The client can be Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android. Connections may work across a local network or the internet, but access from outside your network depends on your network, router, firewall, VPN, and organizational policy. Keep Windows Firewall enabled throughout setup, and test locally before treating an internet connection as a separate troubleshooting problem.

Understand the host and client roles
Remote Desktop uses two devices with different jobs. Keeping those roles straight prevents the most common setup mistake—checking the edition or changing settings on the wrong computer.

Microsoft’s current instructions are in How to use Remote Desktop. App names and availability can change, so check that page if your device shows a different label or store listing.
What you need before starting
Have the physical host PC identified and powered on for the period in which you intend to connect. You also need an account that is authorized to sign in to that computer. The client must be able to reach the host over the relevant network path, and you should know whether you are testing on the same local network or from an outside network.
The important edition rule applies to the host, not the client. A client running a different Windows edition—or a different operating system altogether—can connect when the destination is a supported Windows Pro PC. Installing a client app cannot make an unsupported host edition accept Remote Desktop.
Microsoft’s guidance does not require buying a particular computer, router, VPN appliance, or subscription service for this basic setup. Those items are environment-specific. If you are connecting to an organization’s systems, the organization may impose additional rules or require its own approved network method.
Check the remote PC’s Windows edition
Before changing settings, verify the edition on the computer that will be accessed:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications.
- Read the value next to Edition.
- Proceed only if the host is running Windows Pro, as required by Microsoft’s Remote Desktop support guidance.
Do not check only the laptop, phone, or tablet you plan to carry with you. The qualifying edition is the one installed on the host. If you are looking at a client’s About page, you have not yet verified the requirement.
The connecting device does not need to use the same Windows edition, and it can use a different operating system. This means a Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android device, or another Windows PC can serve as the client while the host remains the Windows Pro computer.
If the host is still running Windows 10, note its support status before relying on it for regular remote access. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Under the policy described in its Remote Desktop guidance, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check Microsoft’s current documentation and your organization’s policy when deciding how to proceed.
Enable Remote Desktop on the host
After confirming the edition, turn on the feature on the PC you want to control:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Switch Remote Desktop on.
- Confirm the change when Windows asks.
- Write down the value shown under PC name. Enter this name exactly on the client.
The PC name is the destination identifier used by the client app. It is not the name of the phone, tablet, or laptop you are using to connect. Keep the spelling, punctuation, and capitalization as displayed. A copied name is less error-prone than retyping it.

If the computer is later renamed, the old saved entry on a client may no longer identify the host. Record the new value and update each client entry. When documenting a household or office setup, label the name with the physical computer it belongs to so that similarly named machines are not confused.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemote Desktop is now enabled on the host, but that does not by itself guarantee that every network can reach it. The next step is to test from a client on an appropriate network.
Connect from your device
Choose the workflow for the device you are holding. In each case, the name you enter is the host’s displayed PC name, not the name of the client. The final sign-in uses an account authorized for the host.
| Client device | Microsoft app | Connection path |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Remote Desktop Connection | Search for and open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the host PC name, select Connect, and sign in. |
| macOS or iOS | Windows App | Install or open Windows App from the Microsoft Store or Apple App Store, add the host PC name, select the PC, and sign in. |
| Android | Remote Desktop | Install or open the Remote Desktop app from Google Play, add the host PC name, select the PC, and sign in. |
Windows client
- Open the Start menu and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
- Launch the application.
- Enter the host’s PC name in the computer field.
- Select Connect.
- Provide the account credentials used for access to the host.
For a first test, place the Windows client and host on the same local network. This gives you a clear baseline: if the name is wrong or the host is not reachable locally, changing routers or attempting an internet connection will not resolve the underlying issue.
macOS or iPhone/iPad client
- Open the Windows App. Microsoft lists distribution through the Microsoft Store and Apple App Store.
- Choose the option to add a PC.
- Enter the host PC name exactly as shown on the host.
- Select the saved PC entry to start the connection.
- Sign in when prompted.
The app name may differ from older Microsoft remote-desktop instructions. Follow the store listing and Microsoft’s current support page for the platform you are using rather than assuming that an older app name is still current.

