment. Verify the cart, initial order, and renewal order separately because shipping behavior can differ between them.
Subscription limits
Where appropriate, set a subscription limit under Advanced. A limit can prevent a customer from holding more subscriptions than your service or inventory can support. Define the intended limit in your customer terms and test what happens when the limit is reached.
Finish ordinary product settings
Subscription-specific fields do not replace standard WooCommerce product configuration. Complete the following before publishing:

- Inventory: decide whether stock is managed and how a renewal should behave when stock is unavailable.
- Taxes: confirm tax classes and displayed prices for the regions you serve.
- Shipping: assign the correct shipping class and zones, then verify whether shipping is recurring or one-time.
- Virtual or downloadable status: mark the product correctly so checkout does not request physical delivery for a digital service.
- Variations: for a variable subscription, give every purchasable variation its own price and applicable subscription terms.
- Customer instructions: explain what is delivered, when the first charge occurs, how renewals work, and how the customer can cancel or suspend.
Choose automatic or manual renewal payments
Automatic renewals
Automatic renewal requires a payment gateway that supports the required recurring method and is configured to save or reuse the customer’s payment method. The exact supported methods and gateway settings vary, so consult the gateway’s own documentation for the method you intend to offer.
During staging, confirm that the initial checkout stores the payment token or other reusable payment credential as the gateway requires. Then test a renewal order and inspect its status, amount, and gateway transaction record. A gateway that accepts the first payment is not necessarily capable of charging later renewals automatically.
Manual renewal payments
When automatic charging is unavailable or the customer chooses manual renewal, WooCommerce can send a payment link by email. The customer can also pay from the My Account area. Make sure renewal notices contain a working link and that the customer can sign in or recover access to the account.
For a manually created subscription, paying the pending parent order changes the subscription status to Active. WooCommerce then creates a renewal order when the next payment is due according to the configured billing schedule. The parent order must be paid before the subscription can proceed on that schedule.
Compare plans before publishing
If your store offers two or more subscription choices, compare the terms in one internal specification and in the customer-facing product copy.

Test the complete customer journey on staging
Do not test only the product page. Run the same sequence a real customer will use:
- Open the product page as a logged-out visitor and confirm the subscription price, trial, fee, shipping, and renewal language.
- Add the product to the cart and verify that recurring and one-time totals are separated correctly.
- Complete checkout with the intended payment method. Check account creation, order totals, taxes, shipping, and any sign-up fee.
- Open
My Account > Subscriptionsand confirm the status, next payment date, amount, and available customer actions. - For automatic renewals, verify that the gateway can reuse the saved payment method and that a renewal order is generated on schedule.
- For manual renewals, open the emailed payment link and the account-area link, pay the pending order, and confirm that the subscription becomes Active.
- Exercise cancellation and suspension from the customer account, then confirm the resulting status and access behavior.
- Simulate or safely test a failed payment and check the notices, status change, retry behavior, and staff visibility.
- For a fixed-term plan, confirm that the subscription expires after the configured total count, including the initial signup payment.
- If the store combines subscription and one-time products in one cart, verify that the gateway supports that mixed checkout and that shipping and renewal orders are calculated correctly.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The product cannot be purchased
Return to the product’s subscription price. An empty price means the product is not purchasable. Enter the intended recurring amount, or enter 0 for a genuinely free subscription, then retest the product page and cart.
The first charge occurs at the wrong time
Review the free-trial length, billing interval, and any renewal-date alignment. A trial postpones recurring billing; a sign-up fee remains an initial charge when configured. Check the order timeline rather than relying only on the product-page wording.

Inspect whether the zero-dollar checkout collected a payment method. If no method was stored, the subscription can be placed On Hold when the trial ends while WooCommerce waits for the first renewal payment. Provide a working payment-link path or require a supported payment method at checkout, according to the gateway’s documented behavior.
Renewals are not charging automatically
Confirm that the selected gateway supports automatic renewals for the specific payment method, that saving or reusing payment methods is enabled, and that the customer’s payment credential was stored. If those conditions are not met, use manual renewal links instead of promising automatic billing.
The subscription expires earlier than expected
Recalculate the configured total. The initial signup is payment number one. A total of 12 therefore produces 11 renewals, not 12 renewals after signup.
Shipping appears on the wrong orders
Review the one-time-shipping setting, product shipping status, shipping zones, and mixed-cart behavior. Compare the initial order with a renewal order; they may intentionally have different shipping requirements.

A variable subscription has inconsistent terms
Inspect each variation individually. A variable product can expose different prices or subscription options, so one variation may have a different trial, fee, interval, or expiration from another unless you standardize them deliberately.
Operate the subscription after launch
Keep the customer-facing terms synchronized with the actual product settings. When changing a price, interval, trial, expiration, or renewal-date rule, test the effect on existing subscriptions as well as new signups in a staging copy before applying the change to production.
Monitor renewal orders, failed payments, subscriptions approaching expiration, and customer requests from the My Account area. Document which gateway handles automatic renewals and which products require manual payment links. This gives support staff a clear answer when a customer asks why a renewal was charged, delayed, or awaiting payment.