Android client
- Open the Remote Desktop app, available through Google Play according to Microsoft’s support instructions.
- Add a new PC.
- Enter the host PC name.
- Select the PC entry.
- Sign in with the account authorized for the host.
As with the other clients, saving the destination after entering the exact PC name avoids repeatedly retyping it. If you have more than one host, use each computer’s displayed name and verify the physical destination before connecting.
Choose the right network approach
Remote Desktop can connect over a network or over the internet, but those are different network situations. Treat them as separate tests instead of changing several variables at once.
Both devices are on the same network
Start with the host and client connected to the same local network. Use the PC name shown in the host’s Remote Desktop settings. If the client cannot locate it, confirm that you copied the name exactly and that you are connecting to the intended computer rather than another device with a similar label.
A successful local connection confirms that the host edition, Remote Desktop switch, credentials, and at least one network path are working together. It does not prove that the host is reachable from a different location. Conversely, a failure on the local network should be solved locally before you investigate internet routing.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are connecting from outside the network
Internet access is conditional. Whether it works depends on the home or office network, router configuration, firewall policy, and how the remote PC is made reachable. Microsoft’s general work-from-home guidance does not prescribe one universal router or port-forwarding setup, so do not apply an internet recipe without checking the requirements and policy for your specific network.

For an organization’s network, Microsoft describes a VPN as a more secure way to connect to that network, particularly when using public Wi-Fi. Read the organization’s instructions or ask its administrator before attempting remote access. A VPN may be required by policy, and the organization may restrict which users can enable Remote Desktop or change firewall settings.
Do not assume that a PC name that works on the local network will automatically resolve from the public internet. Name resolution, router behavior, firewall rules, VPN access, and organizational controls can all differ outside the local network. If the approved method is a VPN, establish that connection first and then follow the organization’s Remote Desktop procedure.
Keep Windows Firewall enabled
Windows Firewall filters network traffic and helps block unauthorized access. Microsoft documents separate domain, private, and public network profiles; public networks generally call for stricter security controls. Leave the firewall turned on while configuring and using Remote Desktop.
If Windows reports that an app is being blocked, Microsoft recommends allowing the necessary app through the firewall instead of disabling the firewall entirely. The documented Windows Security path is Windows Security > Firewall & network protection, where the available controls depend on your account and organization policy. If a work or school administrator manages the setting, you may not be allowed to change it yourself; contact that administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
Changing a network profile or adding an exception affects security as well as connectivity. Public networks generally warrant stricter controls than private or domain networks. Make only the change approved for your situation, and avoid the shortcut of turning off all firewall protection just to test a connection.
Microsoft’s firewall guidance is available at Firewall and network protection in the Windows Security app.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The Remote Desktop setting is missing or cannot be enabled
Return to Start > Settings > System > About and inspect Windows specifications > Edition on the host. The supported host requirement applies to the PC being accessed, not merely to the client. If the edition does not meet that requirement, changing the client app will not solve the problem.
Also confirm that you are signed in to the computer whose settings you intend to change. A client device’s edition does not control whether the host can accept Remote Desktop.
The client cannot find the PC
- On the host, reopen Settings > System > Remote Desktop and copy the current value under PC name.
- Replace the saved destination on the client with that exact value.
- Check whether the client and host are on the same network when testing locally.
- Confirm that you selected the intended physical PC if several devices have similar names.
- If the connection is from outside the network, treat it as a network-reachability or policy issue rather than assuming the app is broken.
A renamed host can leave an outdated destination saved in a client app. Recheck the displayed name instead of relying on an old note or shortcut.
A firewall warning appears
Do not turn off Windows Firewall to make a connection attempt. Follow Microsoft’s advice to allow the required app through the firewall, and use the appropriate network profile controls. On a managed computer, ask the administrator for the approved exception.

If you cannot edit the firewall controls, that restriction may be intentional. Organization policy can prevent users from changing firewall settings, so an administrator must approve or perform the required change.
Remote access works locally but not from the internet
A successful local test proves only that the local network path and host configuration work. External access can be limited by the router, firewall, VPN requirements, or organizational rules. Consult the network owner or administrator for the approved method; Microsoft’s work-from-home guidance discusses VPN use for organization networks but does not provide a universal home-router configuration.
Document which test succeeded and where the failure occurs. “Works on the same network” and “works over the internet” are separate outcomes, so avoid undoing a working local configuration while investigating an external path.
The sign-in is rejected
Recheck that you are using the account authorized for the host and that you are entering credentials in the client associated with that destination. If the computer belongs to a school or employer, the organization may control which accounts can connect. Ask the administrator for the approved account and sign-in method rather than attempting to weaken security settings.
You are using Windows 10
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Under the support policy described in its Remote Desktop guidance, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. If the host or client still runs Windows 10, account for that support status and review Microsoft’s current documentation before relying on it for remote access.

Compare the client options
The documented client choices are alternatives based on the device already in your hands, not competing paid products.
- Windows: use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection application and enter the host PC name.
- macOS and iOS: use Windows App, add the PC, select it, and sign in.
- Android: use the Remote Desktop app, add the PC, select it, and sign in.
All three workflows depend on the same host conditions: Windows Pro, Remote Desktop enabled, an exact PC name, an authorized account, and a network path. Switching platforms changes the client application, not the host requirement.
Use a practical setup checklist
- Host identified: you know which physical PC will be accessed and it is available for the intended session.
- Edition checked: the host’s value under Windows specifications > Edition meets the documented Windows Pro requirement.
- Remote Desktop enabled: the switch is on under Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- PC name recorded: the exact displayed name is available when configuring the client.
- Client selected: Windows uses Remote Desktop Connection; macOS and iOS use Windows App; Android uses Remote Desktop.
- Credentials ready: you can sign in with the account authorized for the host.
- Local test planned: when possible, test with both devices on the same network first.
- Firewall protected: Windows Firewall remains enabled, with an app exception used instead of disabling protection if one is needed.
- Network path understood: local connections are tested locally, while internet connections follow the applicable router, VPN, and organization policy.
- Support status checked: Windows 10 hosts or clients are evaluated in light of Microsoft’s October 14, 2025 support end date.
What Microsoft’s documentation does—and does not—promise
The official instructions establish the host-edition requirement, the Windows settings path, the PC-name workflow, and the supported client app paths. They also warn against weakening firewall protection and describe VPN use for safer access to an organization’s network.
They do not establish one configuration that will make every home router accept an incoming internet connection, nor do they recommend a particular router, VPN appliance, computer, or paid service. Treat those components as environment-specific prerequisites rather than guaranteed parts of the Windows setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Windows edition needs to be Pro?
The PC being accessed—the host or remote PC—must run Windows Pro according to Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guidance. The connecting client can use another Windows edition or macOS, iOS, or Android.
Where do I find the host PC name?
On the host, open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop. Record the value shown under PC name and enter that value in the client app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I connect from a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
Yes. Microsoft documents Windows App for macOS and iOS, and the Remote Desktop app for Android. Add the host PC name, select the saved PC, and sign in.
Do both devices have to be on the same Wi-Fi network?
No. Remote Desktop may work over a local network or the internet, but outside-network access depends on router configuration, firewall policy, VPN requirements, and organizational rules. Test locally first when possible.
Should I disable Windows Firewall if Remote Desktop cannot connect?
No. Microsoft warns that turning off the firewall can make the PC more vulnerable. Keep it enabled and, if necessary, allow the required app through the firewall. A work or school administrator may need to approve the change.
Why does the PC name work locally but not remotely?
A local success confirms only the local path and host configuration. Internet access can require an approved router setup or VPN and can be restricted by firewall or organization policy. Microsoft does not provide one universal home-router recipe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What app should I use on Windows?
Search for and open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the host’s PC name, select Connect, and sign in with an authorized account.
What happened to Windows 10 support?
Microsoft states that support ended on October 14, 2025. Under the policy described in its Remote Desktop guidance, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
Do I need to buy a special router or remote-access service?
The documented setup does not recommend a particular router, VPN appliance, computer, or paid service. Internet connectivity is environment-specific, and an organization may require its own VPN or network method.
The Bottom Line
To set up Windows Remote Desktop, verify that the host PC runs Windows Pro, enable Remote Desktop at Settings > System > Remote Desktop, record its PC name, and connect with Remote Desktop Connection or Microsoft’s documented app for your client device.
